Filter by:Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) induces many metabolic troubles especially for the advanced CKD (stage 3b-5) patients and their prevalence and importance grow with the deterioration of the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Among them, muscle wasting is common and multifactorial, partially explained by an imbalance between protein catabolism and synthesis. Muscular strength is also affected beyond the reduction of the lean body mass, resulting in profound fatigue. The present study seeks to quantify the prevalence of low muscular strength production (dynapenia) in a cohort of elderly patients with advanced CKD, through a maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) handgrip test compared to control data available in the literature, matched in term of age and sex. It also aims to investigate the link between the reported fatigue (subjective) and the evolution of the MVC, called critical force (fcrit) during a fatiguing task (objective fatigability).
The investigators conduct a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to investigate the effects of Fermented Prunus Mume Vinega on Improvement of Fatigue in adults for 8 weeks.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a procedure that has been shown to improve fatigue in chronic sufferers. It uses a plastic covered coil that sends a magnetic pulse through the skull into the brain and by targeting particular areas in the brain it can be used to help modulate the perception of fatigue. The study intends to use this technique to treat such a disabling symptom in patients who suffer from Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). Initially the aim is to study this technique in 22 MSA patients who are suffering from fatigue . These patients would require an resting-state funtional MRI before and after the stimulation. The stimulation would be performed ten sessions and the patients would be assessed by a clinician using well recognized clinical tools. It is anticipated that there will be a meaningful improvement in fatigue. It is also anticipated that TMS is a safety technique to use in MSA patients . Our findings will revealed that fatigue may be associated with an altered default mode network and sensorimotor network connectivity in MSA patients. We hypothesize that these divergent motor and cognitive networks connectivity changes and their adaptive or maladaptive functional outcome may play a prominent role in the pathophysiology of fatigue in MSA.
Fatigue is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Exercise is suggested as a way to improve fatigue, but it is not clear what the effects of exercise are on fatigue - especially in people with progressive MS. Therefore, this study aims to test the feasibility of a tailored exercise programme to help improve fatigue in people with progressive MS. To do this people with progressive MS who are experiencing fatigue will be randomly allocated to receive either a tailored exercise programme, a standard exercise programme, or their usual care. Both exercise programmes will be 8 weeks long and require participants to attend Falkirk Community Hospital twice a week. The standard exercise programme involves a moderate intensity interval training session using a stationary exercise bike. The tailored exercise programme is similar to the standard exercise programme, as participants will be prescribed the same type and duration of exercise; however, the difference between the 2 programmes is that the intensity of exercise performed during each session of the tailored exercise programme is dictated by the participant's level of fatigue. Participants will complete an exercise test, walking test, and questionnaires relating to fatigue, quality of life, depression and anxiety, sleep quality, and cognition before and 1 week after completing the exercise programme.
This is a large randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to determine the efficacy of testosterone replacement on cancer-related fatigue in older men with solid or hematologic (blood) cancer who report fatigue and have low testosterone levels.
Patients with COPD will be entered. Participants will be randomized to one of three study arms: Arm 1: meditation; Arm 2: relaxation; Arm 3: Control. Hypothesis: Progressive muscle relaxation and mindfulness meditation will decrease severity of dyspnea, fatigue and care dependency.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS / MS) is a medical entity characterized mainly by debilitating and prolonged fatigue lasting more than 6 months, post-exertion fatigue (physical and / or mental), non-sleep restorative, cognitive impairment and orthostatic intolerance with prolonged recovery that is not relieved by rest. Currently, the etiopathogenic mechanisms of the disease are not known, although mitochondrial dysfunction with bioenergetic immuno-metabolism alterations, oxidative stress, and immuno-inflammatory response stands out. At present, there is no diagnostic test, nor effective treatment in the disease. ImmunoVita, is a food supplement composed of the latest yeast beta-glucans, in addition to vitamin D3, vitamin B6 and zinc, which could contribute to the normal functioning of the immune system and the inflammatory response.
This project expects to enroll 60 cancer patients, 60 healthy people and their subjective-objective measurements on fatigue, stress, and total steps will be validated so that the information can be used in further care and improvement of life of quality of the patients.
This study carried out in the HD unit of a large-scale training and research hospital, and at a dialysis center associated with this hospital located in Ankara, Turkey. Participants will be randomized to one of two study arms. Arm 1: Intervention group Arm 2: Control group Hypothesis 1. The HD patients in the 8-week intervention of BRT combined with music therapy will report lower fatigue scores than those in the control group. Hypothesis 2. The HD patients in the 8-week intervention of BRT combined with music therapy will perceive lower anxiety and depression than those in the control group.
Inflammation has been consistently associated with psychoneurological symptoms (PNS) among breast cancer survivors (BCS). Evidence supporting interventional strategies promoting symptom-self management in reducing inflammation-induced PNS in BCS is limited. Current guidelines for BCS encourage the consumption of foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. The omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), abundantly available in fish, has a role in inflammatory downregulation. Low dietary DHA has been associated with inflammation and fatigue in BCS. Dietary planning targeting increased fish consumption thereby reducing red and processed meats are components of the major nutritional recommendations for BCS. A critical gap exists in knowledge regarding interventions promoting adherence to dietary guidelines in BCS supporting PNS self-management. This investigation uses personalized meal planning among BCSs (n=150) who are 1-2 years post-treatment for early-stage breast cancer and experiencing PNS (pain, fatigue, depression, sleep disturbance, stress) to evaluate the feasibility of a personalized meal planning approach in supporting adherence to current dietary guidelines for BCS. As a first step in this program of research, we will evaluate the feasibility of an personalized meal planning approach in promoting adherence to dietary guidelines for BCS through evaluating the feasibility of a personalized meal planning approach in a cohort of BCSs with respect to recruitment, group allocation, salivary inflammatory quantification and receptivity to and adherence with dietary interventions. This investigation will also contribute to a preliminarily evaluation of the efficacy of high or low fish diet in reducing inflammation (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-a) and PNS symptoms. Nationally, there is a priority for the development of personalized health strategies supporting self-management of adverse symptoms. This investigation focused on PNS in BCS is an initial step in generating new knowledge in efficacious approaches toward guiding decisions on dietary behavior change strategies that are personalized, cost-effective, and sustainable.
