Aim 1: To determine if real-time assessments of perceived sleepiness and fatigue using text-messaging impacts an emergency medicine clinician's Attitudes, Perceived Norms, Self-Efficacy, Alertness Habits, Perceived Importance of Fatigue, Knowledge of Sleepiness/Fatigue, and Perceptions of Environmental Constraints regarding behaviors that can improve alertness during shift work. Aim 2: To determine if text-messaging emergency care workers fatigue-reduction strategies in real-time at the start and during shift work reduces worker perceived sleepiness and fatigue at the end of shift work.

The investigators wish to investigate whether enhancement of SWS, which is seen after a drug called sodium oxybate, reduces the impact of sleep disruption in CFS on daytime function, specifically sleepiness and mental performance. This is a safe and well-tolerated drug that is licensed for excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and cataplexy associated with narcolepsy. The investigators will study 12 patients diagnosed with CFS using international diagnostic guidelines. The investigators will record overnight sleep with EEG (brainwave) measurement on the 1st and 4th nights of a 4 night period during which sodium oxybate and placebo will be taken nightly, and the investigators will measure next-day sleepiness, mental performance and fatigue, and compare drug and placebo nights.

The Effect of a Carbohydrate Drink on Cognitive Function and Exercise Performance

This study will investigate the effects of hydrothermally modified starch (SuperStarch) in adults. SuperStarch, originally developed as a drink for children with glycogen storage disease, is a slow digestible carbohydrate, maintaining blood sugar levels over extended periods. Therefore, it could be beneficial to exercise and mental performance, and could possibly have fat loss effects by increasing feelings of fullness. In this study, measures will be taken in 25 men to assess mental function, appetite, and metabolism to determine the processes involved in possible fat loss.

BioSteel Sports Drink (BSD), a proprietary blend of branched chain amino acids, taurine, and B vitamins, has increased its popularity among professional and amateur athletes. BioSteel claims that BSD attenuates muscular and mental fatigue, and enhances recovery when consumed before and during intense exercise. To date, the efficacy of BSD on attenuating muscular and mental fatigue, and enhancing recovery during repeated bouts of intense exercise is unknown. In a blind crossover study, participants will be subjected to sprint interval exercise followed by muscular and cognitive function testing under two conditions: BSD and isoenergetic control.

Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms in individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD). Past researches indicated that more than half of the individuals with PD demonstrated fatigue symptom. The severity of fatigue was also correlated to the quality of life in individuals with PD. Finding the contributions of the central and the peripheral factors to fatigue, building reliable fatigue indexes, and developing an effective training program for individuals with PD are very important. The purpose of this project is to develop non-invasive method to monitor central and peripheral fatigue, to establish Virtual Reality(VR) anti-fatigue ergo cycling training paradigm, and to evaluate the long term training effect in individuals with PD.

Individualized exercise rehabilitation programs may reduce breathing problems and improve quality of life in patients with non-small cell lung cancer. It is not yet known whether pulmonary rehabilitation is more effective when started during or after cancer treatment.
