Filter by:Endurance training revealed to be an effective means to increase cardiorespiratory fitness in persons with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), considered relevant to health-related quality of life in this population. Moreover, endurance training improves MS-related symptoms, such as reduced walking capacity, fatigue, depression, and cognitive impairment. Owing to these benefits, endurance training has evolved as an integral part of MS rehabilitation, anchored in current treatment guidelines. In recent years, High-Intensity Interval training (HIIT) evolved as a time-efficient and safe alternative to standard care in MS rehabilitation that is Moderate Continuous Training (MCT). Indeed, HIIT has already been proven superior to MCT in improving cardiorespiratory fitness, MS-related symptoms (e.g. cognitive impairment) and, beyond, seems to elicit disease-modifying effects on MS-pathophysiology (i.e. alleviated neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration). However, current evidence is restricted to clinical trials that include samples with mixed MS disease courses, in which persons with primary progressive MS (PPMS) are underrepresented due to comparatively low prevalence rates. Distinct pathophysiological mechanisms and symptom constellations prohibit the generalisation of previous findings to persons with PPMS. In this population, however, evidence-based rehabilitative strategies are urgently needed, as disability progression in PPMS is poorly responsive to pharmacotherapy. This study, aims to validate previous findings on the superior effect of HIIT compared to MCT on improving cardiorespiratory fitness, MS-related symptoms and MS pathophysiology in persons with PPMS, contributing to the development of specific recommendations to maximize the effects of exercise as a potent non-pharmacological treatment adjuvant.
Assessment of physical activity on children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease using questionnaires and wrist watch based activity monitors. The participants will be recruited from paediatric IBD clinics and will undergo questionnaires to assess their activity level, disease activity and quality of life scores. The participants will then be invited to wear a wrist based accelerometer for a week. The participants will complete a physical activity diary, food diary and stool chart at the same time. Results will be analysed to see the level of physical activity and assess if the participants are meeting the recommended level of physical activity
Natriuretic Peptides (NP) are hormones produced by the heart, and they have a wide range of favorable metabolic benefits. Lower levels of these hormones are associated with an increased likelihood of the development of diabetes and poor cardiometabolic health. Obese and Black individuals have ~30% lower levels of NP and are at a greater risk of developing cardiovascular (CV) events as compared to lean and White counterparts. Some people have common genetic variations that cause them to have ~20% lower NP levels. Similar to other low NP populations, these individuals with low NP genotype (i.e., carrying a common genetic variation called rs5068) are at a greater risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases. By understanding the NP response following the exercise challenge and the glucose challenge in individuals with genetically lower NP levels will help us understand how to improve cardiometabolic health in them.
Obesity and lack of physical activity are associated with an increased risk of many chronic diseases and accelerate the processes associated with aging. Weight reduction and physical fitness are health benefits of long-term and comprehensive lifestyle modification based on nutritional habits, increased physical activity and psychotherapy. A healthy lifestyle is the basis for the prevention and treatment of obesity. However, conditions for the prescription of physical activity, nutrition and psychotherapy have not been established in our healthcare system. The aim of the project is to determine the effects of a 3-month complex intervention with/without carnosine (including aerobic/strength training, nutritional and psychological counseling) on body composition, physical fitness and circulating biochemical characteristics. Molecular biomarkers can be a very useful diagnostic markers as well as a parameter for monitoring the effectiveness of a complex lifestyle intervention. Long-term follow-up and inclusion in long-term programs will be offered to all study probands who are interested.
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men. Those in the intermediate/high-risk categories typically receive androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and radiotherapy. ADT greatly reduces androgen production as prostate cancer is dependent on testosterone and dihydrotestosterone for its growth.The side effects of ADT therapy are extensive and include changes in body composition (muscle loss, bone loss and fat gain), strength, mood, physical function, sexual function and increased cardiovascular risk and fatigue. Many of these side effects can be influenced by exercise training, both resistance training and aerobic training. However, the most appropriate exercise regime for men undergoing ADT has received little research attention.

To determine the test-retest reliability of the K5 metabolic system breath-by-breath analyzer during a high intensity treadmill protocol (Bruce Protocol).
The aim of this study is to evaluate whether there is a change in carotid intima media thickness with the application of guide-based exercise programs in individuals with prediabetes, and to evaluate whether there is a difference between the group in which exercise programs were applied and those who received only lifestyle change and metformin.
In line with the ever-growing aging of Western populations, the development of preventive strategies to slow down the effects of aging on cardiovascular health represents a major challenge in order to preserve functional capacities and a sufficient quality of life in the elderly. The alteration of vascular function (at the cerebral and systemic level) with aging is an important feature in the clinical picture including a decrease in physical and cognitive capacities. Although physical activity is recognized as an essential means of combating the effects of aging, optimizing its effects by defining the most effective strategies of practice remains a key objective. Offering alternative interventions to exercise training is also necessary for people who are unwilling or unable to engage in a physical activity program. In this context, hypoxic conditioning, alone or in conjunction with rehabilitative exercise training, is a new therapeutic modality with strong preclinical validity, in particular from a cardiovascular standpoint, and used in other pathologies to improve cardiovascular function and exercise performance and quality of life. Our aim is, therefore, to investigate the effect of hypoxic conditioning (alone or in conjunction with exercise training) on cerebrovascular health in the elderly.
Scleroderma (or Systemic Sclerosis - SSc) is one of the most neglected diseases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. In the adult population with SS, the systemic effects of the disease, such as respiratory and peripheral muscle dysfunction, cause a decrease in quality of life. As a consequence, there is a concern about functional rehabilitation, since the aging of this population is already a reality. Thus, the objective of this project is to evaluate the effects of functional rehabilitation on functional capacity and quality of life in women over 18 years of SS. In this longitudinal intervention study, patients will be submitted to a three-month rehabilitation program. Before and after the intervention, patients will be submitted to the following assessments: Cochin Hand Functional Scale (CHFS), Short-Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36); Scleroderma Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index (SHAQ-DI); lung function; lung ultrasound; handgrip; Glittre Activities of Daily Living test. Thus, it is expected that patients with SS will benefit significantly, with a consequent improvement in musculoskeletal function and , functional capacity and health-related quality of life.
Exercise is essential for building and maintaining bone mass and strength, but current exercise recommendations for how to achieve this lack detail on the optimal exercise prescription. Recent studies found that blood calcium level decreases during exercise, and that calcium is mobilized from bone to slow the decline. If this occurs repeatedly during exercise training, it could diminish the potential benefits of exercise to improve bone health. The proposed study will determine whether further research on pre-exercise supplemental calcium to minimize the decline in blood calcium level during exercise is warranted. This research is important for Veterans because they are at increased risk of hip fracture when compared with non-Veterans. Further, because osteoporosis in men is under-recognized and under-treated, providing male (and female) Veterans with more specific exercise and nutrition guidelines has the potential to enhance bone health, reduce fracture risk, and improve quality of life.
