NCT ID: NCT06384365 Recruiting - Taste, Altered Clinical Trials

Interaction of Inflammation, Taste Perception and Preferences as a Function of Physical Activity and Body Composition

Start date: April 15, 2024
Phase:
Study type: Observational

The aim of this study is to investigate whether differences in taste perception and preference behavior can be attributed to inflammatory processes induced by physical activity. The focus will be on sweet taste and the perception of fat. A non-invasive, observational study design will be used.

NCT ID: NCT06287294 Recruiting - Neoplasms Clinical Trials

An Investigation Into Taste Problems Associated With Xerostomia in Patients With Advanced Cancer

Start date: August 30, 2023
Phase:
Study type: Observational

Taste problems and xerostomia (dry mouth) are common among patients with advanced cancer. These symptoms can affect the pleasure of eating and drinking, reduce dietary intake, cause low mood, and a lower quality of life. This study will explore the relationship between dry mouth and taste problems in patients with advanced cancer.

NCT ID: NCT05486260 Recruiting - Cancer Clinical Trials

Effect of Dried Miracle Berry on the Olfactory-gustative Perception in Malnourished Cancer Patients

CLINMIR
Start date: June 23, 2022
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Cancer is one of the main causes of death globally, being in many countries the first cause of mortality. One of the main side effects of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy treatment in cancer patients is the alteration of taste and smell, internationally known as these anomalies Taste Smell Alterations (TSA). These alterations are the result of an altered cellular structure, the presence of TSA is associated with reduced quality of life and poor nutrition, due to dietary changes made by these patients. Synsepalum dulcidicum (dried miracle berry, DMB) is a plant belonging to the Sapotaceae family, made up of around 800 species grouped into around 40 genera. It is an indigenous species to the forest regions of West Africa. Nuts of this specie have been approved as a novel food in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2015/2238 and at the request of the European Commission through the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Nutrition, Novel Foods and Food Allergens. The characteristic component of DMB is miraculin. Miraculin is a glycoprotein whose consumption causes acidic and sour foods, and to a lesser extent bitter, to be perceived as having a sweet taste. In this sense, it is possible that the consumption of DMB before each meal can improve sensory perception after treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

NCT ID: NCT04791436 Recruiting - Olfactory Disorder Clinical Trials

Oral and Olfactory Complications of Recovered COVID-19 Patients

Start date: May 1, 2021
Phase:
Study type: Observational

This cohort study aims to investigate the long-standing chemosensory disorders and oral manifestation after recovery of the COVID-19 illness. A correlation between the long-standing symptoms and the COVID-19 severity grade will be very important to understand and clarify the aetiology of these symptoms.

NCT ID: NCT04716153 Recruiting - Multiple Myeloma Clinical Trials

Impact of a Sensory Rehabilitation Program on Olfactory-gustatory Alterations in Patients Treated With Chemotherapy for Haematological Cancer

RE-NEZ-SENS
Start date: June 25, 2021
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

Proposition of a sensory rehabilitation program that could reduce the olfactory-gustatory alterations in patients who have been treated with chemotherapy for Haematological Cancer, and also improve their life quality, psychological well-being, and nutrition.

NCT ID: NCT04384042 Recruiting - COVID-19 Clinical Trials

Malaysian COVID-19 Anosmia Study (Phase 2) - A Nationwide Multicentre Case-Control Study

Start date: June 6, 2020
Phase:
Study type: Observational

The Malaysian COVID-19 Anosmia Study is a nationwide multicentre observational study to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of olfactory and gustatory/taste disturbances in COVID-19 infection in Malaysia, and to evaluate the predictive value of screening for these symptoms in COVID-19 infection. This study consists of two phases: the first phase is a cross-sectional study and the second phase is a case-control study. The case-control study is described here (the cross-sectional study is described in a separate ClinicalTrials.gov record).

NCT ID: NCT03210441 Recruiting - Breast Cancer Clinical Trials

Evaluation of Eating Habits and Dysgeusia During Chemotherapy Treatment in Patients Affected by Breast Cancer

CHANGE
Start date: May 6, 2014
Phase: N/A
Study type: Observational

In post-menopause women affected by breast cancer and treated with chemotherapy, overweight and obesity are considered both a risk factors as well as a negative prognostic factors since they increase the risk of early relapse and death. Furthermore, a decrease in weight may also occur during chemotherapy and is associated to a reduced quality of life and survival. Also, the majority of patients under chemotherapy refer dysgeusia, an alteration in taste that can determine food aversion, selection of hypercaloric food or reduced food introduction up to malnutrition. Our aim is to evaluate eating habits changes in patients affected by breast cancer and under chemotherapy treatment and to better understand how this alterations influence the quality of life, anxiety, depression and insomnia of patients as well as overall survival.

NCT ID: NCT02475928 Recruiting - Liver Cirrhosis Clinical Trials

Zinc Supplementation in Cirrhotic Patients

ZnDCP
Start date: April 2015
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of zinc supplementation in the treatment for dysgeusia, progression disease and quality of life in patients with liver cirrhosis.

NCT ID: NCT02304913 Recruiting - Cancer Clinical Trials

Hypoglossal Acupuncture for Dysgeusia in Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy

OralAcu
Start date: January 2015
Phase: N/A
Study type: Interventional

This randomized controlled trial aims to investigate hypoglossal acupuncture in comparison to sham acupuncture and standard medical treatment (dietary recommendations) in the treatment of dysgeusia in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

NCT ID: NCT01584011 Recruiting - Taste Disturbance Clinical Trials

Taste Disorders in Middle Ear Disease and After Middle Ear Surgery

Start date: January 2010
Phase: N/A
Study type: Observational

Objectives To evaluate the impact of taste disturbance in different types of chronic middle ear diseases and after middle ear surgery. Hypothesis That patients with chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma has taste disturbance already before surgery due to the disease itself, of course depending on degree of the disease. That patients with otosclerosis, has a normal nerve function before surgery. That patients with normal taste before surgery are more likely to notices a taste disturbance. That nerve in continuity after surgery, even if it is maltreated, gives less taste disturbance than a divided nerve. Methods A clinical study has been launched that measures taste function with two different methods for taste measurements, electrogustometry (EGM) and the filter paper disc method (FPD) before and after middle ear surgery in patients operated with middle ear surgery because of otosclerosis, chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma. The investigators plan to include 120 patients in this study. A parallel study of the patients own experience of the symptom has also been launched were the patients answer a questionary and a quality of life document. The investigators plan to include 300 patients in this study. A histological study where specimens of CTN from healthy ears and from ears with chronic disease will be investigated with electron microscopy has also started.
