Filter by:Lycium barbarum, a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, is a commonly used herb in the traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia . Its main active ingredient, lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP), is reported to have neuroprotective effects. Animal studies suggested that LBP has neuroprotective effect on optic ganglion cells. In animal models of depression, LBP can improve depressive symptom by improving synaptic plasticity. However, its clinical effect remains to be studied. We will conduct a 6-week double-blind, randomized, placebo-con-trolled trial in people with subthreshold depression.The purpose of this clinical trial is to investigate the efficacy of LBP in people with subthreshold depression.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of a brief electronic shared decision making (eSDM) intervention on depressive symptoms in coronary heart disease patients with elevated depressive symptoms.
This project was developed to analyze the clinical, biochemical and functional impact of tDCS on depressive symptoms in participants with temporal lobe epilepsy, intending to collaborate directly in the development of new therapeutic strategies for participants with epilepsy and associated mood disorders. Another objective of this work is to add knowledge about biosafety, possible behavioral and electrophysiological effects of tDCS in participants with temporal lobe epilepsy. Depending on the findings, the study as proposed may provide immediate results for the care of participants with epilepsy.
Depression is defined as a cluster of specific symptoms with associated impairment. The clinical and diagnostic features of the disorder are broadly similar in adolescents and adults. Nevertheless, depression in adolescents is more often missed than it is in adults, possibly because of the prominence of irritability, mood reactivity, and fluctuating symptoms in adolescents. While depression is the leading cause of disability for both males and females, the burden of depression is 50% higher for females than males. In fact, depression is the leading cause of disease burden for women in both high-income and low- and middle-income countries.
The overall goal is to identify trends and longitudinal associations in psychosocial, food-related, and cardiometabolic risk factors that can guide public health priorities and future research needs aimed at reducing cardiovascular-related disparities in Puerto Rico. To this end, investigators will establish 'PROSPECT: Puerto Rico Observational Study of Psychosocial, Environmental, and Chronic disease Trends', an island-wide, longitudinal population cohort of 2,000 adults (30-75 years) in PR recruited with a community-wide sampling strategy, and assessed in a network of several partner clinics across the island. The study will collect comprehensive data on multiple psychosocial, dietary, and food-related factors, CVD biological markers, and medical record data, with follow-up at 2-years, and will assess variations by urban-rural area and by timing before-after Maria.
The aim of this study is to test the clinical effects of a web and mobile application of guided Problem Solving Therapy for depressive symptoms among the general population in Turkey.
During the past three decades, researchers have paid particular attention to the study of olfactory disorders in depression. Recent studies have shown that depression is characterized by a change in olfactory and emotional perception resulting in a decrease of the perception of positive stimuli (odors and facial expressions) and an increase in perception of negative stimuli (odors). Moreover, it has also been shown in healthy subjects that the presence of minor depressive symptoms leads to a decreasing of olfactory sensitivity. However, odor discrimination was not impaired in these subjects. This observation suggest the presence of a change in "targeted" olfactory perception in people with depressive symptoms without reporting major depression. In addition, studies in subjects with olfactory disorders (following respiratory tract infections or following Parkinson's disease) have shown an improvement in olfactory function after daily training with odors during 12 weeks. From all these observations, the hypothesis is that an olfactory training could improve the overall olfactory functioning and the emotional perception of the subjects presenting minor depressive symptoms and of the depressed patients.
The purpose of this study is to test the usefulness of a family-based program for African American parents/primary caregivers with newly diagnosed solid tumor cancer and their adolescent children. The program is designed to promote family communication reduce and depressive symptoms for adolescence.
1. To use a SMART design to evaluate which of four sequences of New Hope (NH), Elders Resilience (ER) and Case Management (CM) have the greater effects on immediate and longer-term suicidal ideation (primary outcome) and resilience (secondary outcome) among American Indian (AI) adolescents ages 10-24 identified at risk for suicide. Hypotheses: i. New Hope vs. CM alone will significantly reduce participant suicidal ideation. ii. Elders Resilience vs. CM alone will significantly improve participant resilience. iii. New Hope followed by Elders Resilience will have the strongest effects on suicidal ideation and resilience. iv. CM alone will have the weakest effects of all combinations. Secondary Aims: 2. To examine mediators and moderators of treatment effectiveness and sequencing in order to determine which types and sequence of interventions is best suited for which youth. 3. To assess the acceptability, feasibility and capacity for sustainability of the Hub's key intervention components (Surveillance/Case Management, New Hope and Elders' Resilience) from the perspective of multiple stakeholders as they are implemented across different tribes.
Apathy can be defined as a quantitative reduction of voluntary or goal-directed behavior. So, the investigators propose a behavioral approach for assessing apathy, to obtain a quantifiable and objective signature of reduced goal-directed behavior by directly observing a patient in a real-life situation. ECOCAPTURE consists of a multi-step scenario in a functional exploration platform equipped with data acquisition system based on video and sensors that track a participant's behavior. The primary objective of this trial is to create a diagnostic tool for apathy, based on the video and sensors metrics. A secondary objective of this trial is to validate a new experimental task (ICM_APATHY_TASKS) to test independently three main presumed mechanisms of apathy (motivation, cognitive inertia and coupling between motivation and action). Another secondary objective aims to specify the pathophysiological mechanisms of apathy, corresponding to cognitive and behavioral processes, neural bases and neurohormonal mechanisms. The definition of pathophysiological mechanisms will allow the classification of apathetic patients (or several forms of apathy) and indicate which mechanism (s) best explains the apathy in a given patient.
