The MIND-GUT Digital Pilot Intervention Study

This 12-week pilot study aims to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a dietary intervention targeting diet, obesity, mental health, and the gut microbiome in promoting weight loss and enhancing mental health among obese men and women aged 30-50. Participants, excluding those with specific medical conditions, will be randomly assigned to either an intervention or control group using a meal planning smartphone app. Clinical assessments will include anthropometry, mental health questionnaires, dietary recalls, and stool sample collections. The study's endpoints include program retention, adherence, changes in body weight, mental health, and gut microbiome diversity. Statistical analyses will evaluate intervention effects and the potential mediating roles of the gut microbiome. This pilot study has implications for health policies, public healthcare, digital health companies, and the biotech and pharmacology industries. Future plans involve a large-scale intervention study in multiple countries with ongoing collaborations.

Improving Sleep to Prevent Depression & Anxiety in Adolescents at High Risk

Emerging evidence has shown that sleep interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) improve depressive and anxiety symptoms in adults, even when the intervention is brief, such as four to six sessions. The overarching aim of the proposed research is to conduct a pilot trial to evaluate whether a brief intervention for insomnia adapted for improves sleep and subthreshold depressive and anxiety symptoms in adolescents at risk (i.e., with a parental history of depressive or anxiety disorders).

A Single-case Design to Investigate a Compensatory Brain Game Supporting Goal Management Training Intervention in a Psychiatric Brain Injury Population

The main cognitive complaint in brain-injured patients is often the everyday disorganization caused by Executive Function (EF) deficits. EF deficits are often seen in patients with psychiatric disorders i.e. depression or anxiety. In order to minimize everyday disorganization, effective EF interventions are required. Interventions using compensatory strategies have the potential to enable patients to minimize disabilities, minimize participation problems and to function more independently in daily life. A well-known evidence-based intervention that uses compensatory strategies is Goal Management Training (GMT), a training that has been found to alleviate depressive symptoms in a depressed population. GMT entails learning and applying an algorithm, in which a daily task is subdivided into multiple steps to handle executive difficulties of planning, and problem solving. To adopt the GMT strategy and ensure maximal profitability for patients, they have to learn to use the algorithm in different situations and tasks. Therefore, GMT is comprehensive, time-consuming and thus labour-intensive. Along with this, brain games become increasingly attractive as an (add-on) intervention, most notably in an effort to develop home-based personalized care. Until now, however, the rationale behind brain games is based on what can be considered the restorative approach (i.e. strengthening of executive problems) rather than practicing compensatory strategies, with little or no transfer to improvements in daily life functioning. This study therefore aims to assess the potential of a newly developed Brain Game, based on compensatory strategies, as an add-on to GMT to develop a shortened and partly self-paced GMT intervention. The primary objective of this study is to assess whether the use of a compensatory brain game supported GMT treatment could be of interest in people with EF deficits after ABI that also suffer from depression or anxiety, to improve goal achievement, their executive function performance during goal-related tasks, and their executive performance during an ecological valid shopping task. Also we assess whether psychological symptoms alleviate following the GMT intervention and at 6-weeks follow-up. The study will be a multiple-baseline across individuals single-case experimental design (SCED). The study population consists of brain-injured patients, between 18 and 75 years old that receive in-patient mental neuropsychiatric healthcare. Participants eligible for the study must have EF deficits due to (nonprogressive) Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), minumum time post-onset of 3 months and depressive or anxiety symptoms. EF deficits will be assessed by extensive neuropsychological examination. Participants will be recruited from an inpatient clinic. In the course of one and a half year four participants will be recruited.

Examining the Health Effects of iTHRIVE 365 Among Black Same Gender Loving Men

This research study aims to test the effectiveness, reach, and maintenance over time of the iTHRIVE 365 intervention for Black same gender loving men (SGLM) living with HIV. iTHRIVE 365 is a SGLM community-developed multicomponent mHealth intervention that aims to: 1) Support daily health promotion via HIV and psychological health education and health maintenance reminders; 2) Foster positive social connections among SGLM via online moderated forums, interpersonal chats, and community calendars; 3) Connect clients to SGLM-affirming healthcare, including HIV treatment and mental healthcare; 4) Provide resources for housing, transportation, and other economic empowerment.

There is a lack of data on patients self-reported outcomes (PROMs) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL)and symptoms on anxiety and depression 10 years after Surgical After Aortic Valve Replacement (SAVR), and patient reported experiences with the health services (PREMS). In this 10-years follow-up study on patients alive from the study named "The Impact of 24/ 7-phone Support on Readmission After Aortic Valve Replacement, a Randomized Clinical Trial (AVRre)" NCT02522663 we will repeat the survey on symtoms on anxiety and depresion using Hospital Anxiety and depression Scale (HADS), health-related quality of life (EQ-5D) and questions about experiences with the health services.

Dog Presence and Oxytocin on Trust Towards Therapists

Oxytocin has been proposed as a neuroendocrine mechanism that may mediate the relationship between dog ownership and positive health outcomes and be linked to human-dog interactions and is thought to be a mechanism of interspecies bonding. While the role of oxytocin in human bonding behaviours and social behaviour, in general, is becoming well-established the role of oxytocin in human-animal interaction and Animal-Assisted Interventions (AAI) remains unclear. This research gap calls for more high-quality research investigating this possible neuroendocrine underlying mechanism to advance knowledge about AAI. If oxytocin indeed might be involved in interspecies bonding, intranasally administered oxytocin should not only enhance trust toward a human but also towards a dog.

Implementation of Bright Light Therapy ID

Many adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) have depressive symptoms, which negatively impact their quality of life. A lot of of the non-medicinal forms of treatment are not or hardly suitable for people with ID. Bright light therapy (BLT) seems to be a good option. Earlier research has shown that BLT is applicable in this group and seems promising in terms of reducing depressive symptoms, without serious side effects. In part 1 of this project we investigate the implementation of BLT at Amarant. We will take the lessons learned into part 2 of this project: the implementation of BLT at Abrona. We will evaluate this process and the outcomes.

The Oh Happy Day Class - Digital Connections (OHDC-DC): A Pilot Study

The goal of this clinical trial is to see if a mobile phone app can deliver depression treatment to African Americans who are depressed. The main question it aims to answer is if this treatment is effective in reducing symptoms of depression. Participants will attend six 90-minute weekly classes via an app on their phone, and will be asked to complete surveys every week. Participants can expect to be in the study for four months.
