Validation of Smart Garments for Gait Classification

The aim of this study is therefore to validate Myant SKIIN garments for the purpose of gait and balance assessment. To achieve this, we recruit young healthy adults from the University of Waterloo to wear Skiin products (see Fig. 1). Participants will be asked to perform a number of scripted gait and balance tasks.

JoyPop Mobile Mental Health App With Indigenous Youth

Indigenous youth in Northwestern Ontario who need mental health supports experience longer waits than non-Indigenous youth within the region and when compared to youth in other more urban areas. Limited access and extended waits can exacerbate symptoms, prolong distress, and increase risk for more serious outcomes. Novel, innovative approaches are urgently needed to provide support for Indigenous youth in Northwestern Ontario. In partnership with Dilico Anishinabek Family Care, the investigators are evaluating the impact of a mental health app (JoyPop) as a tool for Indigenous youth who are waiting for mental health services. The JoyPop app was developed to support improved emotion regulation - a key difficulty for youth presenting with mental health challenges. A two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the app compared to usual practice while Indigenous youth are waiting for mental health services.

Virtual Reality Distraction for Dental Anxiety (PILOT)

Introduction. Dental fear and anxiety (DFA) is a condition that affects approximately a quarter of children and adolescents. Lack of patient cooperation due to DFA can create an environment of stress, often obligating dentists to end appointments prematurely. Virtual reality use could improve DFA in children with special health care needs (SHCN) undergoing dental procedures. Aim. Assess the feasibility and acceptability of VR immersion as a tool to reduce dental fear and anxiety in pediatric special needs patients undergoing dental procedures and gain insight on parents and healthcare providers perspectives on the use of VR during dental appointments. Methods. This pilot randomized controlled trial study will follow a parallel design including two groups: A control group (clinic's standard care) and an experimental group (virtual reality). Twenty participants will be randomized to either group. Recruitment will be carried out at the dental clinic of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Sainte-Justine, a tertiary-quaternary care center that mostly serves pediatric patients with SHCN. The experimental group will receive the VR video game Dream designed specifically for this study. It aims at reducing anxiety in children aged 6 to 17 years old by mean of immersive distraction. The VR headset offers children with the ability of viewing the game they are playing in real time while simultaneously obstructing the partial view they would normally have of the procedure. The primary outcome will be assessment of dental fear and anxiety in children using both observation-based proxy assessment with the Venham Anxiety and Behavior Rating Scale (VABRS) and a physiological biomarker such as the level of salivary alpha-amylase. Sociodemographic characteristics, measures of level of satisfaction of parents and healthcare professionals, occurrence of side effects and any deviation from normal procedure length will also be collected. Analysis will be carried out using statistical analysis software SAS (version 9.4; Cary, NC, USA). Descriptive statistics will be conducted for demographic and clinical variables and will be used to present parents and healthcare professionals' satisfaction levels, and also procedural time. Discussion. The investigators believe that the results of this pilot study will provide a better understanding of the feasibility and effect of VR on DFA in children with SHCN.

Emotion Focused Therapy for Competitive Athletes

This project will be a pilot study to test the feasibility of using Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) among competitive athletes experiencing mild-to-moderate depression or anxiety. To test whether the intervention works, the researchers will assess athletes' emotion dysregulation, symptoms of mood disorders (anxiety and depression), sport-related distress, subjective performance satisfaction, and well-being. In addition to assessing athlete outcomes, key aspects to be examined in the pilot study include the recruitment and randomization procedures, informed consent procedures, data collection tools, implementation of the intervention, and retention of participants. Feasibility will be assessed by recruitment (willingness to be randomized, number of eligible participants in the recruitment process). Retention will be assessed by the number of athletes who continue or discontinue attendance. Participants' experiences in the intervention will be assessed via qualitative interviews to gain in-depth information about their perceptions of the intervention.

Online Physical Exercise for Chronic Low Back Pain

This study aims to evaluate the effects of technology-based interventions, specifically web-based platforms, on outcomes of patients with chronic low back pain. The objectives are to develop and evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of these interventions, and to examine factors such as age and gender on implementation and adherence. It consists of an interventional proof-of-concept pilot study with 45 participants randomly divided into 3 groups: an interactive physical activity group, a pre-recorded video physical activity group, and a control group. Assessments will be conducted at weeks 0 and 12 to measure pain intensity with the Canadian adaptation of the National Institutes of Health minimal dataset for chronic low back pain.

Evaluating a Virtual Stepped Care Portal in Youth Awaiting Tertiary Chronic Pain Care: An Implementation-Effectiveness Hybrid Type III Study

Pain is one of the most common symptoms of extreme stress in youth. Without treatment, short-term pain can last for months to years (called 'chronic pain'; CP), a problem already affecting 1 in 5 Canadian youth. The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the greatest threats to youth mental health seen in generations. CP in childhood can trigger a wave of mental health issues that last well into adulthood. In 2019, we learned that "access to pain care" is poor and a priority for youth with CP and their families. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has only made access more difficult. In 2020, we created an online "stepped care" program called the Power over Pain Portal for youth with CP. Stepped care is a promising way to improve access to CP care by tailoring care based on the symptoms each youth is experiencing. Like a ladder, youth start with one type of care and then "step up" or "step down" to more or less intense care depending on what they need. Over the past year, funded by CIHR, we worked with hundreds of youth and healthcare professionals across Canada to understand how the pandemic has affected pain and mental health. We also summarized all online pain self-management programs including peer support for youth to find the best resources to include in the Portal and will translate the portal content into French. Together with a diverse group of youth with CP, we have now co-designed the online Portal. The next step (focus of this grant) is to test the Portal with youth to ensure it can be implemented and is helpful. We will recruit 93 youth with CP waiting for specialist care at 11 CP clinics across Canada to use the Portal for 4 months. We will see how they use the Portal and if it helps to improve their pain and mental health. This study is important because it will allow us to understand how the Portal works in the real world before wide public release (English and French) to support all youth in Canada with CP with accessible, evidence-based pain care.
