Evaluating the Feasibility, Health and Behavioral Impact of Mid-Ohio Farmacy + WW

The aim of this research is to undertake a feasibility study to assess uptake and impact of providing access to a widely available weight management and wellness program (WW; formerly known as Weight Watchers) among individuals experiencing food insecurity and overweight/obesity, who are eligible to receive weekly produce at the Mid-Ohio Food Collective (MOFC) through their pre-existing enrollment in the Mid-Ohio Farmacy program. Participants (n=90) adults over the age of 18 with a BMI between 27-50 kg/m2 will be recruited for a 6 month single-arm clinical trial, where participants will be provided with WW Unlimited Workshop + Digital. The primary objective is to test the feasibility and acceptability of a commercial weight loss and wellness program with an established produce prescription program among individuals experiencing food insecurity and overweight/obesity. Secondary outcomes will include assessments related to weight, height, blood pressure, dietary intake, physical activity, food access, depression, wellbeing and economic factors. This feasibility study will help inform future interventions among this population. More specifically, this study will help answer questions about the feasibility and acceptability of such an intervention, adherence to the WW program as described to the participant, and the impact that access to a free weight management and wellness program can have on health-related outcomes among individuals experiencing food insecurity and overweight/obesity.

As a result of unhealthful lifestyle practices including nighttime ingestion and excess energy-dense food and beverage intake, college students are presenting with metabolic abnormalities and excess weight gain that increases their risk for chronic health conditions including cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Research has shown that prolonging nightly fasting intervals can result in health improvements in both animal models and human subjects. Time-restricted feeding (TRF), a form of intermittent fasting may offer an exciting, non-pharmacologic approach to improve cardiometabolic health in this population by restricting food intake to feeding windows that align with circadian biology.

Mental Health in Fitness Instructors

The aim of this project is to improve the evidence-base regarding lifestyle and mental health symptoms among fitness instructors. A national cohort of fitness instructors will be invited to participate in this study by responding to an online questionnaire. The questionnaire will consist of items regarding exercise, nutrition, eating disorders, the menstrual cycle, depression, anxiety, body dissatisfaction and satisfaction, drive for muscularity and leanness, and experiences of sexual harassment. Findings from this study will provide an evidence-base for initiatives to improve/optimize mental health among fitness instructors, and also in the process of developing fitness centres to a core partner in public health and health promotion work.

Increased Monitoring of Physical Activity and Calories With Technology

Since severe obesity in youth has been steadily increasing. Specialized pediatric obesity clinics provide programs to aid in reducing obesity. Since the home environment and parental behavioral modeling are two of the strongest predictors of child weight loss during behavioral weight loss interventions, a family-based treatment approach is best. This strategy has been moderately successful in our existing, evidence-based pediatric weight management program, Brenner Families In Training (Brenner FIT). However, since programs such as Brenner Families in Training rely on face-to-face interactions and delivery, they are sometimes by the time constraints experienced by families. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop and pilot a tailored, mobile health component to potentially increase the benefits seen by Brenner FIT standard program components and similar pediatric weight management programs.
