Predicting Insulin Resistance in American Indian Youth

The purpose of this study is to identify risks that may contribute to increased insulin resistance which may help explain some of the increased incidence of type 2 diabetes in American Indian Youth, at the Rosebud reservation ages 5 to 18 years old. If specific positive indicators of insulin resistance are present, individuals are recruited back in one year for repeat of all measures.

The subjects were also submitted to several personality trait inventory, that evaluated respectively Alexithymia, Emotional Intelligence, Resilience and the Five Factor Model of Personality. The Effect of Beta-Blockers and Aspirin on Hemostasis and Endothelial Function After Acute Mental Stress

This randomized double-blinded controlled trial uses a factorial design to investigate whether application of beta-blockers (inderal 80 mg) or aspirin (100 mg) or a combination thereof has an effect on the activation of the hemostatic system, the platelets and the endothelium in response to acute mental stress. Specifically we test the hypothesis that inderal attenuates the activation of the hemostatic system as compared to placebo. The second hypothesis is that aspirin attenuates the activation of platelets as compared to placebo. Subjects will be randomly allocated to either of the four following study arms: placebo - inderal - aspirin - inderal plus aspirin. Subjects will receive the study medication for five days prior to the mental stress. The acute mental stress consists of a public speaking session of 10 min duration immediately followed by a mental arithmetic test of 5 min duration. Blood will be collected prior to the stress, immediately thereafter, at 45 min at at 1 hour and 45 min.

Health SMART (Stress Management and Relaxation Training) to Improve Vaccine Immune Response

The proposed investigation will conduct a randomized, clinical trial to test the efficacy of a cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) group intervention on immune response to vaccine and distress among women at elevated risk for breast cancer. Hypothesis 1: Women who participate in the CBSM intervention will have a larger primary and secondary antibody response to vaccines compared to women in the comparison group. Hypothesis 2: Women who participate in a 10-week CBSM group intervention will report lower levels of distress immediately after and 6 months after the intervention compared to women in the comparison group.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains the leading cause of death in the elderly. Silent myocardial ischemia (SI) is a manifestation of CAD in which there is a transient alteration in myocardial perfusion, function, and/or electrical activity not accompanied by chest pain. Mental and emotional stress, in particular hostility and anger are potent inducers of SI, Individuals with SI are at a 3-5 fold higher risk for the development of angina, myocardial infarction and death than subjects without SI.
