This protocol proposes a well-being program, delivered through an application for mobile devices, based on meditation and positive psychology principles such as human development, the improvement of virtues, quality of life and well-being. The investigators hypothesize that this program offered in mobile application may promote well-being and reduce stress related problems in the participants. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of a well-being program delivered through an application for mobile devices in a sample of high school students. Methods: Sixty high school students will be recruited. The participants will be randomized in two groups of 30 participants each one, half of them in the control group (GC) and the other half to the intervention group (GI).
Education is a process of human development for quality of life. Nurse anesthetist students in 1-year training program have to face occasional stress perioperatively such as long and unpredictable working hours, exposure to chemical and radiation hazards, or the occurrence of unexpected death, particularly when a given patient was previously healthy. This can sometimes prove frustrating and may lead to unsafe practices. Students with mild to moderate stress, act as achievement motive, driving them to succeed their goals in learning. However, anyone with severe stress often fails in his or her study. If learners face tension during their education and they are not able to solve it instantaneously; the stress becomes a vicious matter.
The purpose of pilot study application is to build on the investigators' previous work that established the prospective association between stress and infertility. Specifically, the investigators hope to collect the preliminary data necessary to make them competitive to submit a R01 application to NIH for funding of a full-scale randomized controlled trial of an internet-based stress management program to examine its efficacy in decreasing stress and increasing pregnancy rates among women who have tried to get pregnant for 6-12 months without success. The program called Stress Free Now (SFN) was developed at the Cleveland Clinic and has been shown to be effective in lowering stress in a variety of populations. The program introduces concepts of mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral therapy to assist individuals in managing their stress levels. The intervention includes Internet-based interaction, daily emails and recommended relaxation practice of at least four days per week. Using targeted Facebook Ads and other recruitment modalities, the investigators will randomize 40 women ages 18-34 who have been trying to conceive for 6-12 months without success. The PI has been enrolling women in a similar study using this mechanism and has found it to be an efficient and cost-effective method of identifying potentially eligible individuals. Women will be randomized to SFN or a wait list control condition and will be followed for up to three months post-randomization with weekly journals as they try to conceive. The primary outcome of this randomized controlled trial is stress level, as measured by salivary alpha-amylase, while the secondary outcome will be pregnancy rate at the end of the three-month follow-up period.
1. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY 1.1 Justification The purpose of the project is to examine the effect of breathing biofeedback and thoughts about stress on performance under stress and cigarette cravings. Smoking rates in the United States have been steadily going down over the past 50 years, and now 16.8% of adults smoke (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). Most smokers try to quit, but end up going back to smoking (Garcia-Rodriguez et al., 2013; Piasecki, 2006; Rafful et al., 2013). The reasons people go back to smoking may have something to do with stress in their lives, particularly for women who smoke. This study wants to see if we can reduce temporary stress and lower craving to smoke after stress. 1.2 Description of the Research Project Approximately 60 adult women will participate in the study. Participants must be between 18 and 65 years old, able to read English fluently, and must agree to engage in the research procedures (stress protocol, physiological assessment, breathing training, questionnaires) to participate. People who are taking medications that interfere with physiological assessment are excluded from participating including people with: self-identified substance use problems, self-identified psychosis, morbid obesity (BMI>40), and people who take anti-cholinergic medication, beta blockers, Ritalin, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants or bupropion, varenicline, antipsychotic medication, or nicotine replacement therapy. People who have a cardiac rhythm abnormality or major neurological problem are also excluded from the study. Also, participants may not participate if they are pregnant or color-blind. Participation is strictly voluntary. 2. PROGRESSION OF THIS STUDY 2.1 Procedures The study visit procedures will take place at the Emotion and Psychopathology Laboratory at Rutgers University, located at the Rutgers Institute for Health, Healthcare Policy, and Aging Research. Participants will first complete some questionnaires and provide some basic information about themselves (demographic information, responses to emotion and stress, and smoking history). Next, participants will engage in a baseline psychophysiological assessment where investigators will examine heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure. Next, investigators will either ask participants to sit quietly for 30 minutes while completing a computer task and watching short videos, or practice a specific deep breathing exercise for 30 minutes. Then participants will do three tasks on a computer. The tasks will ask participants to trace different shapes, answer math problems while receiving feedback about how they're doing, and identify colors and words on a screen. Finally, participants will be asked to sit quietly for 15 minutes before investigators remove the psychophysiological recording equipment. One week after the study visit, investigators will contact participants via phone to ask them some questions about the study visit. 2.2 Duration of the study This study visit will last approximately 3 hours. Length of the visit may vary because each individual may complete procedures at a different pace. The phone call after the study visit will last approximately 10-15 minutes.
A randomized controlled trial is needed to strengthen the evidence in the area of web-based self-management programs for stress-reduction. Aim The aim for the study is to compare the effects of the web-application that supports behavior change in stress-management to a waiting list group in persons with perceived stress. Method This study will have the design of a randomized controlled trial (RCT). The CONSORT guidelines will be used for reporting the study. Sample: Different sectors in the region will be included. Three different high-schools in Västerås City, social services authority in Västerås municipality, a large private company in the region, three different clinics within the county council and the municipality of Köping have signed the attestation of participation. Intervention: The intervention is the program for web-based stress self-management My Stress Control. Procedure: After informed consent the participants will, during approximately 2-4 months by their own go through the web-based program for stress self-management. The waiting-list group will also get access to My Stress Control after post-measurements. Data-analysis: Descriptive statistics will be used for demographic data. Missing data will be replaced as recommended for the different measurements included, commonly by using the mean for responded items within the sub scale. Inferential analyses will be conducted by using multivariate statistical analysis. Drop-out analysis will be conducted by comparing pre-interventions measures for those who completed the program with those who did not.
Patients who undergo in vitro fertilization with or without intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF / ICSI) often experience an impact on their quality of life and emotional maladjustment to treatment and outcome. Multiple contributors to this negative impact have been identified, including interference with professional activities, expenses related to fertility treatment and hormonal side effects. In-vitro maturation (IVM) of human oocytes obtained from minimally stimulated or unstimulated ovaries offers a more "patient friendly" treatment option than the conventional ovarian stimulation protocols for Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) treatment. Historically, IVM has been offered to women with increased ovarian response (so-called "high responders"), typically women with polycystic ovaries (PCO/PCOS), who are at increased risk for ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) if conventional ART protocols are used. IVM treatment programs are characterised by a minimal administration of fertility hormones, are less disruptive to patients' daily life through a reduced need for hormonal and ultrasound monitoring, avoid a range of minor and major complications because of the reduced hormonal burden of this procedure, and aim to reduce the total cost for of infertility treatment. To facilitate the application of IVM as a treatment that can potentially improve the overall patient experience, a study comparing the psychological impact of a conventional ovarian stimulation protocol versus an IVM protocol will be conducted; furthermore, a study investigating the differences in quality of life between the two subgroups will also be performed. Socio-demographic data, medical characteristics and the following questionnaires will be collected: Specific questions for patients with fertility problems (FertiQol); Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) and an instrument to measure side effects designed by the research group. The study group (IVF patients and IVM patients) will be evaluated at three predefined time points: at intake, after oocyte collection and when the outcome after the first embryo transfer is known. Descriptive analysis, intergroup comparisons and explanatory/predictive model of the dependent variables (quality of life, emotional adjustment) will be performed.
This proposal is part of a broader research agenda that posits healthy gestational weight gain (GWG) may be achieved through behavioral intervention and may potentially reduce adverse maternal and infant health outcomes associated with excessive weight gain during pregnancy. The purpose of this study is to examine the use of a mobile application (mobile app) and mobile website for encouraging and maintaining healthy behaviors such as healthy eating, regular exercise, and stress management and reduction during pregnancy. The study will include collaborative group-based health behavior challenges for pregnant women living in the United States. The study will test the effectiveness of the intervention on improving maternal health behaviors. The proposed research project will examine if an intervention targeting healthy eating and exercise leads to significantly less weight gained during pregnancy versus a comparison group that receives stress reduction and management content.
The purpose of this study is to test whether certain brain training activities can promote cognitive, emotional, and physical health in caregivers of a loved one with dementia. Numerous studies show that family dementia caregiving can be stressful, and can increase mental and physical health risks. This study aims to understand how to reduce those risks.
