Filter by:This study will investigate the effect of simulation-based training with mastery learning (SBML) on novice performers' lumbar puncture (LP) performance in a clinical setting. The study will investigate the effect on operators' performance, stress level, and on patient experienced stress, confidence in operator, and patient-related outcomes of pain, and risk of subsequent Post Dural Puncture Headache (PDPH), and days of sickness leave. The study will compare the effect of the training to a control group of novices receiving standard training and additionally to an intermediate and an expert group. The study will provide insight into the translational effect from the simulation based setting to clinical performance. Further, the study will explore: if stress decreases operators' performance; if operators stress affects the patient stress level; and the effect of SBML on patient-related outcomes.
This protocol of meditation is based on mindfulness program proposes to train meditation during the hemodialysis session. The investigators hypothesize that this program offered during hemodialysis session may promote well-being, reduce symptoms of stress and depression reported by the patients, which ultimately may improve biochemical parameters resulting from better adherence to treatment. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of mindfulness meditation practice in patients on chronic hemodialysis, in order to verify if this training can improve symptoms of depression, stress, quality of life and sleep disturbances. Methods: fifty patients will be separated in two groups, twenty five each group, half of them in the control group (CG) and the other half to the intervention group (IG). The patients will be evaluated pre- and pos-protocol.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate a model of mindfulness and neurofeedback among physicians and nurses. Several hypotheses will be tested: 1) BIS values will decrease as the number of sessions increase, 2) wellbeing scores will increase as the number of learning sessions increase, 3) wellbeing scores will be associated with BIS values, and 4) different attentional states will have more or less influence on reducing the BIS value.
The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of physical exercise through a protocol of concurrent training in the psychological, physical, hormonal and sexual aspects in middle aged men with androgen deficiency in the aging male (ADAM). The study design with randomized clinical trial, comprising men in middle age (40 to 59 years) with ADAM, should be divided into two groups: 1) Control group (CG); 2) Experimental group (EG). Information related to sociodemographic and clinical profile will be collected; Psychological aspects (depressive and anxiety symptoms - Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale ; stress - Perceived Stress Scale); Physical acpects (IMC; Percentage of body fat; Abdominal obesity - waist circumference in cm; Muscle strength - Biodex System 4 PRO isokinetic dynamometer; cardiorespiratory Fitness - Cycle-ergometer - CASE ECG Stress Testing System, General Electric Medical Systems, Milwaukee, WI); Hormonal aspects (total and free testosterone - blood collection); Sexual Aspect (Sexual satisfaction- International Index of Erectile Function); DAEM (scale of symptoms of aging). Apply a physical exercise protocol using the functional training method over a six-month period. All information will be collected before and after the intervention period. For statistical analysis, use the SPSS statistical package, version 20.0. (Kolmogorov-Smirnov or Shapiro-Wilk test) for the selection of statistical tests.
Pain is a major problem in the care of children in pediatric emergencies. Indeed, its relief rests on the oral communication of the young patient, who does not always able to it (difficult to verbalize, fear of the hospital, problem mental development ...). There is no way in which pain can be apprehended objectively, immediately and effectively. To advance our knowledge of this problem, several approaches have been studied as from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), or from autonomic parameters. However, all these approaches have their limitations: although fMRI presents interesting performances, it allows only a retrospective analysis, and cannot adapt to the clinical context of the young patient for example. EEG-based approaches and autonomic parameters show interesting results but suffer from perfectible sensitivity to muscle activation for EEG whereas the vegetative parameters to stress. In this context, our working hypothesis considers that the search for markers of painful perception must be based on a neurophysiological approach, based on the combined analysis of the EEG and autonomic responses in real time. The aim of this work is to study (1) the cortical (EEG) and autonomic (cardiovascular, skin, pupillary) responses induced by sutures in children who can communicate their pain according to whether they cause pain or not.
Stress and anxiety can worsen quality of life in patients seen in primary care practices. Patients at predetermined practices age 20-65 receive psychosocial screening instruments for anxiety and quality of life (GAD7 and SF-12) at six month intervals for twenty-four months as part of routine care. Assessing anxiety and quality of life every six months will provide data to analyze whether anxiety and quality of life changes over time. Patients who consent will also be asked at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months about medical utilization of behavioral care or any medical care outside of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in order to be part of their research record for good clinical care. If patients received any behavioral treatment, the patient will also be asked questions regarding the helpfulness of this treatment. This is an observational characterization study to understand the psychiatric and behavioral needs of primary care patients. The follow-up questionnaires and medical record information will look at the rates and predictors of hospitalizations and/ or behavioral health treatment as a longitudinal way to track these symptoms over time. These resources are critical to determine the need for embedded behavioral care in primary care settings.
The study goal is to evaluate user experience with our developed exergame, which was designed to increase physical activity, exercise self-efficacy, and social connections among caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or related dementias. Participants will use this garden-themed exergame for six weeks. Tailoring an exergame for caregivers of AD or related dementias has the potential to increase physical activity and to improve overall health and well-being in this vulnerable population, which in turn can benefit the patients for whom they provide care. All study sessions be held at a location convenient to participants.
Mindfulness interventions are increasingly offered to undergraduate students at universities world-wide, however the evidence base is very limited. The objective is to evaluate effects of a customized mindfulness intervention (called Mindfulness-Based College) on undergraduate student health. A superiority randomized controlled trial with parallel groups will be performed with 30 participants in each arm. Participants will be randomly assigned to Mindfulness-Based College or health education waitlist control. Investigators will be blinded to treatment allocation. Participants will be assessed at baseline, 10 weeks, and six months. The primary outcome is a college health summary score, including seven evidence-based determinants of health particularly relevant to college student well-being: body mass index, physical activity, diet, alcohol consumption, sleep quantity, perceived stress, and loneliness. Primary intention-to-treat analyses will evaluate whether MB-College vs. control is associated with the summary score, utilizing generalized linear models. Secondary analyses will evaluate which, if any, of the seven determinants of health are driving associations.
Within the components of Scuba diving there are similarities with meditation and mindfulness techniques. Perceived stress is known to be diminished during meditation practice. This study evaluates the benefits of scuba diving on perceived stress and mindful functioning.
