Filter by:To date it is unknown how physical activity levels in adults is limited before and after lumbar spine surgery and if physical activity level is associated with disability and limitations of quality of life. The main objective is to compare physical activity preoperatively and 6 and 12 weeks postoperatively in patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery with norm data. In addition, the investigators will study the association of changes in physical activity, disability and quality of live.
Approximately 40% of patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty develop acute to moderate post operative pain. Furthermore 20-30% develop chronic post operative pain. The objective of this work is to study the effectiveness and safety of pulsed radiofrequency of the saphenous nerve realized during the pre-operative period of total knee arthroplasty. The study design is a randomized, blinded clinical trial. Patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty are divided into two groups. The first group procedure consists in pre-operative pulsed radiofrequency under ultrasound guidance of the saphenous nerve and standard postoperative pain management by the pain clinic. The second group receives only the standard postoperative pain management by the pain clinic. Patient follow ups are performed 3 times (after 2 weeks, 2 months and 6 months) within a period of 6 months, evaluating pain severity using the VAS.
After conduction a pilot study, pupillary dilation reflex (PDR) is measured in response to nociceptive stimulation perioperatively in infants, children and adolescents.
The purpose of the study is to determine the efficacy of IV acetaminophen when administered to neurosurgical patients at the beginning and end of their surgery. If the result is improved pain control with less opioid consumption postoperatively, then those patients may also experience less opioid related side effects such as nausea/vomiting, pruritus, and sedation. While numerous other studies have failed to show a benefit of IV acetaminophen after neurosurgical procedures, we are studying the administration of 1 g in two doses over the course of the operation.
A gap of knowledge exists on the understanding of the acute effects of stabilization exercises on pain, disability and physical performance when applied after radiofrequency denervation. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to show the effects of stabilization exercises when started in acute period and also reduce the frequency of recurrence low back pain of patients with FJS after radiofrequency denervation.
Aim 1: Develop and manualize the Education and Gentle Exercise intervention. Using focus groups, clinical reasoning, literature, and findings from previously tested interventions of yoga and self-management, the researchers will develop, refine, and standardize the Education and Gentle Exercise intervention for chronic pain. In parallel, the researchers will develop a control group that includes exercise and health and wellness education. The expected outcomes include Education and Gentle Exercise intervention workbooks for participants and training and teaching manuals for interventionists leading the Education and Gentle Exercise intervention group and control group. Aim 2: Assess feasibility and acceptability of an online intervention, the Education and Gentle Exercise and research procedures including planned assessments. In this small RCT, the researchers will examine feasibility and acceptability of the 8-week Education and Gentle Exercise procedures and intervention compared to an exercise and health and wellness education control group. Participants will include 30 caregiving dyads randomly assigned to the two groups (15 dyads for Education and Gentle Exercise, and 15 dyads for control group; N = 30 dyads/60 participants). The primary hypothesis is that Education and Gentle Exercise will be feasible and acceptable to caregiving dyads, as measured by benchmarks for recruitment, screening, attendance, and completion of assessments and intervention. Surveys will be administered and focus groups will be conducted to understand participant satisfaction and experiences with Education and Gentle Exercise. After each intervention session, interventionists, caregivers, and care recipients will rate their satisfaction with the session content and activities.
Interferential current is a form of electrotherapy that is obtained by placing two different plates that produce medium frequency waveform current, resulting in a low frequency interferential waveform in deeper tissues. It was shown interferential current electrotherapy is beneficial for reduction of traumatic edema in tissues and pain control. Patients with conservatively managed distal radius fractures were recruited after casts are shed, and were treated with one session(30 minutes) of different protocols of interferential current electrotherapy. Before and after therapy, they were evaluated with volumetry, hand grip strength and visual analogue scale for pain.
- Purpose The general purpose of this project is to assess the utility of the mCare application and MHCE (Mobile Healthcare Environment) system - a secure, mobile, smartphone app based platform - for same day surgery postoperative follow up of patients receiving peripheral nerve blocks. - Research Design Randomized open-label study, comparing the satisfaction of the two groups with the method of follow up, which is either over the phone or via a mCare application. A separate group made up of nurses and physicians will have the opportunity to take a short anonymous survey to rank their opinion on the use of the smartphone application for patient feedback.
This is an interventional, first-in-man study, double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-part, ascending doses study to investigate the safety, tolerability and efficacy of STR-324 infusions in healthy volunteers.
Objective: The study aimed to assess the effect of topical application of an amino acid + sodium hyaluronate acid gel after lower third molar extraction. Study design: 136 patients requiring lower third molar extraction were enrolled. An amino acid + sodium hyaluronate acid (HA) gel was applied to the sockets of the patients in the treatment group immediately following extraction; the sockets of the controls were simply flushed with a sterile saline solution. 7 and 14 days after surgery, patients' outcomes and postoperative complications were evaluated. Cumulative incidence of dehiscence and secondary outcome measures were analyzed using a chi-square test.
