Filter by:The objective of this project is to determine the biological, neurobehavioral, and behavioral compensatory responses to exercise training-induced energy deficits in overweight to obese men and women. Participants will engage in exercise at either 2 days or 6 days per week for 12 weeks and have body composition assessed via DXA before and after the exercise intervention. Accumulated energy balance (weight loss converted to kcal) will be compared to exercise energy expenditure to determine each individual's level of compensation, termed compensation index. Predictors of compensation index that will be assessed will include hunger/satiety hormone concentrations at rest and in response to a meal, reward driven feeding, changes in metabolic rate, and energy intake throughout the intervention. Exercise reinforcement and physical activity will also be assessed as a separate aim to determine if exercise reinforcement can be increased and if this can promote greater habitual physical activity after the intervention has ceased.
Many provinces in Indonesia have some well known traditional foods that are widely consumed, but it remains unknown whether traditional ethnic dietary patterns can confirm healthy diets. High quality diet is associated with reduced risk of metabolic diseases and modulated gut microbiota. Moreover, the relationship between dietary quality and microbiota, a potential mediator of metabolic disease, has not been studied.
Bariatric surgery represents the best therapeutic option to induce sustainable weight loss and to solve serious comorbidities improving the life-expectancy and the quality of life. Actually the choice of the procedure is based on the surgeon's and patients preference . Mini gastric bypass(MGB) is an emerging procedure offering excellent results in terms of weight loss and comorbidities (mainly metabolic) control. On the other hand, recent data indicated that the gut microbiota may mediate some of the beneficial effects of bariatric surgery and changes in the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota have been observed after RY Gastric Bypass (RYGB) in humans as well as in mice. However, there are no prospective investigations on Gut Microbiota changes after MGB, despite the procedure is described as "malabsorptive" and there are no studies comparing gut microbiota shift and malabsorption entity in humans after RYGB vs MGB. Thereafter prospective data on the incidence of bile reflux esophageal lesions after MGB are lacking. The aim of the present multicentric prospective comparative study is to evaluate malabsorption and gut microbiota shift after laparoscopic RYGB vs MGB at 1 year.
Obesity has numerous comorbidities that are associated with exceedingly high healthcare costs. In addition to well- characterized impairments in lipid and glucose metabolism, obesity is associated with altered protein metabolism. We have recently observed that obese individuals are essentially nonresponsive to protein ingestion with respect to myofibrillar protein synthesis. This suggests that skeletal muscle remodeling in obese individuals is impaired possibly contributing to a poor metabolic quality of muscle. Resistance exercise is known to strongly augment muscle protein synthesis in response to protein ingestion. The purpose of this research is to determine the muscle protein synthetic response during post-exercise recovery in obese individuals. Using stable isotope methodology, we will determine the postprandial muscle protein synthetic response in 14 male and female obese adults (Age: 20-45, BMI: 30-39.9 kg/m2) immediately after an acute bout of resistance exercise. Participants will be sedentary (< 60 min exercise/ week) and weight stable for a minimum of 6 months. During the testing blood and muscle samples will be collected. In addition participants will be asked to perform moderate intensity resistance exercise. Completion of the proposed research will identify the role of resistance exercise in the maintenance of skeletal muscle tissue after the consumption of a protein-dense meal in obese people.
The primary aim of this study is to is to determine if intermittent fasting (IMF) is an effective dietary strategy for treatment of obesity. A 1 year randomized trial will be used to compare weight loss generated by IMF versus Daily Caloric Restriction (DCR). The targeted weekly energy deficit is designed to be similar (~30%) and a comprehensive behavioral support program will be provided to both groups. The primary outcome is weight change at the end of the 1 year intervention; follow up measures will also be obtained 6 months after completing the intervention. This study will provide robust data regarding weight loss effectiveness of IMF and will further our understanding of the impact of IMF on energy balance.
Over nutrition has led to an increasing overweight and obese population. Maintaining a calorie deficit can be difficult causing many patients to be unsuccessful at weight loss attempts. There are many smart phone applications that are labeled as weight loss aids, MyFitnessPal™ being one of these applications. MyFitnessPal ™ assists users to help record calorie intake to maintain a balanced caloric intake and to avoid over nutrition Primary Hypothesis: This study is testing the hypothesis that subjects using a smart phone calorie calculator with intervention will have a greater body fat percentage loss in 8 weeks when compared to the control group. Secondary Hypothesis: Subjects using a smart phone calorie calculator with intervention will report improved self-body image in 8 weeks.
Response inhibition is a cognitive process that helps individuals suppress or avoid unwanted actions and inappropriate behavior. In regards to food, response inhibition allows a person to resist eating, ignore poor food choices and poor behavior related to food choices. Previous research suggests that physical activity may play a role in the regulation of response inhibition to food in adults. The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of an acute bout of active video gaming versus passive video gaming on response inhibition to high calorie and low calorie food images among adolescents. The proposed study is a randomized cross-over study with counterbalanced design. Participants will come to the lab two times. Each subject will serve as their own control. There will be two conditions and all participants will complete both conditions. One condition will be completed each time the participants come to the lab. The two conditions will include (a) 60 minutes of sedentary video game play and (b) 60 minutes of active video game play at moderate-intense levels. After each video game condition the participants will view pictures of high-calorie and low-calorie foods while being connected to an EEG machine. The EEG will measure the N2 and P3 event-related potentials, which will be used to index and analyze response inhibition. As participants view the pictures of high-calorie and low-calorie foods, they will be given a button pressing task where the press a button when they see pictures of the high-calorie or low-calorie foods. Immediately after each video game session participants will complete two cognitive measurement tasks. These tasks are (a) Stroop color-word task and (b) auditory verbal learning test. The Stroop color-word test requires the participants to read words typed in different colors on a sheet of paper and to say the name of the color of ink the words are printed in (ie to say "blue" when the word "red" is printed in blue ink). The auditory verbal learning test will require the researchers to read a list of 15 words and have participants repeat as many of the words back to the researcher as possible. This will be repeated 6 times. After the 5th time, there will be a 30 minute waiting period before the 6th trial where participants will be allowed to eat ad libitum pre-weighed foods while they wait to complete the last trial of the verbal learning test.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is an endoscopic minimally invasive weight loss procedure where a commercially available, FDA approved, full-thickness endoscopic suturing device (Overstitch; Apollo Endosurgery, Austin, TX) is used to reduce the stomach volume by 80% through the creation of a restrictive endoscopic sleeve. This is accomplished by a series of endoscopically placed full-thickness sutures through the gastric wall, extending from the antrum to the gastroesophageal junction. Up to 200 participants at 9 locations in the United States will participate in this study. The ESG procedure has been performed clinically since 2013 in the United States. The investigators are completing this study to compare how effective the ESG is for achieving long-term weight loss when compared to lifestyle modification only, as well as to evaluate the long-term safety and durability of the procedure and its impact on quality of life. Results of this research may help support having this procedure covered by health insurance plans for future patients.
This is a randomized controlled trial. The present study involves an acute and chronic intervention, which is a water-based exercise (one session: to acute intervention; 12-weeks of aquatic exercise program: to chronic intervention). The sample will be composed by elderly enrolled in university extension program titled "Hidroginastica na Terceira Idade" (Hydrogymnastics in aging). It will be evaluated the effects of water-based exercise on hemodynamics, self-reported sleep quality, depressive symptoms, quality of life, body composition, level of physical activity and functional capacity. The investigators hypothesized that an acute water-based exercise under different intensities promotes hemodynamics changes in elderly. In addition, the investigators hypothesized that 12-weeks of aquatic exercise may lead improvements in self-reported sleep quality, depressive symptoms, quality of life, body composition, level of physical activity and functional capacity in elderly.
This is a 2-year randomized controlled trial to test the effect of dietary carbohydrates, both quality and quantity, on changes in internal body fat mass. Up to 250 women and men with obesity are recruited in Bergen, Norway, and randomized to one of the following normo- and isocaloric dietary patterns (same amount of protein, polyunsaturated fatty acids and moderate energy, 2,000 - 2,500 kcal per day): 1) a low-fat high-carbohydrate diet primarily with refined (e.g., flour-based) carbohydrate sources, 2) a low-fat high-carbohydrate diet based on minimally refined (e.g., cellular) carbohydrate sources, and 3) a very-high-fat low-carbohydrate diet.
