Filter by:Open heart surgery requires the use of a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit. As blood flows across the artificial surfaces of the CPB circuit, platelets are activated and consumed. This activation results in a profound inflammatory reaction and need for transfusion. This reaction is intensified in younger, smaller patients undergoing longer, more complex open heart surgery. Nitric oxide is naturally released by vascular endothelial surfaces and acts as a signaling molecule which prevents platelet activation. The investigators hypothesize that the addition of the nitric oxide to the sweep gas of the oxygenator during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery will replace this natural endothelial function and thus prevent platelet activation and consumption. The investigators plan to test this hypothesis with a pilot double blinded, randomized trial of 40 patients less than a year of age undergoing cardiac surgery requiring CPB.
Effects of acute intermittent hypoxia on brain function imaging and systemic inflammation Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS) may have neurological cognitive impairment. The reason is not clear. Intermittent hypoxia is one of the main manifestations of OSAS. The investigators hypothesize that acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) can lead to abnormal metabolic activity in some regions of the brain, which may be associated with systemic inflammation. The investigators proposed in 12 to 15 cases of healthy volunteers, in the form of breathing in the nitrogen intermittently, were observed before and after AIH MRI diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) changes in brain regions and at the same time understand the inflammatory factors and the change of oxidative stress in the human body. The investigators look at the data from different brain regions of the brain DTI anisotropic score (FA), radial diffusion coefficient (RD), axial diffusion coefficient (AD) and peripheral blood interleukin-6 (IL - 6), interleukin-8 (IL - 8), interleukin-10(IL - 10), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), Leptin, high sensitivity reactive protein(hsCRP), Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 1(ICAM 1),Vascular cell adhesion protein 1(VCAM-1) , E-selectin, endothelin-1(ET - 1), 8-iso-PGF2α,3-nitrotyrosine(3-NT),hypoxia-inducible factor 1α(HIF 1α). Statistical data processing includes: the matching t test of the above indicators before and after AIH; The relationship between DTI and peripheral blood inflammatory factors was analyzed by single factor. Using DTI as the dependent variable, the peripheral blood inflammatory factor was analyzed by multifactor correlation. Ultimately, the effect of AIH on the brain's regional functions will be understood, and whether the effect is related to systemic inflammation.
The study will examine the use and impact of a meditation app delivered to adult workforce populations facing extreme time demands. Enrollees will be randomized to either app or a wait-list group, and will be assessed in terms of job and daily functioning, well-being, and biomarkers of immune function and stress physiology, and neural structure and function prior to randomization and again at multiple time points after participants commence app engagement. In order to assess efficacy, we will examine the longitudinal changes in all measures in both the mindfulness group, compared to wait-list control group.
This pilot study will examine the benefit of this amino acid based hydration solution in patients with IBD who have undergone a total colectomy and have either ileostomies or jpouches. Findings from this study and possible future studies could have broad implications for patients with malabsorption resulting from many underlying conditions, including IBD.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of different dietary zinc intakes on fatty acid metabolism and other zinc biomarkers
This study will test whether chronic metformin administration will improve longevity of the cell, improves its machinery by reducing aging-related biochemical parameters and thereby improving physical performance, as measured by short physical performance battery test.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the mechanism behind the anti-atherogenic effects of liraglutide. In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel trial we will included 100 patients with type 2 diabetes. Patients will be randomized 1:1 to an active treatment period of 26 weeks or placebo for 26 weeks. The primary endpoint is change from baseline to week 26 in vascular inflammation, assessed by Flour Deoxy Glucose (FDG)-Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT)
Previous research shows that a diet high in fat has harmful effects on gut health. This increases the chance of developing obesity-related diseases (such as type 2 diabetes) and disrupts cognition and mood. Research has suggested that gut health can be improved by taking certain supplements, including resveratrol (a polyphenol found primarily in red grape skins). Resveratrol has also been shown to improve brain blood flow and possibly brain function - however, there is limited research studying this. This study will investigate the effects of 12 weeks daily consumption of resveratrol on cognitive function, cerebral blood flow, gut microbiota and systemic inflammation in overweight and obese healthy adults.
The study validates prospectively a new endoscopic scoring system (Gothenburg Intestinal Transplant Endoscopy Score, GITES) designed to summarize and stratify the abnormal ileal endoscopic findings after intestinal transplantation. GITES is a five-tier, four grade score which asseses mucosal friability, mucosal erythema and mucosal injury (ulcerations) as well as villous changes according to severity. These features (i.e., endoscopic descriptors) are also grouped from mild to very severe in the same sequence as observed during the progression of several pathologic conditions encountered after intestinal transplantation (acute rejection, infectious enteritis).
Purpose: To determine the efficacy of 1400 mg gamma tocopherol-enriched supplement for mitigating inhaled wood smoke particle-induced airway inflammation in healthy adults with no more than mild asthma.
