Filter by:The purpose of this study is to determine if supplementing healthy term infants delivered by C-section or vaginal delivery who only consume breastmilk with a probiotic for 21 consecutive days increases levels of bacteria in infants' stool.

Cardiovascular complications of NSAIDs, selective for inhibition of COX-2, stimulated interest in microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) as an alternative drug target. Global deletion of mPGES-1 in mice suppresses PGE2 and augments PGI2 by PGH2 substrate rediversion. Unlike COX-2 inhibition or gene deletion, mPGES-1 deletion does not cause a predisposition to thrombogenesis and hypertension. However, cell-specific deletion of mPGES-1 reveals that the predominant substrate rediversion product amongst the prostaglandins varies by cell type, complicating drug development. The research team has developed an ultra performance liquid chromatography/ tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) technique that allows the quantification of a wide range of lipids beyond the prostaglandin pathway (leukotrienes, anandamide and the 2-arachidonylglycerol cascades). This study is designed to examine different pathway interventions from the arachidonic acid cascade by anti-inflammatory compounds (with a focus on mPGES-1 inhibition) in whole human blood in vitro (Part A) and ex vivo (Part B). In Part B, healthy volunteers will be asked to take a single, therapeutic dose of celecoxib and blood and urine samples will be collected before and after drug administration. Collected blood will be stimulated ex vivo, and lipids and their metabolites will be measured in blood and urine, respectively. The investigators expect that lipid profile from ex vivo hWBA done on celecoxib-treated subjects will recapitulate findings from the in vitro hWBA received with celecoxib-treated human blood (Part A).
The investigators want to understand how oral processing (chewing) of nuts affects particle size and the presence of lipid (fat) on the cut surfaces. The main objective of the study is to: Measure the size of nut particles that have been chewed sufficiently to be swallowed. The secondary objective of this study is to: Measure any changes in lipid content due to chewing and compare it to a prediction from a theoretical model. The investigators have developed a theoretical model for determining the release of nutrients from plant foods, specifically lipid (fat) from almonds. The model has been used to calculate the amount of lipid released from chewed almonds. The model shows that only about 10% of the lipid is immediately released. The investigators require information on the particle size distribution (number of particles of each size) for other chewed nuts to calculate the amount of lipid released for other nuts. This will allow us to check the validity of our model for other foods.
The study was designed as a randomized 2-way cross-over study to assess the bioavailability of carotenoids and flavonoids from sweet oranges and orange juice. Volunteers followed a wash-out period for 2 weeks prior to eating either 400 g of fresh oranges or 719 g of orange juice. The amount of test food was adjusted to deliver an equal amount of β-cryptoxanthin (740 µg). After a consecutive wash-out period of 2 weeks, the procedure was repeated and the volunteers ingested the complementary test food. Blood samples were collected at 8 time points up to 9.5 h after test meal consumption. Additionally, 24 h-urine was collected to evaluate flavonoid recovery.
In this phase 1 pilot study, positron emission tomography (PET/CT) imaging will be used to determine the biodistribution, metabolism and excretion of a novel radiotracer [18F]Fluortriopride ([18F]FTP).
Monocentric pilot interventional study. The aim of the study is to assess clitoral doppler ultrasonographic parameters in a population of sexually healthy volunteer women in order to obtain reference values. Psychobiological correlates of female sexual function will also be studied through hormonal testing and psychological evaluation.
Lifestyle modifications that include a diet high in fibre may lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (CDA, 2013). In this context, the presence of soluble dietary fibre in carbohydrate rich foods has been widely recognized for its effect on post-prandial glucose response (PPGR). Among these, oat and barley derived β-glucan have received tremendous attention for their biological effects, including their ability to reduce PPGR in a wide variety of food matrices (Poppitt et al, 2007). A health claim for PPGR would increase market demand for food grade barley, and help those who want to limit the rise in blood sugar after a meal choose products to meet their goals, but there are several gaps in the literature that need to be filled before a submission to Health Canada can be successful: 1) test foods in appropriate serving sizes; 2) test both the glucose and insulin response; 3) include a reference product that matches in total fibre, macronutrient, and energy profile; 4) perform dose response. The proposed study design will address all of these gaps in the current literature and take into consideration Health Canada's guidance document for health claims related to the reduction in PPGR, which sets out the criteria by which the validity of such claims will be assessed. Hypothesis: Barley β-glucan will reduce the PPGR in healthy participants in a dose dependent manner. Specific objectives: 1. To determine the minimum and most effective dose of barley β-glucan in waffles on PPGR and insulin response in a cross-over, randomized, controlled clinical trial. 2. To assess the effect of barley β-glucan in waffles on appetite-related sensations using visual analog scales. 3. To demonstrate whether the test and reference products were liked or disliked similarly by participants. 4. To assess any gastrointestinal side effects from eating the test products
The primary objective of the study was to assess the gastric residence time (GRT) of the Soctec capsule after a standardized breakfast. 12 healthy subjects will undergo an initial screening visit. Eligible subjects will undergo the study procedure. The hypothesis is that the GRT of the Soctect Capsule after a standardized breakfast and lunch will be longer compared to literature values reported for a simliar sized capsule.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether DHA supplement (in a daily dose of 300 mg) will improve the cognitive performance, associated metabolism and growth in normal children aged 6-12 years in primary schools.
