A Multi-component Physical Activity Intervention for Adolescent Girls

A four-arm randomised pilot trial involving: 1. Physical activity programme only - live exercise sessions, social support, standardised text messages 2. Individual behaviour change support only - regular one-to-one video calls with an activity mentor 3. Combined - Physical activity provision and individual behaviour change support 4. Usual care control All groups will be provided with a menu of physical activities. Objectives. To conduct a RE-AIM evaluation of a 6-month multi-component PA intervention for adolescent girls, through investigating: - Who the intervention reaches, how representative they are for the population (Reach, Adoption) and who is most likely to benefit from the intervention (Reach); - The extent to which the intervention is delivered as intended (Implementation), and factors that affect this (Adoption); - Preliminary impact on participants' PA, sedentary behaviour, cardiovascular fitness and psychological wellbeing at 3, 6 and 12 months (Effectiveness, Maintenance); - The qualitatively examine the acceptability of the intervention for adolescent girls, and identify necessary refinements; - To gather data to inform a sample size calculation for a main trail

Microalgae Extract Phaeosol Combined to Exercise in Healthy Overweight Women : Efficacy on Body Weight Management

PhaoeSOL (Microphyt, Baillargues, France) is a microalgae-based nutritional ingredient developed with a patented production process that has New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) status from the FDA (#1120). It is an extract of the microalgae Phaeodactylum tricornutum standardized to 2.0% Fucoxanthin (FX) content by adding a food grade medium-chain triglyceride (MCT)-oil and a tocopherol-rich (Vitamin E) extract (0.5 % w:w). PhaeoSOL is intended for use as a source of the naturally occurring carotenoid, fucoxanthin, in food supplement products for the general population at levels not to exceed 437 mg/person/day for a maximal duration of 30 days of PhaeoSOL (equivalent to 10 mg fucoxanthin/person/day). Prior studies suggest that marine algae and Fucoxanthinol may have anti-obesity, lipid lowering, and glucose management enhancing properties. The purpose of this proof of concept pilot study is to examine whether dietary supplementation of PhaoeSOL enhances the benefits of women participating in an exercise and weight management program.

EFFECT OF FLOW RESTRICTION ON BONE QUALITY WITHIN A MULTICOMPONENT EXERCISE PROGRAM FOR OLDER WOMEN WITH OSTEOPOROSIS.

HYPOTHESIS: - A multicomponent exercise program where strength exercises are performed with blood flow restriction obtains better values in densitometry and bone mass of osteoporotic patients with respect to the same multicomponent exercise program where strength is worked without flow restriction. INTERVENTION: The recruitment of the population will be carried out between July and November 2021, with the collaboration of the Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa (CST), which brings together a hospital center and different primary care centers (CAP). The primary care physicians and rheumatologists of the CST will receive an e-mail from the hospital management, informing them of the study to be carried out so that, if they consider it appropriate, they can inform their patients. Intervention of the intervention and control group: Each volunteer will be assigned to an intervention group either to the control group (CG) or experimental group (EG). The control group and intervention group will receive the same multicomponent exercise program, based on specific literature for being an effective, safe and feasible training for both elderly people {{2091 Bouaziz, Walid 2016;}} {{2092 Fragala,M. S. 2019;}}, with or without frailty {{2093 Cadore, Eduardo L 2014;}} {{2094 Casas-Herrero, Alvaro 2019;}} {{2088 Fernández-García, Ángel Iván 2020;}} and/or with osteoporosis {{2089 Moradell, Ana 2020;}}. The main difference between both groups is that the experimental group (EG) will perform the strength exercises with flow restriction (BFR) while the control group (CG) will not have any restriction. The periodicity of both groups will be 2 sessions per week, with a duration of 65 minutes per session and the duration of the intervention of 6 months and a follow-up 12 months after the beginning of the intervention (see scheme). The training will be supervised at all times by a physiotherapist with more than 10 years of experience in multicomponent exercise. The sessions will include both limb and trunk work and will have a clear functional objective, focusing on activities of daily living (ADL). Each session will work on all the basic physical abilities (strength, balance, endurance, flexibility and coordination) and will be divided into: - 10 minutes of initial warm-up. This is divided into 8 minutes walking on a treadmill or cyclohergometer with an intensity corresponding to 30% of heart rate reserve. Followed by 2 minutes of active mobilizations in both upper and lower extremities. - 20 minutes of strength exercises. These will be interspersed with the rest of the exercises and will include the different extremities and trunk. During the first month, training will be carried out with loads corresponding to 20% of 1 repetition maximum (RM) and from the second month onwards it will be increased to 30-35% of 1 RM. - 10 minutes of resistance exercises. These exercises will be interspersed with the rest to make the session much more enjoyable. - 10 minutes of coordination and balance exercises. These exercises will be interspersed with the rest of the activities. - 5 minutes of flexibility. These exercises will be performed interspersed with the strength and endurance exercises. - 5 minutes of return to calm and relaxation. To facilitate the monitoring of the researcher who will apply the intervention, each group will be subdivided into smaller groups (ratio of 5 subjects per researcher).

Physical activity has been described by the US federal government as a 'best buy' for public health. Unfortunately, most adults in the United States are not sufficiently active, and this worsens with age. Low levels of participation are driven by many challenging barriers, including lack of access, few opportunities for enjoyable activity, and few supportive social relationships, which is especially important given the central role of social connection for lasting behavior change. A half-century of research in behavioral sciences has generated effective group-based physical activity programs, but these are inaccessible to most as they are often delivered in a few select research centers. Recent advances in telehealth have offered media for extending these interventions more broadly, but the experience of such programs is often hampered by technology that does not allow for a sense of physical and social presence. Fortunately, uptake of virtual reality (VR) is increasing rapidly, and the medium has a high level of potential for advancing the delivery of immersive evidence-based group interventions to those that most need it. Thus our specific aims are: Specific aim 1: To test the feasibility and acceptability of a group-mediated physical activity intervention delivered fully via modern VR to older adults. Specific aim 2: To examine the impact of this program on overall physical activity among older adults compared to the current standard-of-care for telehealth: the video conference meeting platform.

Conmigo: A Mother-daughter Intervention to Promote Physical Activity

Regular physical activity (PA) contributes to reduced risk of obesity, chronic disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, and can improve emotional and mental health, learning, productivity, and social skills. Latina girls are less likely to meet guidelines for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) than non-Hispanic white girls; factors that contribute to low PA rates among Latina girls include sex role expectations, low PA competency, few active role models, lack of parental support for PA, and lack of access to resources. The goal of this study, informed by social cognitive theory and family systems theory, is to design, implement, and evaluate an intervention promoting physical activity among Latina pre-adolescent girls (aged 8-11) and their mothers. The intervention is based on evidence suggesting that parent-child interventions and single-sex interventions are more effective at improving PA. Mothers and daughters will participate in a 12-week virtual intervention where they will engage in weekly 1.5-hour sessions that incorporate didactic teaching, skill-building, interactive discussions, and PA. Each session will include at least 30 minutes of PA. The intervention will be compared with a control condition that will receive an abbreviated version of the intervention following completion of all measurement points. Ninety mother-daughter dyads will be randomly assigned to the intervention or the wait-list control condition. The primary aim is to determine whether the intervention will increase MVPA among Latina girls in the intervention condition relative to those in the control condition. The investigators hypothesize that daughters participating in Conmigo will have higher minutes of MVPA at M2 and M3 compared to girls in the delayed treatment control condition.
