The Joint Effect of Air Pollution and Exercise on Cognitive Function

A double-blind randomized controlled trial design is used in this study. A mixed design of 2 (pollution reduction group vs. no pollution reduction group) × 3 (high intensity intermittent exercise [HIIT], moderate intensity of aerobic exercise [MICT] and control group [CONT]) is used. 93 subjects recruited by advertising will be randomly divided into 6 groups: high intensity exercise group (pollution reduction vs no pollution reduction), moderate intensity aerobic exercise group (pollution reduction vs no pollution reduction) and Stretching group (Control) (pollution reduction vs no pollution reduction).

Companion: Sensor-based Two-way Communication for Physical Activity in Older Adults

This pilot study is a small sample (N=46) 16-week clinical trial with a follow-up after 24-weeks among sedentary adults >60 y with a BMI >25 kg/m2 to tests the impact of a hybrid artificial intelligence behavior change system (Companion) on physical activity. Participants will be randomized to a control and intervention group. All participants will engage in a proven supervised exercise program from week 1 to 16. Only the intervention group will receive Companion from week 1 to 16.

HIIT and MICT on Nitric Oxide-mediated Erythrocyte Rheology

Erythrocyte rheological properties affect blood viscoelasticity and consequently regulate vascular resistance to flow shear force, whereas rheological impairments of erythrocytes may result in circulatory disorders. The aim of this study was to establish an effective exercise strategy for improving individual aerobic capacity and for simultaneously ameliorating the risk of hemorheological dysfunction evoked by a graded exercise test (GXT) and the hypotheses is exercise intervention will improved hemorheological functions by enhancing deformability of erythrocytes via NO-mediated mechanism. This study included 60 healthy sedentary mens (age 20~30) from Chang Gung university than were randomized into the HIIT [3-min intervals at 40% and 80% V̇O2 reserve (V̇O2R),n=10] and MICT(sustained 60% V̇O2R,n=10)on a bicycle ergometer for 30min·d-1, 5 d·wk-1 for 6 wk.

The Effect of Semi-recumbent Position With Exercise Training on Long-term Ventilator-dependent Patients

Prolonged mechanical ventilation patients rely on medical expenses per year had increased by nearly 20 billion in 15 years, so it is worthwhile to explore how to improve the respiratory function and even their quality of life of patients in Respiratory care wards (RCWs). This study used repeated experimental measurements and purpose sampling, and the investigators invited patients in respiratory care ward in northern Taiwan. They were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group was given 45 degree Semi-sitting 2 hrs and upper-limb exercise training 10 mins once a day. There were 29 prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) patients in the experimental group and 26 in the control group. Our conclusions showed that PMV patients can significantly improve the maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) in the post-test while performed a 45-degree semi-sitting position with upper limb training for 4 weeks. The minute ventilation (MV) has a trend of increasing month by month in the experimental group, but it is necessary to consider whether it is due to the improvement of lung function or just cause of the increased oxygen consumption and accelerated respiratory rate, so it can not be inferred to improvement of the patient's condition or lung function.

Impact of Pilates on Running Mechanics

INTRODUCTION: Core strengthening, balance, and flexibility programs such as Pilates have been advocated to affect running mechanics and prevent lower extremity injuries positively. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a 12-week mat-based Pilates exercise program on dynamic knee valgus alignment in runners. METHODS: Thirty-four young male and female adults performed a running protocol at baseline. The protocol consisted of the participants running on a treadmill at a constant five miles per hour (mph) for four minutes. Post-examination, participants were randomly assigned to a Pilates or control group (n=16 and n=18, respectively). A certified Pilates instructor gave the Pilates group a 12-week home-based program. To ensure participants in the Pilates group performed exercises correctly, the Pilates instructor conducted the first session, and provided feedback to each participant. Participants in both groups performed the same running testing protocol every four weeks. Knee valgus was measured as the medial displacement of the knee joint center during the running stance phase. Repeated measures Analysis of Variance (RepANOVA) was calculated at baseline and 4-, 8-, and 12-weeks post examinations to compare knee valgus during running.
