The Contribution of Melatonin Vs. Placebo in Benzodiazepine Withdrawal in Methadone Maintenance Treatment Patients

We hypothesized that patient will success in benzodiazepine withdrawal if they get melatonin to solve sleep-problems which commonly occur during benzodiazepine withdrawal. Former heroin addicts, currently in Methadone maintenance treatment, who are also abusing benzodiazepine, started self benzodiazepine withdrawal, and got for 6 weeks melatonin (5mg/day, taken every night) or placebo and after 1 week, additional 6 weeks with placebo or melatonin (double blind for what got first).Success The benzodiazepine withdrawal success was evaluated by urine for benzodiazepines, and sleep quality was evaluated using PSQI questionnaire (baseline,and after weeks 6, 7, 13)

Growing evidence supports the notion that Late-onset Dysthymic disorder in middle aged men may be associated with age-related HPG hypofunctioning. In this study we seek to examine the efficacy of Testosterone replacement for this condition. Hypothesis: Testosterone replacement will be more effective than placebo, in treating men with late onset Dysthymic Disorder and hypo-gonadism.

Aspirin was proved to be the drug preventing vein grafts from closure and improving clinical outcome after coronary artery bypass surgery. Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX), as an anti plaque agent, is commonly used with a variety of products. In this study we, the investigators at Hadassah Medical Organization, intend to examine the efficacy of a single dip in CHX of provisional restoration prior to oral cementation. If the protocol is effective, we intend to calibrate it and recommend clinical use of the protocol. The examination of biofilm formation will be both with electron microscope and confocal scanning laser microscope.

Monitoring Brain Activity in Human Brain Injury

The outcome of brain injury (physical or stroke) may be related to a brain electrical phenomenon known as Cortical Spreading Depression (CSD). This is a brief cessation of function in a local region of brain tissue. It has been hypothesized that CSD may occur after brain injury and may expand the damage to adjacent brain areas. Our aim is to detect CSD by means of intracranial electrodes in patients with brain injuries and asses how these events alter the outcome of the patients.

Use of SV40 Vectors to Treat Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)

Chronic myeloid leukemia is a serious disease which is characterized by progression from relatively quiescent stages of the disease to an aggressive phase. Although now there is highly successful medical therapy known as Gleevec (Imatinib), the treatment is not always successful and patients do develop resistance. Those patients have limited treatment options. We are developing a gene therapy model of treatment for this disease using pseudoviral particles to insert molecules of genetic material which would not allow the harmful genes causing the leukemia to function.
