A new artificial lung device has been developed that potentially provides added support to mechanical ventilation for severely damaged lungs. The Hattler Respiratory Assist Catheter is designed to provide gas exchange (deliver oxygen and remove carbon dioxide) for a period of up to 7 days, providing more time for the lungs to improve. Extrapolating from large animal data, the hypothesis is that the Hattler Catheter will be capable of providing 30% to 40% of the basal requirements of carbon dioxide exchange in a manner that is dependable and reproducible.
Many people in the UK have ischaemic heart disease. Insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle means that it functions inefficiently, and leads to symptoms of shortness of breath, chest pain and excess fluid in the body. Recently it has been shown that cells from the inside of bone are able to produce many different cell types. We are investigating a new treatment in which a patient's bone marrow cells are taken, and injected into the heart in an attempt to produce new blood vessels and heart muscle cells. This may lead to a new treatment for ischaemic heart disease.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of carrying out a full scale randomised controlled trial to compare the effects of giving additional information versus no additional information to patients prior to their first oncology appointment. Hypothesis: Patients with some awareness of research provided prior to clinic appointment in oncology and aware of the possibility of being invited to take part in a clinical trial are more likely to agree to participate.
The principle objective of the trial is to compare rosiglitazone to gliclazide in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic stable angina to see how the subjects' angina status changes. Angina status will be measured via exercise tolerance testing, 24-hour ECG testing and angina quality of life questionnaire.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD for short) involves inflammation inside the air passages of the lungs. This inflammation might be partly responsible for the shortness of breath, cough and susceptibility to chest infections that form part of COPD. Inflammation is caused, in part, by white blood cells that are attracted from the blood into the air passages. Once inside the air passages, the white blood cells may change (or 'differentiate') and release substances that produce inflammation and attract more white cells. The hypothesis is that the lifespan of these cells may also be prolonged such that they produce more inflammatory mediators and in turn perpetuate inflammation. The cycle of inflammation may damage the lungs, so we want to see what mediators are released by white blood cells and determine if we can inhibit this effect with existing and new drugs. We would also like to see the effect of these drugs on the life-span and function of white blood cells. We will compare the behaviour and characteristics of white cells with those from healthy smokers and healthy non-smokers to find out if there is anything different about cells from COPD patients.

The aim of this study is to investigate the mechanisms whereby lung function is decreased in asthma and sensitivity to treatment. The hypothesis is that in diseases such as asthma, inflammatory cells (leukocytes) including eosinophils, macrophages and lymphocytes migrate to the lung and release either more or different types of inflammatory mediators and/or receptors compared to subjects without asthma, which are corticoid sensitive or insensitive. The objective of the study is to identify which genes are specifically expressed in important cells in patients with asthma with a view to identify novel targets for drug therapy.
The primary aim of this study is to exploit a difference between COPD patients, chronic smokers without COPD and healthy non-smoking subjects. This will help to assess the utility of inflammatory and oxidative markers in exhaled air and sputum and to compare them with the lung function, clinical parameters and computerised tomography (CT).
