A Multicenter Collaborative Study on the Clinical Features, Expression Profiling, and Quality of Life of Infantile Onset FSHD

This study is an observational study that aims to advance our knowledge on infantile onset FSHD. The study will include 50 participants of all ages who have presented with symptoms of FSHD between birth and 10 years of age. Study participation will involve a single day of assessments at one of the participating CINRG centers (to include physical exam, cognitive testing, eye exam, hearing test, strength testing and speech evaluations). The procedures may be split over additional days for scheduling purposes.

To Compare Safety and the General Imaging Pattern of Cyclotron Produced Technetium vs. Generator Produced Technetium in Patients With Thyroid Cancer

The cyclotron production model of Tc-99m pertechnetate (CPERT) has received significant validation in the independent expert review conducted by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) in the follow up to the Chalk River crisis. The University of Alberta's Edmonton PET Centre and the Edmonton Radiopharmaceutical Centre is a cyclotron / radiopharmacy unit, providing a safe, cost effective, unsubsidized, and reliable supply of radiopharmaceuticals to hospitals and clinics in Edmonton and northern Alberta. A Phase I study is proposed to show safety of CPERT as well as comparability with generator-produced Tc-99m pertechnetate (GPERT) in subjects with well differentiated thyroid carcinoma post-thyroidectomy and prior to planned I-131 Iodide treatment.

Efficacy and Safety Study of SPD489 in Combination With an Antidepressant in the Treatment of Adults With Major Depressive Disorder

This study will examine SPD489 in subjects aged 18-65 with major depressive disorder (MDD) who are taking certain types of antidepressants but continue to have residual depression symptoms. Eligible patients will remain on their antidepressant but will be randomized to either receive supplemental SPD489 or placebo (i.e. sugar pill). The purpose of this study is to help answer the following questions: - How safe is SPD489 for the supplemental treatment of depression and what are the side effects that might be related to it? - Can supplemental SPD489 help patients who still have residual depression symptoms while taking an antidepressant? - How much SPD489 should be given to patients with depression who are also taking an antidepressant? - How does SPD489 compare to placebo in depressed patients who are also taking an antidepressant?

Bioavailability of Amoxicillin Dissolved in Human Milk

The investigators propose to study amoxicillin absorption in a 2-stage program that will progressively produce, for the first time, information leading to pediatric pharmacology recommendations for the administration to children of amoxicillin dissolved in human milk. The investigators study will enroll adult volunteers as number of blood extractions, volume of blood required and subject availability, among other issues, generate a number of ethical and logistical constraints that make it almost impossible to carry such an intensive sampling study in infants.

Thromboembolic complications (TCs) are important causes of morbidity and mortality after pediatric cardiac surgery, resulting in longer hospital stay, increased risk of early and late post-surgical complications, early reoperation, neurologic and organ damage, and potentially death. The true incidence of blood clots in pediatric surgical patients is unknown. The overarching objective of this study is to further our understanding of TCs, including quantification, characterization and risk stratification. This study will ultimately allow the development of effective tools for prevention and early identification of TCs, rather than focusing on treatment alone.
