There are about 28871 clinical studies being (or have been) conducted in Canada. The country of the clinical trial is determined by the location of where the clinical research is being studied. Most studies are often held in multiple locations & countries.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the 24-hour spirometry effect (FEV1) of Fluticasone Furoate/Vilanterol Inhalation Powder 100/25mcg once daily compared with tiotropium bromide inhalation powder 18mcg once daily over a 12-week treatment period in subjects with COPD who have or are at risk for co-morbid cardiovascular disease
The purpose of this study is to find out what effects a new drug AT7519M has on chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
This study is designed to test the immunogenicity in terms of Hemagglutination Inhibition (HI) antibodies against each of the three vaccine influenza strains and reactogenicity and safety of Fluviral® containing the influenza strains recommended for the 2012-2013 season.
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of TRx0237 in the treatment of patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD).
Perineal trauma is common during vaginal birth. The discomfort this causes can interfere with a woman's recovery and early motherhood.Mothers are offered a standard treatment after childbirth, water soaked frozen peri pads (ice packs), to alleviate the discomfort. However, a Cochrane review questions the efficacy of ice packs treatment. An alternative treatment that may be more comfortable and effective for women is warm water soaked black tea bags. Medicinal use of black tea bags has been based on their astringent (shrinking or constricting) properties and have been used for various medical applications. The investigators will conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) of 40 pregnant mothers randomized to either intervention group (tea bags; n=20) or control group (ice packs; n=20). The goal of this pilot is to test the feasibility of a larger RCT by assessing recruitment, testing the protocol, and evaluating a proposed primary outcome objective of analgesic use during hospitalization as an indicator of pain. The investigators expect this pilot study to demonstrate feasibility for a large scale RCT to formally evaluate the efficacy of black tea bags to reduce perineal pain in this patient population.
Many studies have shown that those with coronary artery disease (CAD) have a more rapid decline in memory than expected and that they are at an increased risk of developing dementia. It is not understood how memory decline is linked to CAD; however, it has recently been discovered that certain byproducts of fat breakdown involved in the development of CAD, called ceramides, can harm brain cells. In the present study the investigators will recruit 129 CAD patients from a cardiac rehabilitation facility and measure memory performance and blood ceramide concentrations at baseline, 3 months and 6 months. The investigators will also measure important blood messengers of inflammation and assess whether they are associated with ceramide production. In addition, relationships between ceramides and other aspects of brain function, such as thinking speed and the ability to plan and sort information will be explored.
The study hypothesis is that individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D), who adhere to the PANDA intervention, will have improved compliance with the nutritional therapy recommendations of the Canadian Diabetes Association. Specific objectives of this proposal: The objectives of the investigators PANDA (Physical Activity and Nutrition for Diabetes in Alberta) are to (a) to devise and evaluate the efficacy of a multi-level, practical, nutrition intervention program that promotes the individual factors required for effective self-management practices AND that explicitly incorporate strategies to improve food availability, accessibility and acceptability and (b) to use these interventions as a means to examine the relationships between food availability, accessibility, acceptability, adherence to Nutrition Therapy Guidelines, and metabolic indicators of diabetes control in people with type 2 diabetes.
This study will evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of sofosbuvir (SOF; GS-7977) in combination with ribavirin (RBV) with or without pegylated interferon (Peg-IFN) in adults with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection who participated in a prior Gilead HCV study and have not achieved sustained virologic response (SVR).
The purpose of this study is to investigate the safety and efficacy of different doses and schedules of AZD5363, when in combination with paclitaxel, in treatment of patients with advanced or metastatic breast cancer. Also to investigate a selected dose and schedule of AZD5363 in combination with paclitaxel vs. paclitaxel in combination with placebo in treatment of patients with estrogen receptor-positive advanced or metastatic breast cancer, including a subgroup who have the phosphoinositide-3-kinase, catalytic, alpha polypeptide (PIK3CA) tumour mutation.
Nutrition is key to healthy aging for a number of diseases but the investigators have reported imbalances in the distribution of long chain omega-3 fatty acids (LC-omega-3) in the elderly and in the carriers of apolipoprotein E epsilon 4 (APOE4) isoform. Carrying APOE4 isoform is currently recognized as being the most important genetic risk factor of cognitive decline. The investigators believe that dysregulation of LC-omega-3 metabolism is intimately link with higher risk of cognitive decline. The current project will investigate whether there is a causal relationship between LC-omega-3-enriched diet and cognition using, on the one hand, a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled design and on the other hand, transgenic mice carrying human APOE4. In both study, the investigators will focus specifically on the distribution (level) of LC-omega-3 into lipoproteins with age and/or APOE4 isoform to evaluate whether dysfunctional transport of LC-omega-3 is associated with lower cognitive scores on visuospatial capacity, verbal fluency or working memory. In APOE4 mice, the investigators will evaluate LC-omega-3 brain uptake together with the level of LC-omega-3 in the brain membranes and the level of APOE protein within the brain. The present investigation will provide key basis for understanding how to develop nutritional strategies for healthy aging and the preservation of cognitive function.
