Social Contextual Influences on Physical Activity

Vitamin D and Omega-3 Trial (VITAL)

The VITamin D and OmegA-3 TriaL (VITAL) is a randomized clinical trial in 25,871 U.S. men and women investigating whether taking daily dietary supplements of vitamin D3 (2000 IU) or omega-3 fatty acids (Omacor® fish oil, 1 gram) reduces the risk of developing cancer, heart disease, and stroke in people who do not have a prior history of these illnesses. The 5-year intervention phase (study pill-taking, median 5.3 years) has ended; post-intervention observational follow-up of study participants is ongoing.

Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly

ASPREE-XT is a post-treatment, longitudinal observational follow-up study of ASPREE participants [ASPREE Investigator Group, 2013; www.aspree.org; McNeil et al 2017]. Although the ASPREE trial medication was ceased, the study activity was not stopped and ASPREE participants are continuing with scheduled visits and phone calls. An observational follow-up phase (ASPREE-XT), began in January, 2018. This will enable the monitoring of possible delayed effects of aspirin treatment, primarily on cancer incidence, metastases and mortality. In addition to monitoring the incidence of malignancy within the ASPREE cohort, the opportunity will be taken to observe any other residual effects of aspirin on the endpoints being monitored in the cohort. Continuity of contact with study participants is the key to retention of the cohort for any ongoing or future studies.

Motivational Interviewing for Physical Activity

The goal of this behavioral research study is to learn why some African American (AA) women choose not to exercise often and to learn if teaching African American women how to support the exercise habits of a partner will increase their physical activity and help them to stay more active over time. The primary goal of the proposed intervention is: Aim 1: To conduct formative research using semi-structured in-depth interviews and focus groups with sedentary AA women to investigate the role and importance of social support for PA; Aim 2: To determine the feasibility of recruiting and implementing "Culturally Appropriate Physical Activity Motivational Interviewing" (CAPMI) intervention in sedentary AA women; Aim 3: To pilot test and evaluate the efficacy of the CAPMI in increasing PA, social support, self-efficacy and reducing barriers to Physical Activity (PA) at post-intervention compared to an attention control group.

The investigators propose to establish a Biorepository of both diseased and normal tissue collected from subjects undergoing surgery for solid tumor resection. In cooperation with the Scripps Cancer registry, the investigators will also establish an anonymized database of corresponding clinical information including response to treatment, disease status, and recurrence. The Biorepository for Scripps Health will be able to process, preserve, and distribute samples to scientific and medical researchers at Scripps.

Safety and Activity Study of Intrathecally Administered Ziconotide for Neuropathic Pain in Patients With Cancer

Cancer Patients' Knowledge About Fatigue

Background: Result from an earlier study I carried out in the late 1990 showed that cancer patients were overall well informed about diagnoses, prognoses, symptoms, treatment, side-effects of treatment e.g. pain, nausea and vomiting and hair loss. Their knowledge about fatigue as a side -effect to cancer and cancer treatment was however different. Patients had minimal knowledge about fatigue and they were not prepared for this side-effect and as a result of this they did not know how to handle fatigue and fatigue was seen as a very frightening experience. As a result of the findings I wanted to carry out an intervention study, where the aims were to develop an educational programme about fatigue and to evaluate the effect of the programme. Purpose: The purpose of the project is to develop and describe a structured educational programme. The structured educational programme will serve as the intervention. The purpose is also to evaluate whether or not the structured educational programme increase the cancer patients knowledge about cancer related fatigue and to find out if increased knowledge about cancer related fatigue ease the experience of cancer related fatigue. Another purpose of the study is to investigate the connection between fatigue and other symptoms and to find out how other symptoms influence the patients experience of fatigue. The study will consist of 3 stages. - Development of structured educational programme - Implementation of structured educational programme - Evaluation of the effect of the structured educational programme Materials and methods: The study is a randomised experimental design. An intervention group and a control group, each consisting of 100 Breast Cancer patients (Stadium I or II) receiving chemotherapy or/and radiation therapy after surgery are included in the study. On a NR-scale (0-10) the patients had a fatigue score of 2,5 or more to be included in the study. The intervention is an educational package of 120 minutes x 3 over three weeks. The intervention is given in groups of 10 patients. Both groups are responding to questionnaires just before the intervention, just after the intervention and three months after finishing the intervention. The educational package consisted of basic knowledge about fatigue, and strategies or techniques for coping with fatigue.

Cancer Patients Diagnosed With Unsuspected Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) on Routine Computed Tomography (CT) Scans

This is a prospective study with the following objectives: Primary Objective: 1. To estimate the prevalence of unsuspected VTE in oncology patients on routine staging CT scans of the thorax, abdomen and pelvis. Secondary Objectives: 2. To identify symptoms commonly associated with VTE that are present in cancer patients undergoing routine staging CT scans with findings of unsuspected VTE. 3. To identify the risk factors and demographic characteristics in outpatient cancer patients associated with the development of unsuspected VTE. 4. To determine the incidence of recurrence of new VTE in patients with unsuspected VTE at 3 and 6 months of follow-up.

The National Oncologic PET Registry

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), as the Federal agency that administers the Medicare program, only pays for positron emission tomography (PET) scans in patients with cancer for certain reasons and for certain types of cancer. This study was developed to help CMS determine if they should pay for PET scans for additional reasons and additional types of cancer. In order to collect the information needed to decide which other types of cancer should be covered by Medicare, CMS will provide payment for the otherwise non-covered PET scans of patients who are properly registered with the National Oncologic PET Registry (NOPR). This information will then be analyzed to determine the effect PET scans had on the way physicians planned to treat their patients.
