Filter by:The Objective is to determine if renal hypothermia during open partial nephrectomy results in improved post-operative renal function compared to warm ischemia. Primary Aim is to determine the effect of hypothermia on preservation of overall renal function compared to no hypothermia in patients who require hilar vessel clamping during open partial nephrectomy for a renal tumor. Hypothesis: Hypothermia will result in improved post-operative preservation of overall renal function. Secondary Aim is to determine the effect of hypothermia on preservation of affected renal function (kidney with the tumor) compared to no hypothermia in patients who require hilar vessel clamping during open partial nephrectomy for a renal tumor. Hypothesis: Hypothermia will result in improved post-operative preservation of affected renal function.
The goal of this research study is to learn how cultural, environmental, and interpersonal experiences, as well as personal thoughts and feelings, influence cancer risk behaviors among Latino residents of Houston, Texas.
For people with cancer, in-person Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) participation can decrease stress symptoms, mood disturbance, and fatigue, as well as enhance personal growth and spirituality, and improve quality of life and sleep. Online MBSR may improve the accessibility of MBSR programs to underserved cancer patients who are unable to attend available in-person groups. This study will examine whether patients are willing to participate and complete the program, and also whether the online program improves mood and stress.
Young adult cancer survivors constitute an under served population to whom fertility potential is particularly important. For female young adult patients, cancer treatment such as alkylating chemotherapy are toxic to the finite number of eggs they have, resulting in risks of infertility and premature menopause related to ovarian failure. Reproductive issues are a major concern for young cancer survivors, but one that is understudied. Young cancer survivors have few tools to measure post-treatment ovarian reserve, or the quantity and quality of remaining eggs4. Accurate determination of ovarian reserve and fertility potential would not only be an important research tool, but also directly impact clinical management. The purpose of this study is to test if basal and provocative ovarian reserve testing can predict return of menses in female young adult cancer survivors, to compare basal and provocative ovarian reserve testing results between female young adult cancer survivors and healthy controls, and to compare basal and provocative ovarian reserve testing results between female young adult cancer survivors on and off of combined estrogen and progesterone hormone products. Participants will be asked to keep track of their periods over three months. If a participant is taking birth control pills, patches, or vaginal ring, they will asked to come off the birth control for 3 months. Participants will also be asked to undergo ovarian reserve testing by blood draws and pelvic ultrasounds at the start and end of the 3 months.
The investigators want to achieve the goal of diagnosis in early phase, accurate treatment and existence for a long period in order to screen in early phase, diagnose in clinical trial, choose treatment and evaluate prognosis of cancers by establishing molecular pathology tools.
The goal of this research study is to learn if a motivation and problem solving (MAPS) program can help improve diet and levels of physical activity in African Americans who are overweight.
Background: - There has been little research on the long-term health effects from oil spills, even though at least 10 percent of all oil tanker spills between 1970 and 2009 have affected coastal populations. The Deepwater Horizon disaster, with its release of approximately 5 million barrels (~680,000 tons) of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, is far larger than any of the individual tanker spills. Given the magnitude of this spill and the scope of the potential exposures, including the 55,000 workers involved in clean-up efforts and countless residents of the affected areas, researchers are interested in monitoring Gulf clean-up workers to understand the adverse consequences of oil spills in general. - The Gulf Long-term Follow-up Study will investigate health effects associated with the clean-up activities following the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010. More than 100,000 persons completed safety training in preparation for participation in clean-up activities related to the spill. Many of these individuals participated in active clean-up efforts, but others did not. Exposures among persons involved in clean-up range from negligible to potentially significant, especially for workers involved in tasks associated with direct exposure to crude or burning oil, or to chemical dispersants. However, prediction of adverse health effects is not possible because the long-term human health consequences of oil spills are largely unknown. In addition to the oil itself, the widespread economic and lifestyle disruption caused by the oil spill may contribute to mental health problems among this population. Objectives: - To investigate potential short- and long-term health effects associated with clean-up activities and exposures surrounding the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Eligibility: - English-, Spanish-, and Vietnamese-speaking workers and volunteers at least 21 years of age engaged or potentially engaged in oil spill clean-up operations in the Gulf of Mexico, or who lived in affected areas (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida coastal regions). Design: - Participants will be divided into groups of those who performed oil-spill clean-up-related work ( exposed ) and those who did not engage in clean-up-related work ( unexposed controls). - Participants will be screened with a full medical history and physical examination, as well as an interview to determine the nature of their potential exposure. - Participants will provide blood, hair, toenail, urine, and saliva (spit) samples. Participants may also have a lung function exam. - Participants will have researchers collect dust from their homes by using wipes and special vacuum bags. - Participants will also provide detailed contact information, including their Social Security number, to be contacted in the future for long-term health follow-up appointments. These appointments will include 30-minute telephone interviews every 2 years....
Patients with advanced cancer often have numerous physical and psychological symptoms, which can negatively affect their quality of life. A palliative care team of different health care professionals (including doctors, nurses, social workers and therapists) specializes in treating these symptoms and offers support for patients and their families. However, palliative care teams are currently involved only in the last two months of a patient's life or not at all. The main purpose of this study is to determine whether, compared to conventional cancer care, early involvement by a specialized symptom control and palliative care team in patients with advanced cancer will be associated with: better quality of life, greater patient and caregiver satisfaction with care, better symptom control, improved communication with healthcare providers and improved caregiver quality of life.
This an an open-label study to define the safety profile and the maximum tolerated dose and confirm the clinical effective dose of palifosfamide-tris given intravenously in combination with etoposide and carboplatin in a wide range of cancers which etoposide and carboplatin are normally given. Once the maximum dose of palifosfamide-tris is determined,a Phase II study using the 3 agents combined will begin.
The clinical use of genetic testing is expanding and, as a result, the number of variants identified in patients is growing. Knowledge of the clinical impact of these variants improves over time. However, the combination of more testing and the rapid evolution of genetic knowledge make it impossible for clinicians to fully account for the latest implications of their patients' genetic profiles as patient care decisions are made. This proposed study plans to enhance and evaluate IT infrastructure developed to provide timely genetic variant updates and patient search functionality to clinicians to assist in optimizing patient care.
