Effects of Morningness on Night Split Shift Performance

The goal is to investigate if the morningness-eveningness dimension mediates sleep and function on spilt night shifts (midnight-4am and 4am-8am). Does those with high score of morningness function relatively better on the last compared to the first split shift? Participants will: Record their sleep from 2 days prior to 2 days following the split shift During the shifts complete questionnaires assessing mood, sleepiness and perceived performance as well as complete cognitive tests: Psychomotor vigilance test, digit symbol substitution test, working memory scanning test, reversal learning test, and visual search test

RATIONALE: Immunotherapy uses different ways to stimulate the immune system and stop cancer cells from growing. Immunotherapy biological extracts may be useful as adjuvant therapy in treating patients who have had surgery for breast cancer, colon cancer, or melanoma. PURPOSE: Phase III trial to study the effectiveness of Corynebacterium granulosum extract as maintenance immunotherapy following surgery in treating patients with breast cancer, colon cancer, or melanoma.

Randomized Trial of Beta-Carotene and Macular Degeneration

To determine whether 50 mg of beta-carotene taken every other day reduces the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD) among male U.S. physicians who were aged 40 to 84 in 1982. To investigate the possible relationship of AMD with other antioxidants, including selenium and vitamins A, C, and E. To identify potential risk factors for development of AMD. Possible risk factors include height, systemic hypertension, cardiovascular disease, blood cholesterol, cigarette smoking, iris and skin color, sunlight exposure, body mass index, diabetes, and alcohol intake.

Etoposide, Carboplatin, and Bleomycin in Treating Young Patients Undergoing Surgery For Malignant Germ Cell Tumors

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as etoposide, carboplatin, and bleomycin, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more tumor cells. Giving chemotherapy drugs before surgery may make the tumor smaller and reduce the amount of normal tissue that needs to be removed. Giving combination chemotherapy after surgery may kill any tumor cells that remain. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying how well giving etoposide, carboplatin, and bleomycin works in treating young patients undergoing surgery for malignant germ cell tumors.

Molecular Studies and Clinical Correlations in Human Prostatic Disease

The Genitourinary Oncology/Urology Services at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) participates in research for the control, treatment, and cure of cancer. The purpose of this study is to collect normal and cancerous tissues, in addition to blood, and other body fluid samples from men with prostate cancer or prostatic disease. These samples may be stored for future use or used immediately by researchers who study prostate cancer and try to find better ways to diagnose, prevent, and treat it. We will look for genetic changes and protein markers on these cells. We hope to learn more about what makes some people get prostate cancer, why some cancers are more aggressive than others, and why some cancers respond to or resist different treatments. We may also try to grow the tumor cells in the lab. We may find a new treatment for prostate cancer based on this research.
