A Study of ABT-751 in Patients With Recurrent Breast Cancer After Taxane (Taxol or Taxotere) Therapy.

The purpose of the study is to determine if ABT-751 will decrease tumors, and determine how long the tumor shrinkage can be maintained in patients with breast cancer after having had taxol or taxotere. RATIONALE: Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage cancer cells. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining chemotherapy with autologous stem cell transplantation or autologous bone marrow transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well eight different high-dose chemotherapy regimens with or without total-body irradiation followed by autologous stem cell transplantation or autologous bone marrow transplantation works in treating patients with hematologic malignancies or solid tumors.

Monoclonal Antibody Compared With Zoledronate in Treating Women With Breast Cancer and Bone Metastases

RATIONALE: Monoclonal antibodies can locate tumor cells and either kill them or deliver tumor-killing substances to them without harming normal cells. Zoledronate may prevent bone loss and stop the growth of tumor cells in bone. It is not yet known whether monoclonal antibody is more effective than zoledronate in treating women who have breast cancer and bone metastases. PURPOSE: Randomized phase I/II trial to compare the effectiveness of monoclonal antibody with that of zoledronate in treating women who have breast cancer and bone metastases.
