Severe traumatic brain injury with a decrease in cerebral oximetry is associated with multiple impaired systemic microcirculations, more morbidities, and a higher mortality rate. When using the brain as an index organ, interventions to improve brain oxygen delivery may have systemic benefits for these patients.
This was a multicenter randomized controlled study of 98 severe Traumatic Brain Injury patients with tracheostomy. Patients enrolled were divided randomly into the observation group with Intermittent Oro-esophageal Tube Feeding (n=50) or the control group with Nasogastric tube feeding (n=48) for enteral nutrition support, respectively. Nutritional status, complications, decannulation of tracheostomy tubes and level of consciousness on day 1 and day 28 were recorded and compared.
This study aimed to assess the longitudinal changes in triceps surae muscle-tendon architecture to an ultra distance trail running. Experienced trail runners (N=55, 78% men, age: 45.2 [13.5] years) participated in a 156-km trail run (6000m climbing) consisting in six 26-km laps. The resting architectural properties of triceps surae muscle-tendon were measured using ultrasound imaging for Achille tendon cross-sectional area (AT CSA), medial gastrocnemius muscle pennation angle, thickness, length and fiber length. Measurements were performed the day before the race (Baseline), at 52-km (T1), at 104-km (T2), at 156-km (T3) and 12 hours after the race (H12).
The authors aimed to determine the risk factors associated with postoperative acute kidney injury in patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty.
The goal of this open-label, post-market clinical follow-up study is to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of HealiAid Collagen Wound Dressing in patients classified into different types of wounds: venous ulcers, bedsores, diabetic foot wounds and burn wounds. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. The wound healing which was defined as the percentage of area change. 2. The duration of wound healing. 3. The granulation tissue growth of the wound. 4. The wound exudate. 5. Safety Indicators of which incidences after treatment. HealiAid will be applied to eligible subjects who will later be followed up for 12 weeks.
A prospective cohort study with 9 months follow up was carried out in 2017-2018. Boxers of both sexes 18 years and older from all 7 boxing clubs in Iceland were invited to participate in the study. Participants filled out a questionnaire on previous injuries during boxing training and competition and were evaluated on the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 3rd edition (SCAT3). Exposure at training and competition was measured and any injuries sustained during the study period were recorded via text messages and phone calls every 2 weeks.
Background: For thirty years, a major shift in the management of liver trauma has been seen. Contained hepatic vascular injuries (CHVI), including pseudo aneurysms and arteriovenous fistula, are often feared due to their risk of secondary bleeding. Nonetheless, knowledge of CHVI is scarce and no guidelines on their management have been set. The investigators aimed to validate the risk factors of CHVI, identify associated morbidities, and establish a management protocol. Study Design: A retrospective study on 318 liver trauma from a level 1 trauma center over the last 15 years, comparing the presence or not of CHVI. Univarious and multivarious analyses were performed. A comparison of the management of CHVI was also performed.
The goal of this study is to determine if ibuprofen prior to exercise in the heat worsens biomarkers of acute kidney injury. Participants were given 600mg of ibuprofen or placebo (corn starch) 12- and 1-hour prior to running for 1-hour in a hot environment (35°C) at moderate intensity. Urine, plasma, and serum samples were collected pre-, post-, and 1hour post-exercise to assess biomarkers of acute kidney injury. This was a double blind, randomized crossover design, so that participants completed the alternate trial (ibuprofen or placebo) at least seven days later.
Different approaches are used to reduce post-operative complications associated with the palatal wound site after free gingival graft (FGG) harvesting. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of L-PRF and A-PRF on palatal wound healing after free gingival graft harvesting and patients' quality of life.
