Validity of an App to Detect Frailty and Sarcopenia Syndromes in Elderly

Frailty and sarcopenia are two age-related syndromes which can result in adverse health-related events. The combination of both is more predictive of mortality than either condition alone. These conditions can be reversed through an early detection and appropriate interventions. Nevertheless, scientific community highlights the lack of cheap, portable, rapid and easy-to-use tools for detecting frailty and sarcopenia in combination. The aim of this study is to validate an iPhone App to detect frailty and sarcopenia syndromes in community dwelling older adults. This is a protocol study of a retrospective diagnostic test accuracy study which will include at least 400 participants older than 60 years recruited from elderly social centers of Murcia city. Researchers will recollect data of health status, dependency, cognitive status, and functional capacity of the participants. The index test will consist in the measurement of muscle power exerted during a single Sit-to-stand through an App (iPhone), combined with calf and mid-upper arm circumference. The reference standard will be frailty syndrome and sarcopenia assessed according to Fried's phenotype and to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2) (2019) recommendations, respectively. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive values, and area under the curve will be reported.

The Effect of Nutrition Education on Premenstrual Syndrome

The aim of our study is to examine the effect of nutritional education given to university students with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) on premenstrual symptom severity, nutrient intake and anthropometric measures. Our hypothesis is that nutrition education reduces symptoms in students with PMS. The effect of nutrition education on premenstrual syndrome was evaluated. The sample for this study included 83 female students, with 43 in the experimental and 40 in the control group, who were studying at the health sciences faculty of a state university and met the inclusion criteria. Experimental and control groups were formed by randomized method. Nutrition training was given to the experimental group. Participant data were collected before and four months after nutrition training. The data were collected with the personal information form, Premenstrual Syndrome Scale and food consumption record form. Nutrient amounts were determined in the Nutrition Information System (BEBÄ°S) program.

Impact of a Conservative Treatment in the Waiting List for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery.

STC is considered one of the most prevalent peripheral neuropathy of the upper quadrant. Systematic review shows that conservative treatment is effective for treatment of CTS. In Spain, most patients diagnosed by CTS are included in surgery list without considering conservative treatment as first option or providing drugs or night splint . However, surgical treatment is not always necessary for these patients, and waiting list delays can lead to aggravation of patients' symptoms. Researches believe that performing a conservative treatment including diacutaneous fibrolysis on carpal tunnel syndrome patients, could reduce waiting surgery list, reduce the cost-effectiveness rate of the surgical process and improve patient's satisfaction and clinical findings. In addition, patients of any level of severity and with systemic pathology will be included to define which patients would benefit from surgical treatment and which from physiotherapeutic treatment. The aim is to find out the impact of a multimodal physiotherapy treatment in patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) on the patient and the Aragonese Health System. A randomized controlled clinical trial will be performed. First a pilot study will be carried out. Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome included on waiting surgery list of Miguel Servet Hospital will be recruited. They will be randomized into a control group (staying in waiting list and performing healthcare standard) and into an experimental group (3 sessions of 45 min of diacutaneous fibrolysis and homebased treatment). Different outcomes will be assessed at pre-treatment, at the end of treatment, 3 and 6 months later.
