Microbiota and Symptom Distress in Head and Neck Cancer Patients Receiving Radiotherapy

The investigators plan to conduct a 3-year pioneering care research project for mucositis in cancer patients. These include: (1) an analysis of the incidence and severity of mucositis, severity, treatment methods, and treatment costs; (2) an RCT comparing the effectiveness of honey, Taiwan green propolis, and usual care in mucositis of cancer patients; (3) monitoring of related symptom changes using a smart bracelet device; (4) a measurement of IL-1, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF, Microbiota in saliva, Microbiota in stool and (4) modeling of the trend of mucositis for alertness and search of essential parameters of the complications.

COVID-19 And Lingering Symptoms In Primary Care Patients

The ongoing corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral acute respiratory tract infection caused by server acute respiratory syndrom coronavirus typ 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The signs and symptom of SARS-CoV-2 infection vary and most people with COVID-19 experience illness of mild or moderate severity and recover with symptomatic treatment outside of hospital. Studies have found that some people experience lingering/long-lasting symptoms and only a minority of patients were completely free from COVID-19 related symptoms after two months. About one third still had up to two residual symptoms and 55% had three or more. As far as we know no study on lingering symptoms has been published in patients after a mild or moderate infection managed in primary care settings. The aim of this study is to explore the course of disease over a one year period and describe lingering symptoms and their impact on well-being and daily activities in adult non-hospitalized patients with previous established COVID-19 infection.

Mobile App for Symptoms Monitoring in Cancer Patients: a Pilot Study

With the growing number of cancer survivors, challenges to deal with comorbidities and impacted quality of life of cancer survivors by the disease and treatments also surge. Symptoms and Adverse Events are common and insufficiently monitored in real time / real life, which leads to increased symptom burden, treatment delays and unplanned hospital admissions. Remote monitoring apps have been shown to improve quality of life, symptom control and survival in published clinical trials, but no data with such interventions exists on the Portuguese population. We will conduct a pilot study to explore the feasibility of a mobile app for remote symptom monitoring in cancer patients. Patients will be recruited in Portuguese hospitals and will be invited to test the app for one month. Patient experience and satisfaction will be assessed via a weekly survey. The results of this pilot study will inform subsequent randomized clinical trials to test safety and efficacy of remote monitoring and lifestyle interventions to improve symptoms control and quality of life.

Introduction: Person-centred care is based on the assumption that every person has resources that should be used in the care situation. In order for this to happen the patient has to be able to effectively communicate his/her symptoms. This protocol describes the analysis of a digital picture-based tool for communication support for children with cancer aged 5-17 years, who undergo high-dose methotrexate treatment. The advantage of a non-linguistic based platform, beside the expected clinical outcomes, is that it can be used in multiple national studies with minimal translation. Methods and analysis: Two studies will be conducted in a hybrid design, i.e., a crossover design will be used for the intervention (effects), and a mixed-methods design will be used for the process evaluation. Qualitative interviews will be carried out with children with cancer, their legal guardians and case-related healthcare professionals as part of the process evaluation. The interviews will address the experiences of the intervention and frequency of use from the child's perspective. Interview transcripts will be analyzed qualitative descriptively. The digital communication tool will collect child self-reports of symptoms/emotions. The children will be monitored for biomarkers of stress and pain (neuropeptides, neurosteroids and peripheral steroids) in venous blood samples, in-app estimation levels for the children, drug consumption. Person-centeredness will be evaluated with the questionnaire Visual CARE Measure. Ethics: Ethical approval was obtained from the Swedish Ethical Review Authority (ref 2019-02392; 2020-02601).

The objective of this project is to identify effective strategies to help patients with lung cancer manage side effects and achieve optimal adherence to oral targeted therapies. To achieve this objective, we will evaluate the effect of a novel, bidirectional conversational agent, compared to usual care, on adherence to oral targeted therapies using a two-arm randomized controlled trial, and explore how multilevel factors impact the acceptability and effectiveness of this strategy by collecting qualitative and quantitative data from clinicians and patients.
