Filter by:This clinical trial aims to investigate the effects of a 70-day consumption of cranberry juice on cognitive and motor accuracy, mental and physiological stress, and stress response in healthy men and women between the ages of 30 and 55 who engage in multitasking. The trial will utilize a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled design. It is worth noting that studies have shown that over half of middle-aged Americans experience stress, which can lead to cognitive decline and depression. Previous clinical trials have indicated that consuming polyphenol-rich foods can have positive effects on cognitive function in humans. However, no study to date has examined the long-term effects of cranberry juice consumption on cognitive performance, mental stress, and stress response specifically in individuals engaged in multitasking. Based on this gap in knowledge, the investigators hypothesize the following: (1) chronic consumption of cranberry juice will improve cognitive and motor accuracy, as well as mental and psychological stress responses in young adults subjected to intense multitasking. (2) cranberry juice consumption will alleviate the negative consequences of frequent intense multitasking, such as fatigue, mood fluctuations, cognitive impairment, and memory issues. Additionally, it is expected to have a positive impact on stress biomarkers and neurotransmitter levels. By conducting this clinical trial, the investigators aim to shed light on the potential benefits of cranberry juice consumption in improving cognitive performance, mitigating mental stress, and positively influencing stress responses in individuals who engage in intense multitasking.
The investigators will test the efficacy of our proposed intervention to reduce embodied stress in four racial/ethnic groups (Black, Latinx, Pilipinx, and Pacific Islander) as a preventative intervention for health disparities found in these communities. The intervention is comprised of two phases. The first consists of community nature walks in a pristine redwood forest for six months. This is followed by chosen nature activities with family and/or friends for three months. The investigators will test the ability of these activities in nature to reduce chronic stress that underpins many health disparities using validated biological, behavioral, and sociocultural measures. The use of these measures is in alignment with the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Research Framework, and will increase understanding of individual, interpersonal, community, and social level factors that lead to, and that can eliminate health disparities.
The incidence of burnout and mental ill-health begins very early in medical school and continues to be high throughout training. Medical students are under high amounts of stress, which often becomes chronic, and can lead to both physical and psychological issues as a student, resident, and physician. Chronic stress and burnout in medical students are not a new phenomenon, but recent research has highlighted the worsening mental health of medical students, with as high as three-quarters of students reporting mental ill-health. It is vital that ways are found to reduce burnout and assist in improving the mental health of medical students. This quasi-experimental study is an ongoing study which is enrolling cohorts of students as they enter medical school.
This study examines cardiovascular responses to a brief psychological challenge under laboratory conditions among adult volunteers. The study volunteers are asked to complete two study sessions. In one session, the volunteers are asked to provide demographic and health-related information via questionnaires and an interview. In that session, volunteers would then be asked to undergo evaluations of their body composition, blood pressure, heart rate, and other signs of cardiovascular function and health. Lastly, volunteers would be asked to take part in a brief and challenging psychological task after a period of rest while cardiovascular activity is measured. In the other session, volunteers are asked to undergo magnetic resonance imaging and to complete neuropsychological tests of memory, attention, and processing speed. In addition to these two sessions, volunteers are asked to complete online questionnaires. The study is designed to examine associations between transient changes in cardiovascular activity induced by the psychological task, measures of overall cardiovascular health, and measures of cerebrovascular health measured by magnetic resonance imaging. Study results are expected to provide new information about the relationships between cardiovascular activity changes to psychological challenges and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health in adults.
The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the feasibility of remote time-restricted eating (TRE) and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) interventions and the preliminary effect on EOCRC-related markers. The main question[s] it aims to answer are: - Is it feasible and acceptable to conduct 8-week remote interventions of TRE, MBSR, and combined TRE+MBSR among young adults with excess adiposity and moderate-to-severe perceived stress? - Will participants in the combined group lose more body weight and reduce their stress levels than those in the remaining groups? - Will participants in the combined group experience better body composition changes and improve their cardiometabolic health compared to those in the remaining groups? - Will participants in the combined group exhibit changes in the microbiome compared to those in the remaining groups? Participants will: - Complete 8 weeks of a TRE intervention - Complete 8 weeks of a remote MBSR intervention Researchers will compare 1. TRE alone; 2. MBSR alone; 3. TRE + MBSR; and 4. Control to see if the study is feasible and acceptable; to see if individuals lose body weight; to see if individual stress levels reduce; to see changes in the microbiome.
The goal of this cross-sectional study was to explore the relationship between physical and psychological stress and the quality of bowel preparation before a colonoscopy examination, in order to improve the quality of bowel preparation. The main questions it aims to answer are: Does physical and psychological stress affect the quality of colonoscopic bowel preparation, and delay disease detection? How can we improve the quality of colonoscopy? Participants will be asked to complete a questionnaire containing their demographics, history of diseases and drugs, lifestyle habits, and physical and 14-item perceived stress scale(PSS-14). Quality of bowel preparation was assessed by the Boston bowel preparation scale(BPS).
Older South Asian family caregivers experience elevated psychological stress and limited physical activity (PA) due to caregiving responsibilities and additional factors such as lack of access to services, cultural/linguistic barriers, stigma and discrimination. South Asian family caregivers are especially underserved and are a growing ethnic group in the US. Both PA and cognitive training (CT) have shown to improve cognitive function in older adults who experience cognitive function decline because of psychological stress. However, there are no studies using this approach for this population. We propose a randomized control trial pilot study to address this gap. Driven by a Community Advisory Committee (CAC) we will develop this 12-week mindful walking intervention using a participatory research methodology in partnership with UIC's Cognition Behavior and Mindfulness Clinic that combines the PA of walking and the CT through mindfulness. We will recruit fifty participants and will randomly and equally assign 25 people to the intervention and 25 people to the control group. The intervention will include: 1) a mindful walking training followed by 2) a prescribed mindful walking regimen, 3) self-reporting of adherence to regimen by the participants using activity logbooks and use of a user-friendly PA tracker (Fitbit) for daily step count, and 4) personalized text messages with reminders and motivational messages for participants to do the mindful walking as prescribed including a weekly check-in call or text message for accountability. The primary aim of the proposed pilot study is to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the protocol and intervention implementation. A secondary aim will evaluate the intervention to examine preliminary efficacy in reduction of psychological stress, improvement in cognitive function, increase in physical activity, and increased self-efficacy (self-efficacy for coping with stress, self-efficacy for physical activity, and overall self-efficacy). The findings of this pilot project will provide evidence-based data to support a larger scale study proposal for future funding such as the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) field initiative award, or the National Institute of Health (NIH) Research Project Grant (R21 NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Award) award, especially National Institute on Aging (NIA) grants.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate a new, community-based, group intervention called FIESTA (Familias Inmigrantes Empoderándose contra eStrés Tomando Acción) to understand how well it helps Latinx immigrant families deal with the impact of stress due to structural racism. Structural racism is defined as the policies, practices, and norms that work together to limit equal opportunities for minority communities. For Latinx immigrant families, this can include fears of deportation, lack of bilingual providers, and discrimination. These experiences of structural racism can turn into stress, which impacts well-being and mental health. Researchers will investigate if: 1) FIESTA lowers stress and mental health symptoms (anxiety/depression) and increases feelings of empowerment, improved knowledge of resources, better parent-youth relationship quality, and higher use of healthy coping skills; and 2) FIESTA is feasible (easy to carry out), acceptable (agreeable or satisfactory), and appropriate (relevant to the needs of Latinx families). FIESTA is ten-sessions and will be led by two community health workers. Researchers will enroll 35 parent-adolescent dyads (35 study-eligible parents and 35 study-eligible youth) in the initial study. This study will randomize parent-youth dyads to the treatment arm or waitlist-control arm using block randomization. In other words, participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups, the First Group, or the Second Group. The First Group will begin immediately, and the Second Group will begin after three months. Data will be collected at baseline and three- and six-month post-baseline.
The goal of this clinical trial is to compare the effect and time consumption of the Swedish translation of the protocol for RNT-ACT with the internet administrated self-help treatment with therapist support (iCBT) for patients seeking medical care for depression, anxiety or stress at their primary care unit. The trial consists of a feasibility study and a randomized controlled trial with 3- and 12-month follow ups.
The study aims to investigate how slow breathing with prolonged exhalation (i.e., ProlEx breathing) modulates decision-making under risk in healthy participants. To do this, a short-term breathing intervention is combined with a decision-making paradigm while neural, physiological, and behavioral data are recorded.
