Filter by:Drug use, substance use disorders (SUD) and other addictive behaviors are problems of enormous socio-health impact that still require a great research effort to improve the diagnostic and therapeutic procedures used in healthcare practice. Since addictive behaviors have been consistently associated with the presence of alterations in cognitive and executive functions, it is necessary to be able to detect, evaluate and have specific therapies for these dysfunctions and investigate, among other issues, the role they play in the onset and course evolutionary. After implementing neuropsychological evaluation techniques for diagnostic improvement, addresses the search for procedures that allow working on cognitive and executive deficits, as a specific therapeutic target. To characterize the presence of alterations in the domains that make up social cognition (SC) in patients with SUD and test in our healthcare units the ET® program already tested both experimentally and at beta level. It is an online self-training program for CS rehabilitation that includes modules for emotion recognition (RE), Theory of Mind (ToM) and attributional style (AS). To replicate the RCT carried out in schizophrenia in patients with SUD with difficulties in RE or ToM, in addition to searching for a biomarker or a pattern of them that predict the patient profile that will benefit from the training, using advanced LC-ESI proteomics techniques. MS/MS in saliva since previous studies in a population with schizophrenia, subjected to different neurorehabilitation therapies. It is also intended to subsequently improve the instrument (ET®) through the implementation of big data analysis and machine learning and the introduction of automated user management. At this level, the objective is to determine, after the first games, the type of game and the intensity required to improve the user's performance until it reaches normality. From the perspective of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation, this project combines CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH, based on the evidence of scientific and technological knowledge, and the use of ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES of e-health in the area of Health Services. Playful interactions have an important role in human sociality. During playful interactions, two individuals continuously co-create an imaginary world together, such as playing roles in an imaginary scene or co-creating synchronized movements together. Playful interactions are characterized by an enhanced sense of flow and joy and have been associated with physical and psychological well-being across the lifespan. This research team and others have shown that playful interactions are particularly beneficial for the older population, which are at higher risk of cognitive decline and social isolation. The overarching aim of this proposal is to conduct an in-depth investigation of the effects of playful interactions, in older population. Specifically the investigators will test the effect of short playful interaction on cognitive measures, as well as social and affective indices, and compare them to a non-playful interaction (such exercise class, or personal conversation).
The goal of this field trial was to compare in emale-headed households. The main question it aims to answer are: determine the effect of education based on social cognitive theory on the social health of female-headed households in female-headed households in Gonabad. Women in the intervention group participated in face-to-face and virtual meetings based on social cognitive theory structures for 4 weeks. The control group did not receive any training related to the intervention.
The main goal of this single-arm pre-post intervention study is to see if an adapted mindfulness program can improve emotion regulation among youth aged 15-19 years who attend an alternative school. Participants will complete a baseline survey package using an iPad. They will then receive an adapted version of the 6-session Learning to BREATHE Program as part of a course they are taking at their school. Students will again complete a survey package within 2 weeks of completing the program. The investigator will compare baseline and post-intervention survey responses to see if the program improved emotion regulation, as well as several secondary psychosocial and behavioral outcomes.
To study the effects of MDMA, compared to a prototypical stimulant, on social motivation, social ability, and neural indices of social function in healthy volunteers
Rationale: Older African Americans undergoing surgery are a vulnerable and growing population at high risk for poor surgical outcomes and disparities. Few programs have focused on this population due to a fragmented understanding of the needs of this population. Objectives: While socioecological determinants of health (SEDOH) such as health literacy and socioeconomic status are known drivers of surgical disparities, an estimated 36-47% of surgical disparities remains unexplained. This gap results from limitations of current clinical datasets in capturing SEDOHs. This pilot study aims to fill this gap by (i) collecting granular SEDOH data, (ii) identifying barriers to surgical care for older African Americans, and (iii) establishing a multi-institutional clinical database through a socioecological context. These findings will help understand how SEDOHs drive surgical disparities and inform development of interventions to eliminate them in elderly African Americans. Design and Methods: Guided by the socioecological model of health, the investigators will use mixed-methods to achieve the objectives. First, the investigators will assess the acceptability and feasibility of a 58-item SEDOH survey based on the NIH PhenX toolkit. After distributing this survey to 36 elderly (≥65 years) African American patients undergoing surgery at 3 rural, UAB-affiliated hospitals (Alex-City, Greenville, Demopolis) the investigators will conduct detailed theory guided assessments of acceptability and feasibility (SA1). Second, the investigators will conduct key informant interviews of individuals from all 5 socioecological levels at each rural hospital (n=10) to identify additional barriers and facilitators to surgical care. The investigators will purposively sample 100% of participants at the patient and caregiver level (n=12) to be elderly African Americans (SA2). Finally, the investigators will link measured SEDOH data with standardized clinical data at each hospital to establish a novel database (SA3). These findings will establish a process to measure SEDOHs across the Deep South and set the foundation for a unique database to study surgical disparities. Significance: Development of effective multilevel interventions to eliminate surgical disparities in older African Americans is dependent on a clearer understanding of the contextual drivers of these disparities. This pilot study will accelerate understanding of these mechanism(s) through SEDOHs. It will establish a process to measure SEDOHs, identify additional barriers to surgical care not captured by NIH instruments, and build the database to study these relationships. Such findings will have the potential to impact vulnerable surgical populations in the Deep South and support the Deep South RCMAR mission to promote health and optimize health outcomes for older and rural African Americans.
The investigators will carry out a prospective, household cluster-randomized, implementation trial evaluating a complex, multi-component, social and behavioral intervention designed to normalize the acceptance of HIV testing in the household and increase diagnosis of HIV.
The percentage of hypertension among adults aged 18 is relatively high which is about 30% in Malaysia. Uncontrolled hypertension will increase the risk of diseases especially cardiovascular disease. However, adults still lack awareness about the importance of knowledge of hypertension. In between, online health information seeking and the use of social media to gather health information have been quite a norm among students. The wide use of this platform has been proven in various researches and studies. This study will be conducted among the undergraduate students in FMHS, UPM to look at the various socio-demographic factors associated with their level of knowledge on hypertension. Therefore, this may lead to a need to plan awareness programs on hypertension and to increase the knowledge of hypertension among health science students in the future. A cross-sectional study design will be done for this study. All undergraduate students in FMHS, UPM will be selected through simple random sampling. Online questionnaires will be given via the selected student email platform. However, there are limitations for this study where we only focus on the students of FMHS, UPM. Hence, the results of this study may be limited to them only. The causal relationship cannot be determined by this study design as well. The purpose of this study is to determine the social media use, online health information seeking practices with knowledge on hypertension among undergraduate students in FMHS, UPM, and its associated factors
The aim of the intervention proposed in the present study is to assess the effect of a cognitive stimulation (CS) intervention program in an individual and long-term format, for non-institutionalized elderly people with neurocognitive disorders and in a situation of social vulnerability. Specifically, to test the effectiveness of CS on the global cognitive state, on mood state, on quality of life and on functional state. The program will be composed by 50 sessions, including three of assessment sessions (pre, intra and post-intervention). Each session will have a duration of 45 minutes with a weekly frequency. Control group participants will maintain their treatment as usual.
People experiencing psychosis might find social interactions stressful and avoid them. This can result in isolation and can affect relationships, employment and quality of life. Improving social functioning is a really important aspect of recovery. Facing social situations after the first episode of psychosis can be very difficult and provoke intense anxiety. However, research has shown that the earlier intervention is offered, the better the outcome. Therefore, improving therapies for people experiencing their first episode of psychosis is a key target for research. Virtual Reality presents a unique opportunity to bring real-life-type environments into a therapy session to help people to overcome their distress in social situations and make them feel less anxious. Virtual Reality assisted Therapy (VRT) provides a 'safe space' to practice strategies and techniques to help people work towards improving their social functioning, build new ways of coping with stress and assist them in their recovery. The study uses a standard CBT model and integrates a Virtual Reality environment into it to support exposure and behavioural experiments for social difficulties, which are a key component of treatment.
