Filter by:Millions of U.S. parents have experienced trauma, putting them at risk for maladaptive parenting practices, which then confer vulnerabilities to their children. This study aims to enhance understanding of how parental emotional dysregulation associated with traumatic stress impedes effective parenting. The study employs neurophysiological methods (electroencephalogram; EEG) to address some of the challenges inherent in the study of emotion (particularly in trauma-exposed individuals) and to identify potential biomarkers of traumatic stress and response to intervention.
Becoming a parent is a life-changing event that can be both gratifying and stressful. As a parent, one is responsible for another person, where there sometimes is a need for new information, knowledge, and advice to live up to the new requirements that a changing family situation requires. The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate a new digital channel in child health care for support of parents in child health care issues with particular focus on eHealth literacy and satisfaction with care. An intervention is planned to run over eight months and will be evaluated in an intervention- and control group (from another health care centre) at baseline, 4 months and at 8 months follow-up. Data includes interviews and questionnaires about parental stress and eHealth literacy as well as satisfaction with care. Data will be analysed with qualitative and statistical methods. Expected outcomes is reduced parental stress and increased satisfaction with child health care.
The purpose of the study is to test the effects of the ezParent (web-based parent training program) intervention and telephone coaching calls (coach) on parent and child outcomes after 3-, 6-, and 12-months. Parents (n=220) will be randomized using a 2 x 2 factorial design to: (1) ezParent+coach, (2) ezParent, (3) Active Control+coach, or (4) Active control. The investigators will address these aims: 1. Determine the independent and combined effects of ezParent and coaching calls on parent outcomes. H1: The ezParent and ezParent+coach groups will report greater improvements in parenting skills and self-efficacy and reductions in harsh and negative discipline; and exhibit observed improvements in parent-child emotional connection vs. active control H2: There will be a synergistic effect of ezParent and coaching calls on parent outcomes such that ezParent+coach will provide greater benefit than the sum of the main effects of ezParent or coaching calls. 2. Determine the independent and combined effects of ezParent and coaching calls on child outcomes. H3: The ezParent and ezParent+coach groups will report greater reductions in child behavior problems vs. active control. H4: There will be a synergistic effect of ezParent and coaching calls on child outcomes such that ezParent+coach will provide greater benefit than the sum of the main effects of ezParent or coaching calls. 3. Determine differences in ezParent engagement with and without coaching calls. Engagement will be assessed by frequency (the number of times parents use the program), activity (proportion of material completed), and duration (amount of time parents use the program). H5: Relative to the ezParent only group, the ezParent+coach group will exhibit higher engagement with the ezParent.
Fathers play a unique role in the lives of children, with high quality interactions found to improve a child's executive functioning and general school achievement. Father involvement also has positive impacts on fathers themselves, with more involved fathers reporting more self-confidence in their parenting, more satisfaction with parenting, demonstration of more maturity, and reports of less psychosocial distress. However, poverty can have a negative association with fathers parenting and child outcomes, though paternal warmth can mediate this relationship. Children's Institute Inc will recruit and implement the 24/7 Dad program which is designed to provide a comprehensive evidenced-based fatherhood program that builds and strengthens father-child relationships. The curriculum for the primary workshops will be the 24/7 Dad curriculum, which addresses both the responsible parenting and healthy relationship areas in this project. A quasi-experimental interrupted time series (ITS) design allows for a continuous sequence of observations on a population, taken repeatedly over time.
Parents of Cerebral Palsy (CP) children participate in treatments, education services and general medical check-ups; They have many responsibilities such as the use of drugs, devices, educational materials. Therefore, involving parents of CP children in the rehabilitation process provides a stronger rehabilitation service for their children. In the studies, it was stated that the active participation of the parents in the physiotherapy and rehabilitation process increases the success rate of the treatment and the participation of the parents plays a key role for the success of the physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
Early exposure to poverty is associated with adverse impacts on long-term educational achievement. Support of positive parenting is a key strategy to prevent emergence of socioeconomic disparities in child development. This study will assess the feasibility of the pilot implementation of an evidence-based parenting program designed to prevent disparities in child development, the Video Interaction Project (VIP), in Brazil, as an exemplar low- and middle-income country (LMIC), and explore changes in parenting and child outcomes after participation in the program.
Opioid use is rising at unprecedented levels and has reached epidemic proportions in some areas of the country, particularly rural areas. Although research on the detrimental effects of opioid use on parenting and children is relatively new, it is clear that parents with opioid use struggle with a variety of parenting skills, especially contingent responsivity and warmth. As such, to have long-term sustained effects on preventing Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in parents and to help prevent substance use and related problem behaviors in the next generation, it is critical to prevent opioid use, opioid misuse, and OUD in new parents, in tandem with providing support for parenting skills. The Family Check-Up Online (FCU Online) focuses on supporting parents by increasing parenting self-efficacy, stress management skills, self-regulation skills, and sleep routines, which are hypothesized to lead to the prevention of opioid misuse and OUD as well as improve mental health and increase responsive parenting. The FCU Online is based on the Family Check-Up, which has been tested in more than 25 years of research, across multiple settings, and is an evidence-based program for reducing high-risk behavior, enhancing parenting skills, and preventing substance use through emerging adulthood. It is named in NIDA's "Principles of Substance Use Prevention for Early Childhood" as one of only three effective selective prevention programs for substance abuse among families with young children. The FCU has also been endorsed as an evidence-based practice by the Maternal Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program (MIECHV), and has been listed as a promising program by the Blueprints for Healthy Youth Development since 2013. The current project aims to address barriers of access to prevention services by delivering the FCU in a telehealth model using the FCU Online. In this research study the investigators will: 1. Work with community stakeholders in rural Oregon to expand the FCU Online to target early childhood (ages 18 months-5 years) and mothers with opioid misuse and addiction. Guided by focus group feedback, the FCU Online will be adapted to target parenting skills relevant to mothers with opioid misuse, including positive parenting, parent-child relationship building, executive functioning to help manage stress and depression, and negative parenting. A 2-month feasibility study (n=10) will test the adapted version of the FCU Online and help investigators refine intervention procedures and usability, recruitment steps, and assessment delivery. 2. Examine the efficacy of the FCU Online for rural families with opioid or other substance misuse. 400 parents with preschool children ages 18 months to 5 years and who have been identified with substance misuse, opioid misuse, or addiction will be randomly assigned to receive the FCU Online or services as usual and followed for one year. A telehealth model will be used for intervention delivery that includes targeted coaching and support. The investigators predicted that parents assigned to the FCU Online intervention will (a) show improvements in parenting skills linked to improvements in child behavior and long-term risk for subsequent substance abuse, and (b) show improvements in self-regulation and executive functioning (inhibitory control, attention shifting), which will mediate intervention effects. The investigators will also examine moderators, including neonatal abstinence syndrome/neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, and model intervention effects over time. 3. Examine factors related to successful uptake and implementation. To facilitate dissemination on a national scale, investigators will assess the feasibility of the FCU as an Internet-delivered intervention in rural communities with high levels of opioid use, including the extent to which participants engaged in the intervention, completed the program, and were satisfied with the program. Investigators will also assess feasibility, usage, fidelity, and uptake through engagement data collected via the online web portal. The investigators will develop materials and briefings for community agencies that will increase knowledge dissemination and, ultimately, reach a greater number of families throughout the United States who need information and services for parenting support in the context of opioid misuse.
This is a feasibility study with pilot randomized controlled trial design. A convenience sample of 60 intergenerational co-parenting family units, including 60 first-time parents (60 mothers and 60 fathers) and 60 grandmothers (mother-in-law of mothers) will be recruited from the obstetric clinics in the outpatient department of the study hospital, with 30 family units of each in the intervention group and control group respectively. Participants who are recruited will be randomly assigned to the intervention or control group by a research assistant based on the sequential enrollment list. Participants in the control group will receive usual care. Those who are randomized to the intervention group will receive the intergenerational co-parenting program in addition to the usual care.
It is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted families adversely in multiple ways, including economic stressors, mental health-related functioning, social/familial functioning, as well as responses to mandated safety measures (e.g. social distancing, stay-at-home orders, mask-wearing). Furthermore, families of school-age children have had to navigate online instruction and home schooling in the context of these difficult circumstances with little preparation for doing so effectively. School districts have varied widely in their ability to support parents during this crisis. These stressors are likely to have disproportionately adverse effects on lower-income and racial/ ethnic minority populations, for whom economic, academic, and family-level challenges were already pronounced. For instance, health effects of COVID-19 have hit African American and Latinx populations with disproportionate severity, including higher rates of hospitalization and death. Given the scale of pandemic impacts for families with school-aged children, the identification of effective family-focused interventions that target core mechanisms of change with a broad range of benefits for parents and youth across diverse populations, and that can be brought to scale rapidly and with fidelity, represent critical public health goals. In this research study the investigators will adapt and test the efficacy of the Family Check-Up Online as a treatment to foster resilient family functioning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The investigators will test the effects of the adapted FCU Online program on key mechanisms of change that are predicted to directly impact child and family functioning: parenting skills, parental depression, and parent and child self-regulation. The investigators predict that changes in these key targets of the intervention will impact participant's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including youth depression and behavior problems, the ability to cope with pandemic-focused stressors, and social/familial functioning.
Almost 1% of infants are born with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), an umbrella term referring to a range of anomalies in the heart's structure that are present at birth. Owing to significant medical advances, it is now estimated that more than 90% of persons born with CHD will reach adulthood. Children with CHD and their families' mental health outcomes need for psychosocial care. This study will intend to improve the psychological functioning of children, adolescents with CHD and their parents. The research will comprise of two major studies. The sample of first study will be based on a Cohort (From April 2021 to October 2021) of children, adolescent and their parents. Participants will be assessed for their psychological functioning and health related quality of life using Strength and Difficulty Questionnaire, pedsQL 3.0 cardiac module , Parental Stress Index , and 36-Item Short Form Survey. It is hypothesized that parental psychological functioning will mediate the relationship between psychological functioning of children and adolescent with CHD and their health related quality of life. It is also hypothesized that emotional behavioral issues of children and adolescents will moderate the link between parental psychological functioning and their quality of life. Illness parameters and sociodemographic correlates will serve as covariates in the study. This study will provide a baseline for the second study that is expected to use a randomized control trial of an intervention program based on training workshops derived from CHIP for the reduction in parental distress, emotional behavioral problem and improvement in health related quality of life among children, adolescent with CHD and their parents. The pretest-posttest design will be used. The randomized control trial will be conducted as per Consort Guidelines. A sub sample will be selected from the initial study using purposive sampling. Intervention study will include a subsample of CHD population (60 children and adolescents each) and their parents using purposive sampling technique. The participants will be randomly assigned to experimental & control groups. Illness related and demographic parameters will be distributed equally in both groups for establishing control. The intervention will be administered to experimental group only, while control group will receive regular treatment. Results of Pretest and posttest measures will be statistically analyzed. The designed intervention program (using problem solving therapy, psycho-education and Parenting the child with CHD training) will lower the level of parental stress in parents and emotional behavioral issues in CHD population. It will further increase the level of health related quality of life among children and adolescent with CHD and their parents. The research will incorporate psychosocial care with CHD population along with their regular treatment and thus improve their future health related outcomes in Pakistan.
