Filter by:IPSA (Improving Parenting Skills adult ADHD) is a new parent training (PT) program developed and adapted for parents who themselves have Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This study evaluates the efficacy of the IPSA program, that is, whether participation in IPSA is associated with desired treatment outcomes (e.g., improved parental self-efficacy). In addition, it examines the program's feasibility (e.g., what parents think about the program, the extent to which parents complete the program, and program safety). The study is a so called randomized controlled trial (RCT), where participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups: Treatment (IPSA) or Control (continued routine services; offered IPSA approximately six months later). Participants are adults with ADHD (any form) that have at least one child in the ages between 3 and 11 years. Data are primarily collected using questionnaires, completed by parents before and after IPSA, as well as in connection with an IPSA booster session (follow-up).
This study involves a long-term outcome study of the Catholic Health Initiative St. Joseph's Children (CHI SJC) program using a randomized control study. The purpose of this study is to determine the short-term and long-term impact and effectiveness of the CHI SJC program. The CHI SJC program has not been studied to determine program effectiveness. The investigators intend to follow families and their children until the children in the study graduate from high-school or turn 19 years of age. The study, as a template, uses the eight outcome domains listed and described in the Home Visiting Evidence of Effectiveness website (http://homvee.acf.hhs.gov/outcomes.aspx). These eight domains are: - Child development and school readiness - Family economic self-sufficiency - Maternal health - Reductions in child maltreatment - Child health - Linkages and referrals - Positive parenting practices - Reductions in juvenile delinquency, family violence, and crime The investigators expect to observe significant differences among the two groups with respect to the primary outcome domains listed. The investigators expect study group members randomized to the CHI SJC program will perform better on the eight outcome domains. Other hypotheses include: Other Hypotheses: Hypothesis 1. Randomization to CHI SJC will be associated with higher quality functioning and better child health and well-being. Hypothesis 2. Randomization to CHI SJC will result in more connections to community resources. Hypothesis 3. Randomization to CHI SJC will result in improved indications of maternal health and positive parenting practices. Hypothesis 4. Randomization to CHI SJC will be associated with higher measures of family economic self-sufficiency. Hypothesis 5. Randomization to CHI SJC will be associated with increased school readiness and school progress and attainment. Hypothesis 6. Randomization to CHI SJC will be associated with reductions in juvenile delinquency, family violence, and crime. The study will collect outcome data in the same way and, at the same time, from treatment and control group members. Data collection will primarily be comprised of a set of self-report questionnaires and a review of administrative records that target the outcome domains described earlier. Study group members will be assessed at baseline, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, 24 months, 3 years, 5 years, 8 years, 12 years, 15 years, and at high-school graduation or 19 years of age.
In Sierra Leone, poverty and challenges with family functioning can lead to family separation, and children may go to live on the street or enter residential care institutions/orphanages. Helping Children Worldwide (HCW), a non-profit organization with over 20 years of experience in Sierra Leone, has developed a two-part Family Strengthening Program delivered by their program partners in Sierra Leone, the Child Reintegration Centre, to improve families financial literacy and attachment between caregivers and children, with the ultimate goal of preventing family separation. The hypothesis of this study is that the Family Strengthening Program program is effective at (1) changing parenting behaviors, (2) improving emotional regulation, (3) improving caregiver-child attachment, and (4) improving financial literacy in dyads consisting of children ages 9-13 and their caregivers.
An intervention study to provide in-the-moment parenting tips with the goal of increasing healthy parent-child interactions leading to resiliency in high-risk children. Specifically, in a sample of parents participating in HV programs, the investigators will use a smartphone app (mHealth app) to deliver daily tailored messages with tips on monitoring and promoting child development. Daily assessments of parents' emotions, parenting behaviors, and interactions with their children will also be collected via the app. During the 4-week EMA study, parents will receive either 2 weeks of the mHealth intervention + EMA data collection followed by 2 weeks of only EMA data collection or to receive 2 weeks of only EMA data collection followed by 2 weeks of mHealth intervention + EMA data collection.
This study pilot tests a family wellness program that promotes academic and physical readiness for school among Latino dual language learners using a mixed methods and community engaged approach.
Millions of U.S. parents have experienced trauma, putting them at risk for maladaptive parenting practices, which then confer vulnerabilities to their children. This study aims to enhance understanding of how parental emotional dysregulation associated with traumatic stress impedes effective parenting. The study employs neurophysiological methods (electroencephalogram; EEG) to address some of the challenges inherent in the study of emotion (particularly in trauma-exposed individuals) and to identify potential biomarkers of traumatic stress and response to intervention.
Opioid use is rising at unprecedented levels and has reached epidemic proportions in some areas of the country, particularly rural areas. Although research on the detrimental effects of opioid use on parenting and children is relatively new, it is clear that parents with opioid use struggle with a variety of parenting skills, especially contingent responsivity and warmth. As such, to have long-term sustained effects on preventing Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in parents and to help prevent substance use and related problem behaviors in the next generation, it is critical to prevent opioid use, opioid misuse, and OUD in new parents, in tandem with providing support for parenting skills. The Family Check-Up Online (FCU Online) focuses on supporting parents by increasing parenting self-efficacy, stress management skills, self-regulation skills, and sleep routines, which are hypothesized to lead to the prevention of opioid misuse and OUD as well as improve mental health and increase responsive parenting. The FCU Online is based on the Family Check-Up, which has been tested in more than 25 years of research, across multiple settings, and is an evidence-based program for reducing high-risk behavior, enhancing parenting skills, and preventing substance use through emerging adulthood. It is named in NIDA's "Principles of Substance Use Prevention for Early Childhood" as one of only three effective selective prevention programs for substance abuse among families with young children. The FCU has also been endorsed as an evidence-based practice by the Maternal Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program (MIECHV), and has been listed as a promising program by the Blueprints for Healthy Youth Development since 2013. The current project aims to address barriers of access to prevention services by delivering the FCU in a telehealth model using the FCU Online. In this research study the investigators will: 1. Work with community stakeholders in rural Oregon to expand the FCU Online to target early childhood (ages 18 months-5 years) and mothers with opioid misuse and addiction. Guided by focus group feedback, the FCU Online will be adapted to target parenting skills relevant to mothers with opioid misuse, including positive parenting, parent-child relationship building, executive functioning to help manage stress and depression, and negative parenting. A 2-month feasibility study (n=10) will test the adapted version of the FCU Online and help investigators refine intervention procedures and usability, recruitment steps, and assessment delivery. 2. Examine the efficacy of the FCU Online for rural families with opioid or other substance misuse. 400 parents with preschool children ages 18 months to 5 years and who have been identified with substance misuse, opioid misuse, or addiction will be randomly assigned to receive the FCU Online or services as usual and followed for one year. A telehealth model will be used for intervention delivery that includes targeted coaching and support. The investigators predicted that parents assigned to the FCU Online intervention will (a) show improvements in parenting skills linked to improvements in child behavior and long-term risk for subsequent substance abuse, and (b) show improvements in self-regulation and executive functioning (inhibitory control, attention shifting), which will mediate intervention effects. The investigators will also examine moderators, including neonatal abstinence syndrome/neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, and model intervention effects over time. 3. Examine factors related to successful uptake and implementation. To facilitate dissemination on a national scale, investigators will assess the feasibility of the FCU as an Internet-delivered intervention in rural communities with high levels of opioid use, including the extent to which participants engaged in the intervention, completed the program, and were satisfied with the program. Investigators will also assess feasibility, usage, fidelity, and uptake through engagement data collected via the online web portal. The investigators will develop materials and briefings for community agencies that will increase knowledge dissemination and, ultimately, reach a greater number of families throughout the United States who need information and services for parenting support in the context of opioid misuse.
Purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and positive childhood experiences (PCEs) among parents enrolled in the Chicago Parent Program (ChiPP) in their child's school and whether those experiences are associated with a) parents' participation in ChiPP and b) program benefits for parents and children.
Prior to this pilot study, it is unclear whether comparing a manualized version of the Family Partner Model to standard practice in the Child Welfare Services would be feasible. Results will inform whether and how to design a fully powered randomized controlled trial to test the effects of a manualized version of the Family Partner Model on child maltreatment. The specific results of the pilot study will inform 1) randomization procedures, 2) data sources to be used, 3) sample size calculations, and 4) adaptations to the design and measures for a fully powered randomized controlled trial.
Maternal and early childhood home visits have been proposed as an effective strategy to improve the health and development of disadvantaged children. In South Korea (hereafter, Korea), a maternal and early childhood home visit program has been implemented since 2013 in Seoul, and then was adopted in 2019 by the central government as a national policy for child health and development. The Korea Early Childhood Home-visiting Intervention (KECHI) encompasses 25-29 home visits, group activities, and community service linkage by social workers from the prenatal period until the child reaches the age of 2 years; as such, it is a complex intervention involving various domains to address a wide range of outcomes. Each home visit is implemented based on the family's needs, and individualized interventions are provided to improve parenting and the home environment in order to promote children's health and development and maternal health. This study is a randomized controlled community trial conducted in Korea to examine the impact of targeted home visits led by nurses in the prenatal and early childhood period on children's health and development and maternal health. This study is a superiority trial with two parallel groups from pregnancy until the child reaches 2 years of age. Pregnant women with two or more risk factors will be recruited to participate in the study after they provide informed consent. Participants will then be randomly assigned to the intervention or control group with a 1:1 allocation through an independent web-based random allocation system. We expect a total of 800 families (400 families in each group) to be recruited. The intervention group will receive the KECHI program and the control group will receive existing maternal and child health services (usual care), but not multiple home visits by nurses. Both groups will receive gift cards of 30,000 Korean won (about 27 USD) for each round of surveys. The intervention and control groups will be surveyed on the outcome variables of home environment, child development, breastfeeding, maternal health, child hospital visits due to injuries, and community service linkage at four home visits by trained research nurses at baseline and at 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months after birth. Telephone contact will also be made at 6 weeks and 18 months after birth for both groups. Outcome measurements will be performed by research nurses and data management will be conducted by statistical analysts. The analysis will be conducted for the intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) groups, with an interim analysis of outcomes up to the 6-month follow-up. For the primary outcomes and certain secondary outcomes, subgroup analyses will be performed based on factors such as region, fertility status, number of risk factors, presence of depression, education level, etc.
