Effectiveness of Controlled-Release Morphine for Chronic Neuropathic Pain After Spinal Cord Injury

We would like to learn if a medicine called "modified-release morphine sulfate" (Avinza) helps reduce Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)-related pain that has lasted a long time. "Modified-release" means that the medicine in the capsules is slowly released to the body, instead of being released all at once. Avinza is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of pain, but we do not know how effective Avinza is in reducing SCI-related pain.

The Efficacy of Motor Cortex Stimulation for Pain Control

The objective is to determine if motor cortex stimulation works for the following conditions: 1. Deafferentation facial pain, 2. Upper extremity complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and 3. Brachial plexus avulsion or phantom limb pain. Each of these groups of 6 patients (total of 18) will be studied independently and all patients will be implanted with a motor cortex stimulation system. They will be randomised to either a regular or low stimulation setting in the two arms of the study. Each arm will last 3 months.

Spinal Magnetic Stimulation in Neuropathic Pain

It involves delivering a train of magnetic pulses, 5 at each time, to the brain. In the present study, we are using the same method to treat severe pain due to nerve conditions. You will be given up to 1000 pulses in total over the spine in the lower back (Spinal Magnetic Stimulation or SMS). Each train will be given in 10-second intervals. You will have SMS on a single day. You will be given SMS pulses at 1 or 10 per second. No stimulation will be given over the head. You will be assessed before and after the study for up to 1 week. Your usual medical treatment will be continued

A Study of Intra-dermal Injection of Botulinum Toxin Type A for the Diabetic Neuropathic Foot Pain

Effective treatment of neuropathic foot pain in diabetic patients is very important to improve their quality of life. There are many medications used to reduce the diabetic neuropathic pain, including anticonvulsants, anti-depressants or analgesics, but none is universally satisfied. A few previous studies employing BOTOX® i.d. injection for control of trigeminal neuralgia, post-herpes neuralgia indicate that BOTOX® was effective in controlling neuropathic pain. Intradermal injection of BOTOX® to the dorsum of the foot in diabetics should be effective in controlling diabetes-associated polyneuropathic pain of the foot.
