Filter by:The aim of the present study is to assess the current state of mental health of educators and young persons at the education centre for health and care professions in St. Gallen (BZGS) by conducting screening instruments. Furthermore, the investigators aim to identify risk and protective factors for the mental health of vocational trainees in health and care professions. These results are both essential for further research and educational practice. Moreover, results may maximise the chances of creating in future meaningful intervention for young persons in this specific setting.
Family-focused therapy (FFT) is a comprehensive therapy approach applied to individuals and their families. In the present study, the researchers aimed to investigate the effects of family-focused therapy (FFT) in the early stages of psychotic disorder and bipolar disorder, regarding the psychiatric symptomatology, family communication skills, coping capacities, family burden and quality of life. A total of 34 young people diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) and 17 psychotic disorders (PD) will be included in the study.
This study examines the immediate and long-term effectiveness of a group cognitive behavioral therapy intervention (GCBT) in improving health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in children treated for mixed psychiatric disorders in naturalistic child psychiatric outpatient settings. The effects of a treatment-as-usual condition (TAU) is also examined. Further, the study aims to explore the associations among children´s HRQOL dimensions and parental well-being, and how GCBT may influence these associations.
The study goal is to promote viral load suppression among women with serious mental illness (SMI) and HIV in Botswana, given that these women are especially vulnerable to psychiatric medication nonadherence and symptom exacerbation, which are made worse by stigma and threaten antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. The investigators propose to test an intervention to reduce stigma due to the statuses of SMI and HIV, against an attention control condition, in the high-risk transition period after discharge from an initial psychiatric hospitalization. Specifically, the investigators are conducting a two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) with a 4-month follow-up to compare the effectiveness of 1) What Matters Most (WMM)-based intersectional stigma intervention delivered as clients transition from psychiatric hospitalization to outpatient care; and 2) an attention placebo control condition that follows a similar format to isolate the effects of the intervention. The investigators will also assess policymaker workshops where peer women with SMI and HIV co-lead the reporting of RCT findings via lived experience to policymakers to initiate structural change. Enabling women with SMI and HIV to resist stigma has the potential to improve their HIV outcomes and empower these women to elicit broader, structural-level change.
The goal of this clinical trial is to test in three samples, including sample 1: lay people without reported depression symptoms, sample 2: lay people with reported depression symptoms and sample 3: mental health clinicians. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1) do each of these populations show a bias against psychotherapy wherein they judge psychotherapy to be less effective, relative to baseline ratings, when a mental illness (i.e., depression) is attributed to biological factors, 2) whether an intervention emphasizing the neurobiological effects of psychotherapy can remove this bias against psychotherapy for biologically-caused mental disorders, and 3) whether this intervention is more effective compared to an active control intervention that emphasizes the effectiveness of psychotherapy, but not its neurobiological effects. Participants will - rate the effectiveness of psychotherapy for depression before and after learning about the biological causes of depression - be assigned to one of three conditions: 1) an intervention condition where participants will receive a brief reading passage (approximately 126 words in length) providing psychoeducation about how psychotherapy changes the brain of an individual with depression, or 2) an active control condition where participants will receive a reading passage (approximately 115 words) emphasizing the effectiveness of psychotherapy, or 3) a control condition where they will receive no additional materials - as a secondary outcome, participants will also rate the effectiveness of medication for depression, before and after learning about the biological causes of depression
Chronic psychosis, including schizophrenia is now viewed as a progressive disorder where cognitive deficits predate the clinical onset. Early intervention programs improve the general outcome with staged care strategies, supporting the view that the period before and around the first episode of psychosis is a window of opportunity for improving its functional recovery. Pioneering epigenetic analyses indicate that psychosis onset involves oxidative stress and inflammation suggesting that neuroprotective strategies could limit or even prevent the onset of or the transition into a chronic disorder. Several biological factors associated with the emergence of psychosis can all be rectified by using safe and easily accepted supplements including alterations folate deficiency/hyperhomocysteinemia; redox imbalance and deficit in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). The prevalence of these anomalies (20-30%) justifies a systematic detection and could guide personalised add-on strategy. Cognitive remediation improves quality of life (QoL) and functional outcome in patients with chronic psychosis. It would even be more efficacious in the early phase of psychosis by tackling the negative impact of psychosis on education achievement and employment. However, cognitive dysfunctions are often overlooked in patients at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis and patient with a first episode of psychosis (FEP) and cognitive remediation is not always accessible. New technologies can provide us with youth-friendly, non-stigmatising tools, such as applications with cognitive strategies, motivational tools and functioning guidance personalised according to the need of each individual. Patients can have access to it, wherever they live. Early psychosis can be associated with inflammation, metabolic deficiency, as well as early structural brain anomalies that reflect brain plasticity abilities and could influence the prognosis and response to cognitive training. The study hypothesis is that promoting neuroplasticity by cognitive training and personalised virtual psychoeducation guidance could attenuate or reverse early cognitive deficits and improve the overall functional outcome in young patients UHR or FEP and that this effect is modulated by individual brain plasticity abilities. The overall objective of PsyCARE_trial is to improve early intervention in psychosis by providing a composite personalised care (CPC) that will enable personalised cognitive training and psychoeducation guidance, adapted to individuals' needs, cognitive abilities and biological background.
This project is aimed at advancing neuropsychological diagnostics, enriching and modernizing the panorama of both clinical and forensic psychometric testing. The rapid socio-demographic changes, the developments of neuropsychological semiotics and nosography, as well as the growing applicative specialization of neuropsychological assessment make it necessary to introduce further tools to satisfy the diagnostic requests in clinical contexts and more recently in the forensic field (i.e., tests to be administered remotely; bedside screeners; domain-specific in-depth tests; tools for assessing testamentary capacity). Specifically, the present study aims to: a) develop, calibrate and evaluate the psychometric properties of I and II level clinical and/or forensic neuropsychological tests evaluating instrumental and non-instrumental functions in a sample of neurologically healthy individuals representative of the Italian population ; b) evaluate the cross-sectional and longitudinal clinical usability of the aforementioned tests in clinical samples (patients with neurological and neuropsychiatric pathologies of different etiology).
This is a three-lesson, disclosure-based stigma reduction program meant to reduce barriers to community living and participation for college students with psychiatric disabilities. The goal is to improve community living and participation of individuals with psychiatric disabilities within their postsecondary community using the Honest Open Proud (HOP) program. There are 3 specific objectives of the project:1) evaluate program fidelity, 2) assess program feasibility, and 3) conduct a randomized controlled trial of the HOP program with college students with mental illness to examine its efficacy. Anticipated outcomes include increases in 1) community integration, 2)self-esteem and self-efficacy, 3) empowerment and self-determination, 4) disclosure of mental illness in order to obtain needed support, and 5) care seeking/service engagement for mental illness. Ultimately, we expect to see increased academic persistence and achievement among HOP program completers.
This qualitative study, combining psychiatric and anthropological perspectives, focused on the development and/or worsening of patients' eating disorders since Covid-19, as well as the experiences and perceptions of those around them - such as their family, teachers or staff. School and nursing staff. This multi-site approach will provide a multidimensional perspective on the experience of individuals and those around them, as well as a triangulation of data. The hypotheses to explain the increase in Eating Disorders (EDs) will be addressed through semi-structured interviews offered to study participants.
The purpose of this study is to assess whether an integrated harm reduction intervention (IHRI), compared to harm reduction (HR) services as usual, will improve harm reduction service utilization among Black and Latinx people who use drugs (PWUD).
