Human subject donation allows for the creation of the proposed genebank.
The purpose of this research study is to test an experimental drug ATI-5923 vs Coumadin. The study is intended to demonstrate ATI-5923 is superior to Coumadin for keeping INR values in the desired therapeutic range. Patients who require chronic anticoagulation with one or more of the following conditions are eligible for the study: atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, prosthetic heart valve, venous thromboembolic disease, or history of myocardial infarction or cardiomyopathy will be enrolled.

Two large homocysteine-lowering B-vitamin intervention trials have been performed in Norway during the period 1998 to 2005, NORVIT and WENBIT. The main objective in these trials was to study the clinical effects of homocysteine-lowering therapy with folic acid and vitamin B12 in patients with established coronary artery disease. Follow-up was terminated for NORVIT on Marc 31st 2004 and for WENBIT October 5th 2005, and none of the two trials proved any protective effect of the B-vitamin intervention on cardiovascular outcomes. There is so far no data on possible long-term effects following years of such B-vitamin treatment. Thus, the main objective of the combinded NORVIT-WENBIT study will will be to evaluate the long-term effect of the B-vitamin intervention on incident life-style diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporotic fractures and cancer. A secondary object will be the identification of risk phenotypes or genotypes, and if such risk associations are midified by the B-vitamin intervention
Mechanical recanalization of the culprit artery in acute myocardial infarction using stents provides in 2003, TIMI 3 flow restoration in more than 90% of patients. However, the prognosis of this condition remains poor, to a large degree because of microcirculatory dysfunction that is observed, in near than 20 to 40 % of patients, during or following primary percutaneous intervention. The lack of ST-segment elevation resolution after angioplasty with stenting is a marker of microcirculatory dysfunction and is associated with a poor prognosis. Routine administration with primary stenting of the platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitor Abciximab in acute myocardial infarction is still a matter of debate with conflicting results emerging from two major clinical studies ADMIRAL and CADILLAC. However, evidences are in favour of a benefit of this treatment especially when administrated early (in a pre-hospital manner) before percutaneous coronary intervention.Our primary purpose is to investigate the benefit of an early (i.e. pre-hospital) vs. a conventional (i.e. per-angiography) administration of Abciximab on ST-segment elevation regression at one hour after primary percutaneous angioplasty.
The benefit of current reperfusion therapies for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is limited by post-infarction left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. Many clinic trails showed the short term outcome of bone marrow stem cell transplantation for MI patients, but rare report of long term follow-up results. Our aim was to investigate 4 years' efficacy and LV functional improvement of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMC) transplantation in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction.
