Tahini, Antioxidant Status and Endothelial Function

Cardiovascular disease (CVD), a cluster of disorders that affect heart and blood vessels, is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality around the world and is responsible for 17.9 million deaths annually worldwide. CVD risk factors can be modifiable (nutrition, physical activity, obesity, smoking, hyperlipidemia, hypertension and diabetes) and non-modifiable (age, gender, ethnicity, family history and socioeconomic status). Chronic exposure to CVD risk factors induces oxidative stress and promotes inflammation. In addition, endothelial cells in response to the inflammatory reaction secrete growth factors, leading to the destruction of vascular endothelium and promoting atherogenesis. Oxidative stress refers to the imbalance between anti-oxidant and pro-oxidant compounds, with predominance of the pro-oxidant ones. Reactive Oxygen Species overproduction has been implicated in pathogenesis and complications of numerous diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and chronic kidney disease. Moreover, endothelium consists of a single layer of endothelial cells; it is the natural barrier between blood and tissues and also an endocrine organ. It plays a key role in vascular homeostasis by maintaining a balance between vasodilation and vasoconstriction and is responsible for fluid filtration, blood vessel tone, hormone trafficking, hemostasis, regulation of blood flow and growth of blood vessels. Thus, reductions in endothelial function are detrimental and predict and precede the development of overt CVD. Sesame belongs to Pedaliaceae family and can be consumed in different forms such as seeds, oil or tahini, i.e., a 100 % peeled, ground and roasted sesame paste. Sesame seeds are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, proteins, vitamin E and lignans, such as sesamin, sesamolin and sesamol. Recent studies have highlighted the antioxidant, antihypertensive, hypolipidemic and appetite control properties of sesame seeds and sesame oil. Regarding the consumption of tahini and its effect on human health, only three studies are available in the current literature, one of them in patients with type 2 diabetes, one in diabetic animal model and one in Alzheimer's disease animal model. Thus, the aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of tahini consumption on oxidative stress, blood pressure, endothelial function and arterial stiffness in healthy males postprandially.

Efficacy of Electroacupuncture in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The aim of this clinical study is to assess the effectiveness of electroacupuncture in reducing the severity of symptoms, in improving limb function, in improving the aesthetic and motor conduction of the median nerve and in reducing its cross-sectional area at the inlet of the carpal tunnel in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. All upper extremities diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome will be treated with electroacupuncture for 8 sessions. Clinical, electrophysiological and ultrasonography outcome measures will be evaluated before and after the intervention, to assess the result.

This is a prospective, multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the efficacy, safety, patient outcome measures, tolerability, immunogenicity, PK, and PD of efgartigimod PH20 SC in adult participants aged from 18 years with PV or PF. The trial comprises a screening period of up to 3 weeks, a treatment period of up to 30 weeks, and an 8-week follow-up period for participants who do not enroll into the open-label extension (OLE) trial ARGX-113-1905. The primary objective of the ARGX-113-1904 trial is to demonstrate the efficacy of subcutaneous administration of efgartigimod co-formulated with recombinant human hyaluronidase PH20 (Efgartigimod PH20 SC) compared to placebo in the treatment of participants with Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV). Secondary objectives are to also demonstrate the efficacy of efgartigimod PH20 SC in the treatment of participants with Pemphigus Foliaceus (PF), and to demonstrate early onset of action and a prednisone-sparing effect. After confirmation of eligibility, participants will be randomized in a 2: 1 ratio to receive efgartigimod PH20 SC or placebo

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic in Perinatal Mental Health (RISEUP-PPD-COVID-19)

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a new pathology, declared a public health emergency by the World Health Organization, which can have negative consequences for pregnant women and their newborns. It is estimated that 1 in 5 women will develop a mental illness in the perinatal period. COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with anxiety and depression in the population. The current pandemic is a unique stressor with potentially wide-ranging consequences in the perinatal period, but little is known about the impact of COVID-19 on perinatal mental health. Thus, the objective of this study is to explore the experiences of pregnant and new mothers during the current pandemic, particularly its impact on perinatal mental health (including depression, anxiety, PTSD and psychological distress). Methods: The study design is a prospective observational study, with a baseline assessment and three follow-ups: one month; three months; and six months post baseline. This international study will be carried out in 11 European countries (Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, France, Greece, Israel, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom) Chile and Brazil. The study population will comprise pregnant women and new mothers with an infant under six months of age, covering a broad range of women across the perinatal period. Ethics and dissemination: The study and handling of the data will follow all national required data protection standards. Each researcher (or team of researchers) involved will submit the project to their local ethical committee before starting the project. Results from the project will be disseminated in peer reviewed journals and international conferences.

SuPAR in Adult Patients With Covid-19

The biomarker soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) is the soluble form of the cell membrane-bound protein urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR), which is expressed mainly on immune cells, endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells. SPARCOL is a multi-center prospective observational study aiming to investigate if suPAR measured at admission can predict the risk of future complications and mortality in adults patients with Covid-19. The study will include approximately 500 patients and will be one of the largest so far. The study has been registered at Clinical Trials.gov and has been approved by the Institutional Review Board of the University Hospital of Larisa. Consecutive adult patients (≥ 18 years ) who are admitted to the Hospital due to Covid-19 will be screened for inclusion. Participants will undergo sampling of peripheral venous blood, immediately after admission. Blood samples drawn from all patients and EDTA plasma will be stored at -80° C until later measurement. Plasma suPAR levels will be determined using the suPARnostic® ELISA assay (ViroGates, Denmark). The primary endpoint will be the presence of respiratory complications, admission to ICU, and survival at 30 days. Secondary endpoints are also included, such as organ injury, hospital length of stay, and survival. Data analysis will be based on predefined data points on a prospective data collection form.
