There are about 189 clinical studies being (or have been) conducted in Ecuador. The country of the clinical trial is determined by the location of where the clinical research is being studied. Most studies are often held in multiple locations & countries.
In December 2019, an outbreak of pneumonia of initially unknown cause was detected in Wuhan (Hubei, China), and it was quickly determined that it was caused by a new coronavirus, that is, the SARS-CoV- 2 virus, causing the disease called COVID-19. Since then, the outbreak has spread to 5 continents, affecting 185 countries or regions, with more than 2,500,000 confirmed cases as of April 21, 2020. Ecuador, the 9th country according to territorial extension, and the 7th according to the number of inhabitants in South America, is the 4th country with the highest number of cases in that region of the world, only behind Brazil, Peru and Chile. According to data from the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) of Ecuador, as of April 20, 2020, the National Institute for Public Health Research (INSPI) has registered 33,279 samples, of which 10,128 are positive for SARS-CoV-2. By far, the province of Guayas where Guayaquil is located, the main city in terms of number of inhabitants of the country, is the region with the highest number of affected, with 6921 confirmed cases and 6274 with suspicion. Given the importance of this infection, the severity in some cases, its rapid distribution, and the differences in the Ecuadorian population with respect to the other countries where infected patients have been reported, the investigators consider that an updated analysis of cases, taking as a reference, patients seen in various hospitals of the city of Guayaquil can help identify the clinical characteristics and severity of the disease.
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are stromal cells that have the ability to self-renew and also exhibit multilineage differentiation. MSCs can be isolated from a variety of tissues, such as umbilical cord, bone marrow, and adipose tissue. The multipotent properties of MSCs make them a promising option for the treatment of osteoarthritis (OA). Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSC) and adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSC) have been used separately to treat OA. The aim of the present study will be to compare in a randomized non blind controlled clinical trial 3 types of intra-articular injections containing MSC populations obtained from two clinically relevant sources: BM-MSC, AD-MSC and a combination of both BM-MSC and AD-MSC.
ACT is a randomized clinical trial to assess therapies to reduce the clinical progression of COVID-19.
Gastric cancer is the third most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide (1). Upper endoscopy is necessary to detect neoplastic macroscopic features at an early stage, but subtle abnormalities in the gastric mucosa are often missed or misdiagnosed (1). Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is involved in the pathogenesis of gastric diseases, such as, peptic ulcers, gastric lymphoma, and gastric cancer. Therefore, the necessity to recognize malignant gastric lesions at an early stage is imperative.
Internet-Based Interventions are increasingly relevant as an alternative for reducing the gap in treatment of metal disorders such as depression, especially in resource-limited regions. In this study the investigators will try to evaluate the effectiveness of an Internet-Based Intervention culturally adapted to the Ecuadorian population for treatment of depression.
Liver cirrhosis with the further development of portal hypertension implies structural and vasculature alteration in the portosplenic circulation. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is the standard of care for the detection and treatment of esophageal varices, as esophageal varices serve as a surrogate for estimating a portal pressure gradient > 10 mmHG. Endoscopic ultrasound evaluation allows the detection of peri-esophageal collateral veins, perforating veins and para-esophageal collateral veins, which has demonstrated to be effective for the prediction of esophageal varices recurrence after variceal eradication. The investigators aimed to compare esophagogastroduodenoscopy versus endoscopic ultrasound evaluation for the early diagnosis of portal hypertension in cirrhotic patients.
Confocal laser endomicroscopy detects inflammatory markers undetectable during high definition endoscopy. The investigators aimed to evaluate the role of peridiverticular and colonic mucosa inflammation in the prediction of the complicated diverticular disease using confocal laser endomicroscopy evaluation in the peridiverticular area in consecutive patients.
Diagnosing the nutritional status of cancer patients is extremely important. An appropriate nutritional status supports a better tolerance to the treatment. A working protocol is essential to start with Nutritional Screening. If it is detected Malnutrition Risk or Malnutrition, diet counseling, and the specific therapeutic for each patient must be provided. This descriptive study will serve three aims: - Register in the cancer patient's electronic medical record their nutritional status at the admission and when the patient is discharged. - Determine the percentage of malnourished patients or in the risk of malnutrition who are admitted to hospitalization. - Recognize the number of patients that required specialized nutritional care. The purpose of this study is to determine if 30% of the patients admitted to the headquarters of SOLCA in Guayaquil from the Ecuadorian Cancer Society are at malnutrition risk or with any specific malnutrition level.
This study aims to assess the prevalence and severity of dementia in an established cohort of community-dwelling older adults living in three neighboring rural Ecuadorian villages (Atahualpa, El Tambo, and Prosperidad), as well as to evaluate clinical and neuroimaging correlates of dementia in the study population. By the use of the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDRS), the study also aims to assess the lower cutoff of the MoCA that better correlates with the occurrence of dementia in the study population. In addition, this study will provides grounds for the initiation of a prospective cohort study to assess factors influencing the development of dementia in the follow-up.
To describe real-world demographic and clinical characteristics, treatment characteristics, and clinical outcomes among patients in Latin America who were treated with first-line sunitinib for metastatic renal cell carcinoma and switched from the 4/2 to 2/1 administration schedule
