The actual standard of care is stereotaxic body radiation therapy (SBRT) alone in non-surgical patients. The added value of vertebroplasty to SBRT is not well documented in the literature, nor whether performing vertebroplasty before radiotherapy treatment leads to a reduction in the rate of fractures and post-SBRT pain.

Using Peripheral Neurostimulation to Improve Work Rehabilitation

Physical exercise plays a central role in work rehabilitation. However, the presence of pain (particularly common in older adults and aging workers) can lead to a fear of movement (kinesiophobia) and hinder rehabilitation. Access to rehabilitation care is also a barrier for many older adults, which could be circumvented through telerehabilitation. The objective of this pilot study is to document the feasibility and explore the effect of a telerehabilitation intervention combining therapeutic exercises and real TENS (experimental group) or placebo TENS (control group) in individuals aged 55 and over who have stopped working (triple-blind randomized controlled study). To do so, various feasibility indicators (e.g., recruitment rate, adherence) and clinical measures (e.g., kinesiophobia, pain during exercise) will be documented before and after the intervention. Together, these measures will help assess the appropriateness of conducting a large-scale study aimed at potentiating work rehabilitation in older populations.

This study aims to develop a new measure which can accurately assess social connection for people with dementia living in long-term care homes. The Social Connection in Long-term Care home residents (SONNET) study will use interviews and focus groups with people affected by dementia and long-term care residents to establish what aspects of social connection are important for people living in care homes. These findings and a review of other studies and measures will be used to develop a new measure or measures of social connection which will then be tested in a study based in care homes in Canada and the UK.

Nutritional Support During Induction Therapy for Esophageal Cancer

Patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer have difficulty eating, as the food pipe becomes obstructed by the cancer. This may impair the ability for the patient to receive appropriate calorie intake, especially during administration of chemotherapy and radiation therapy given prior to surgical resection. A strategy is to place a feeding tube directly in the stomach or in the small bowel to have an access to the patient's gastrointestinal tract during administration of chemo radiation therapy. However, these feeding tubes may lead to adverse events, including dislodgement, infection, the tube may be plugged, etc. If these complications were to happen, patients may have their treatment delayed, may have to come to the emergency department or even be admitted. In some cases, patients may need to have a surgery performed to treat the complication. Most centres in Canada have moved away from placement of these feeding tubes due to the high incidence of complications associated with the feeding tubes placement, and due to the high efficacy from the chemoradiation therapy in shrinking the tumour, allowing for the patient to swallow. In London, the preference from the Medical and Radiation Oncologists was to have these feeding tubes placed to avoid delay in treating the patients. There is therefore significant controversy as to what is the best approach in this patient population. Our goal is to run a feasibility randomized controlled trial studying this question.
