Family Study of Lymphoproliferative Disorders

Blood and lymph node cancers can begin in either the lymphatic tissues (as in the case of lymphoma) or in the bone marrow (as with leukemia and myeloma), and they all are involved with the uncontrolled growth of white blood cells. There are many subtypes of these cancers, e.g., chronic lymphocytic leukemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Since there is evidence that these cancers cluster in families, this study aims to understand how genetics and environmental exposures contribute to the development of these cancers.

Current European Society of Cardiology Guidelines recommend concomitant atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation for all symptomatic patients undergoing other cardiac surgeries, but the safety and potential benefits of concomitant atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation at the time of double valve replacement remains unexamined. A retrospective review of patients with AF who underwent double valve replacement with or without concomitant surgical ablation in our institute starting from April 2006.

Promoting Women's Health: A Gender Specific Smoking Cessation Program for Female Smokers in Hong Kong

This project aims to publicize quitting among female smokers, and encourage and support those who want to quit by providing face-to-face and/or telephone counseling. The objectives are to: 1. Build up a Women Against Tobacco Taskforce (WATT) with woman volunteers from various organizations to promote quitting in female smokers, and to arouse public awareness of the effects of smoking on sexual, reproductive and child health, and other diseases among women. 2. Conduct a survey among the women volunteers and staff of the women's organization to ascertain their learning needs, knowledge, attitudes, and practice of tobacco control and smoking cessation, and to identify interested participants to join the smoking cessation training program. 3. Design and deliver a smoking cessation counseling training program (based on the learning needs identified), to equip women volunteers with the knowledge and skills in smoking cessation. 4. Develop and evaluate a gender-specific smoking cessation program to help female smokers to reduce and quit smoking. 5. Promote women's health and quality of life, and reduce the life-long morbidity and mortality of female smokers in the long term. 6. Examine the long term (3-year) impact of a gender-specific smoking cessation program on the smoking behaviors of female smokers. 7. Examine another long-term (6-year) impact of a gender-specific smoking cessation program on the smoking behaviors of female smokers. 8. Ascertain the contributing factors in the rate of quitting, retention and relapse. 9. Investigate Hong Kong women smokers awareness and attitude to women quitline.

While advancements in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) have improved image quality, it is unclear how these improvements are connected to the clinical evaluation of individuals with cardiovascular disease. The aim of this large prospective registry revolves around 4 key principles: 1) utilize CMR to gain additional pathophysiologic insights into cardiovascular disease, 2) understand how CMR compares to alternative cardiovascular diagnostic modalities, 3) determine how CMR affects clinical management decisions, and 4) establish a link between CMR findings and long term prognosis in patients with known or suspected cardiovascular disease. The ultimate aim is to utilize CMR to improve patient outcomes. CMR techniques to be studies include function, fibrosis, and flow. Focus areas include valvular heart disease, ischemic heart disease, cardiomyopathies, and vascular disease.

Growth and Body Composition in Preterm Infants

Growth is traditionally used as a prognostic measure after admission to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Quality of neonatal intensive care is one of the factors determining the health and quality of life for those that survive, with the principal objective of increasing disability-free survival. Nowadays, there is some researches showing us that these preterm babies present a different body composition when they achieve term age compared with babies birth at term and this condition could be putting these babies in risk to metabolic syndrome early in adult age. The majority of infants born between 24 and 29 weeks of gestational age fail to achieve the mean birth weight for fetuses of the same gestational age, and many weigh below the 10th percentile at hospital discharge. The focus of this study is the growth and body composition of very low birth weight infants growing in the extrauterine environment. The central question is, when they reach the corresponding term weight, is the body composition of newborns growing outside of the uterus different from that of infants growing in the intrauterine environment? The investigators are also trying to validate 3 different methods to research body composition: DXA, air-displacement plethysmography and electric bioimpedance.
