This study will evaluate the effects of diet composition (i.e., amount of protein and carbohydrate) during a 6-month weight loss intervention and 12-months of follow-up on physical function, muscle mass, and weight loss maintenance in obese older adults. Participants will receive either a protein or carbohydrate supplement along with a behavioral weight loss intervention.

This is a prospective, 24-month, longitudinal study of patients planning to undergo bariatric surgery (Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass or Sleeve Gastrectomy) in which we aim to identify correlates and predictors of observed weight loss trajectories following bariatric surgery. This approach will expand current knowledge by examining the combined impact of empirically supported behavioral and biological data in a large sample over time. Intensive measurement of problematic eating behaviors, mood, and compliance with diet and exercise regimens post-surgery will be analyzed in the context of lterations in parallel with, or in response to, changes observed in the gut microbiota. Identifying these post-surgical predictors of weight loss and comorbidity resolution will allow for the development of individualized interventions to optimize surgery-related outcomes.

Simple Changes Weight Loss Intervention

The investigators examined feasibility and acceptability of a non-restrictive diet focused on increasing dietary fiber and lean protein for weight loss. Fifteen obese adults enrolled in a 12-week assessment which included 6 bi-weekly individual dietary counseling sessions to attain a daily goal of higher fiber (>35 g/day) and lean protein (0.8 g per kilogram/day of individual's ideal body weight).

Sourdough whole-grain bread is considered a healthy alternative to white, refined-wheat bread. Effect of a Technology-Based Intervention on Weight Change Post-Bariatric Surgery

The primary aim of this study is to examine the effect of applying a minimal contact technology-based intervention (TECH) at 1-year post-bariatric surgery on weight change compared to Standard Care. Forty participants at 1-year post bariatric surgery will be randomized to TECH or Standard Care for a period of 6 months (12 to 18 months post-surgery). Analyses will be conducted to compare these interventions for differences in body weight, body composition, fitness, physical activity, engagement, psychosocial measures, and intervention cost and cost-effectiveness of each approach. TECH will consist of a wearable monitor that provides feedback on energy expenditure and physical activity, electronic tracking of dietary intake, and integration of an electronic scale to provide comprehensive feedback to the participant on all components of weight management. TECH participants will receive a monthly telephone call from the intervention staff to provide guidance on their weight management efforts.

This study evaluates the relationship between several genetic variants and the response to a hypocaloric diet, in order to design a genetic test which permits prescribe the more personalized diet for each individual according to her genotype. Half of the participants will assigned to a moderate high protein diet, while the other half will assigned to a high carbohydrate diet.
