Filter by:The purpose of this study is to examine whether providing additional intervention support to individuals with lower than expected weight loss within the initial stages of an internet-based behavioral weight loss program improves weight loss outcomes at Week 12, compared to the internet program alone.
The objective of the study is to assess the effect of diets with different protein composition (20%, 27% and 35%), mainly coming from animal proteins such as lean red meat, on body weight and lipid profile in overweight and obese women. A dietary intervention is carried out during 3 months in 90 women who are individually randomized to an hypocaloric diet with three types of macronutrient composition: 1) 35% proteins, 30% fat and 35% carbohydrates; 2) 27% proteins, 30% fat and 43% carbohydrates and 3) 20% proteins, 30% fat and 50% carbohydrates. Around 50% of total proteins in diet come from lean red meat (leg or shoulder of lamb) by providing up to 15 different recipes to participants to use them as part of the diet. At the beginning of the study, after 6 weeks and at the end of the intervention, the following parameters are determined: anthropometric (weight, waist circumference, body mass index and body composition), blood pressure, dietary (72-hours dietary registry) and exercise assessments and biochemical analysis (total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein A1, apolipoprotein B, iron, transferrin, ferritin, uric acid, glucose, HbA1c, insulin and adipokines). In 3-months visit, participants will be advised to follow the prescribed diets during the next 3 months. Monitoring visits with the nutritionist will not be performed. A follow-up visit will be done after 3-months of end of intervention (at 6-months after beginning the study) to assess the long-time efficacy on main endpoint of each diet. In this visit only anthropometric parameters (weight, waist circumference, body mass index and body composition) will be determined.
Patients with cancer often experience appetite loss and weight loss unintentionally. Rapid weight loss negatively impact on physical functioning, quality of life, and overall survival. Patients will be randomly assigned into two groups. An intervention with acupuncture may slow down or stop the progression of cancer-related anorexia and weight loss.

This study is being done to learn about the changes that weight loss causes on brain function, memory and thinking ability in adults. The study does NOT cover any costs associated with bariatric surgery.
The primary goal of this clinical trial is to examine whether provision of portion-controlled prepackaged foods in the context of a reduced-energy diet prescription and counseling is associated with a greater degree of weight loss at three months in overweight or obese men and women, compared to usual care or control conditions in which the prescribed reduced-energy diet is to be consumed via self-selected foods. The effect on body weight and recognized indicators of disease risk, diet quality and cardiopulmonary fitness, as well as meal satiety and satisfaction, will also be examined. Participants are 184 overweight or obese men and women in San Diego area who will be randomly assigned to usual care or control conditions.
This pilot clinical trial studies protein-sparing modified fast (PSMF) intervention for weight loss in obese endometrial cancer survivors. The PSMF is a diet that is very low in carbohydrates and calories, designed to induce fast, safe weight loss. The diet consists of only lean meats (beef, pork, poultry, and seafood) in amounts adequate to meet protein requirements based on the individual's body weight. The PSMF may help endometrial cancer survivors achieve significant weight loss, reduce the risk of chronic disease, and improve quality of life.
Surgery is considered the best therapy for morbid obesity and its comorbidities, where alterations in lifestyle, diets and drugs have failed to achieve weight loss. The most widely performed in Israel is Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG), and several studies have reported high success rates in reducing weight and improving comorbidities common among obese patients such as hypertension; diabetes mellitus type II; dyslipidemia; osteoarthritis; obstructive sleep apnea etc. The hypothesis of this prospective study is that the LSG is an effective treatment for achieving weight loss, for improving and even curing comorbidities and for improving the patient's QOL. Another supposition is that patient's socio-economic status can influence success rates of bariatric procedures.
With currently 35% of U.S. adolescents being overweight and one in six having metabolic syndrome, adolescent obesity is one of the major global health challenges of the 21st century. Few enduring treatment strategies have been identified in adolescent populations and the majority of standard weight loss programs fail to adequately address the impact of psychological factors on eating behavior and the beneficial contribution of parental involvement in adolescent behavior change. A critical need exists to expand treatment development efforts beyond traditional education and cognitive-behavioral programs and to explore alternative treatment models for adolescent obesity. Meditation-based mindful eating programs may represent a unique and novel scientific approach to the current adolescent obesity epidemic as they address key psychological variables affecting weight. Furthermore, the recent expansion of mindfulness programs to include family relationships shows the immense potential for broadening the customarily individual focus of this intervention to include broader factors thought to influence adolescent health outcomes. Thus, we propose to develop a mindful eating approach to eating behavior and weight loss specifically tailored for adolescents and their families. The first phase of our three phase development process will be devoted to adapting an adolescent protocol (Mindful Eating-A) based on an established mindful eating program currently being used with adult populations. We will then develop a 'family enhanced Mindful Eating-A' (Mindful Eating-A+F) protocol that integrates a family systems perspective. The goal of Mindful Eating-A+F is to expand the focus of Mindful Eating-A to include family factors that influence adolescent eating behaviors. The second design phase will consist of an initial test of both intervention components to provide feedback on usefulness and acceptability (N = 10 families). The final phase will examine the overall efficacy of the optimized Mindful Eating-A+F, relative to the Mindful Eating-A intervention with 30 overweight adolescents (BMI > 85th percentile) ages 14-17 and at least one parent. Within this examination, post-treatment and 3-month follow-up comparisons across the two treatment approaches will be made and effect sizes within and between treatments will be assessed.
The specific aims of this study are to determine the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of a weight loss program compared with usual care (control) treatment on 6-month changes in body weight, body fat, serum hormones, and breast tissue markers associated with prognosis in breast cancer survivors.
