Filter by:The plot study aims to evaluate the effect of 8 weeks of stress reducing intervention on atherosclerotic plaque inflammation in adults, as quantified by positron emission tomography (PET) with fluorine-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) in individuals with increased psychosocial stress.
Anxiety, depression and stress are common during pregnancy. These have been found to negatively impact mother and child outcomes. When anxiety, depression, and stress are present in pregnant women, it is therefore important to manage them to improve the outcome of the mother and her child. Although pregnancy itself has been shown to increase anxiety, depression and stress, these issues are further elevated in high-risk pregnancy groups. Mothers at risk of preterm delivery (less than 37 weeks gestational age), have been found to have higher rates of depression, anxiety and stress compared to uncomplicated term pregnancies. In addition, anxiety, depression and stress symptoms themselves increase the risk for preterm delivery, creating a vicious cycle for this high-risk group. Mindfulness is a tool that has been during pregnancy to reduce depression, anxiety, and stress. Many studies have found mindfulness to be an appropriate management option in normal term pregnancies. To date, there have been no studies that have looked at Mindfulness as a tool for mothers admitted due to risk of preterm delivery. This study will explore the impact of teaching mindfulness skills to inpatient mothers at risk of preterm delivery and studying its effects on maternal depression, anxiety, and stress. This study involves providing Mindfulness strategies during the mother's inpatient admission for the risk of preterm delivery for four consecutive weeks. Participants will be enrolled through informed consent. All participants will be given pre and post participation questionnaires to examine the impact of mindfulness on anxiety, depression and stress. The participants will also be encouraged to maintain a weekly mindfulness log. The results of this research may lead to future studies looking at the impact of mindfulness practice for high-risk pregnancies. This will also help open up the possibility of offering such courses for inpatient and outpatient high-risk pregnancies in the future.
The purpose of this study is to assess the potential for a non-invasive sensory based intervention to reduce the stress associated with a COVID-19 diagnosis.
Recent reports have highlighted Covid-19 related increase in levels of depression and stress related disorders in the health care professionals. Pranayama (ancient yogic breathing techniques) helps harmonizing breathing by regular voluntary control of breath. Yoga has been shown to modulate autonomic nervous functions of the brain. Sudarshan kriya Yoga (SKY) is a unique form of pranayama taught by ''Art of Living UK'' a non-profit organization -for over two decades. SKY involves simple rhythmic breathing technique (easy to practice) that aims at harmonizing body, mind and emotions. Sudarshan kriya yoga (SKY) has been shown to be beneficial in reducing levels of stress, anxiety and depression. This breathing based meditation technique has previously been shown to be beneficial in post-traumatic stress disorder. In this pilot study the aim is to assess the feasibility and effect of SKY in NHS health care workers with possible Covid-19 related stress and anxiety disorder.
Deviant peer affiliation is one of the most important predictors of alcohol use in adolescence. These affiliations arise when socially marginalized youth self-aggregate and reinforce alcohol use and other deviant activity (i.e., "deviant peer clustering"). Existing efficacious school-based prevention programs generally have small effects and can be difficult to disseminate with fidelity and challenging to sustain due to complex designs and significant time-and-money expenditures required for materials and training. Existing school-based prevention programs have not provided compelling value to schools, which has limited their dissemination. The investigators found significantly lower rates of deviant peer affiliation and alcohol/tobacco use and moderate-to-strong suppressive effects on bullying, victimization, stress, and emotional problems, and strong positive effects on student engagement, achievement, and social-emotional skills in peer-learning intervention schools compared to control schools. However, teachers in intervention schools faced challenges implementing peer learning, including: (1) design fidelity: ensuring that peer learning provided the most positive student experience by including all the essential design elements; and, (2) instructional support: managing the flow and timing of the activities to complete the lesson on time while dealing with unexpected disruptions. Investigators developed an initial version of a mobile software application (PeerLearning.net) that provided easy-to-use organizational templates with workflow support that teachers used to automate the design and delivery of peer learning lessons. In this cluster randomized trial of the app, the investigators will use a sample of middle and high schools and conduct pre/post student assessments of peer relations, alcohol/drug use, antisocial/prosocial behavior, and social-emotional skills. They will also collect information on stress, bullying/victimization and related outcomes, including sleep quality and mental health. Investigators will also collect data on the frequency of lesson delivery with the app by teacher and school to assess dosage, which will be incorporated into our analyses. The investigators hypothesize that use of PeerLearning.net will have significant suppressive effects on alcohol use and related outcomes (i.e., tobacco/marijuana use, antisocial behavior, bullying, emotional problems) and promote increased levels of social-emotional skills and prosocial behavior. The investigators hypothesize that these results will be moderated by dosage (i.e., use of the app), such that greater usage yields larger effects.
Parents' mental health contributes to their feeding practices how they perceive and respond to their children's behavior. Suboptimal feeding practices may promote dysfunctional eating behaviours in children and contribute to children's weigh. The purpose of this review is to identify existing literature on the association between parents' stress and their feeding styles and practices
This study is being conducted to evaluate the efficacy of acupressure in promoting health and well-being among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The investigators hypothesize that providing participants with a remote and standardized self-acupressure training program will improve HRQOL and the perception of stress. In the event that the study demonstrates acupressure to be safe and effective for this indication, the training could be scaled up and deployed at low-cost nationally and internationally.
Background: The hz Clinic registry is a programme made of five scheduled cohorts designed to include participants dealing with Immunity compromise, Pain, Ageing and Stress (general and pandemic anxieties) who are to be followed for 6 month to five years in their structured routine of pulsed electro resonance (PEMF) to determine their clinical outcome in the real world, contributing evidence for benchmarking fellow cohort participant variance. Here we report baseline characteristics, PEMF transfer events and outcomes in participants in the UK. This study serves as a calibration proforma for downstream real world evidence observations of PEMF in the field.
Perfectionism is characterized by setting high standards and striving for achievement, sometimes at the expense of social relationships and wellbeing. Despite sometimes being viewed as a positive feature by others, people with perfectionism tend to be overly concerned about their performance and how they are being perceived by people around them. This tends to create inflexible standards, cognitive biases, and performance-related behaviors that maintain a belief that self-worth is linked to accomplishments. Cognitive behavior therapy has been shown to be a viable treatment for perfectionism, both in terms of reducing levels of perfectionism and improving psychiatric symptoms. Furthermore, a number of recent studies indicate that it can be successfully delivered via the Internet, both with regular support and guidance on demand from a therapist. In the present study protocol, a clinical trial for perfectionism is described and outlined. In total, 128 participants will be recruited and randomized to either a treatment that has already been demonstrated to have many benefits, Internet-based Cognitive Behavior Therapy for perfectionism (iCBT-P), or an active comparison condition, Internet-based Unified Protocol (iUP), targeting the emotions underlying depression and anxiety disorders. The results will be investigated with regard to self-reported outcomes of perfectionism, psychiatric symptoms, self-compassion, and quality of life, at post-treatment and at six- and 12-month follow-up. Both iCBT-P and iUP are expected to have positive effects, but the difference between conditions and adherence to respective treatment are currently unknown and will be explored. The clinical trial is believed to lead to a better understanding of how perfectionism can be treated, with the aim of providing efficacious treatments in an accessible format via the Internet.
Interventional, three-armed, open, monocentric, medium-term follow-up, pre-test-post-test design, controlled, parallel group study to investigate the effects of a group singing intervention on neuroendocrine (hair cortisol, salivary cortisol, salivary alpha amylase), immune (salivary immunoglobulin A/s-IgA), and psychological (psychological stress, mood, social contacts, emotional and social competence, self-esteem, and quality of life) responses in mentally ill and healthy children and adolescents (N=135, age range 10 -18). Additionally, the child and adolescent psychiatry group (age range 13-18) takes part in three hour creative workshops every two weeks.
