Filter by:The investigators aim to test an evidence-based intervention, allocated to a mobile app designed to parents and their children with 3 to 6 years old, identified by family doctors or nurses at well-child care visits as overweight or obese for age. This intervention aims to improve parent's perceptions and attitudes regarding children's weight status and food intake, leading to better dietary intake and children's' eating behaviors through positive parental child-feeding practices. In this study, the investigators aim to assess the feasibility of the intervention and explore its impact on the beliefs and attitudes of parents.
Obesity is a problem of ever-growing importance, especially in industrialized countries, both in adults and in the pediatric population. Children and obese adolescents, like adults, have an increased risk, compared with normal-weight peers, to develop metabolic syndrome and atherosclerotic disease, pathophysiological basis of cardiovascular events. Alteration of the elastic properties of the arteries has been described previously in obese children and adolescents and is considered an initial marker of atherosclerotic vascular damage. The determination of the indices of arterial stiffness (PWV, Pulse Wave Velocity; AI, Augmentation Index, SI, Stiffness Index) is possible through techniques currently used for the determination of vascular function even in children. Nuts and hazelnuts are rich in potentially beneficial substances including unsaturated fatty acids, especially omega-6 (present in both) and omega-3 (present only in nuts), Several clinical trials have already shown in adults a potential beneficial effect of the addition of different types of nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews, pistachios, etc.) on the characteristics of the metabolic syndrome also through their possible antioxidant effect and vasoactive. In children, some epidemiological studies have associated with a higher consumption of nuts reduced risk of hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity and fasting glucose. The study will be conducted with a randomized design with two arms in parallel with blinded operator. The main objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of 15 grams of nuts and 15 grams of nuts a day in addition to a low calorie diet on the content of erythrocyte membranes of alpha-linolenic acid three months after the beginning of the trial in a group of obese children. Secondary objectives are to evaluate the efficacy of walnuts and hazelnuts in improving the systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure values, lipid profile, glucose and fasting insulin, vascular function.
The primary objective of this trial is to study the feasibility of a resilience intervention to reduce stress and thus improve sleep, healthy diet and physical activity in normal weight pregnant women. Initially, an exploratory study of stressors and worrying in pregnant women will be done by use of qualitative methods (focus group interviews) followed by a randomised controlled feasibility trial with a parallel qualitative process evaluation. This project is expected to improve the understanding of the processes and feasibility of conducting a randomized intervention study to examine if improvements in chronic stress and poor sleep during pregnancy improves early weight gain and childhood risk of obesity.
A randomized control trial to compare the efficacy of two distinct parent treatments on weight loss maintenance for adolescents with obesity participating in a lifestyle intervention including nutrition education, exercise and behavioral support. Funding support from NIH via 1R01HD095910
The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that providers screen children aged 6 years and older for obesity and offer or refer them to a comprehensive behavioral intervention (≥26 hours over a period of up to 12 months) to promote improvement in weight status. Family-based behavioral treatment (FBT) is an effective treatment that targets both child and parents and meets the USPSTF recommendations. By contrast, the American Medical Association (AMA) recommends a staged approach to childhood obesity screening and counseling, which begins with prevention counseling by the primary care provider (PCP) and includes assessment of weight status, patient/family motivation and readiness to change, promotion of healthy eating and activity habits, and use of health behavior change strategies. Our study compares a staged approach enhanced standard of care (eSOC) vs. eSOC + FBT, to provide families and PCPs with information on the best intervention approach for the behavioral treatment of childhood obesity. Our project seeks to fill the gap in the evidence on family-based weight management in primary care settings among diverse and underserved populations with a special focus on Black children, families insured by Medicaid, and sex differences.
The Shenzhen Birth Cohort Study was set up to investigate the effect of early life environmental exposures on short- and long-term health consequences in Shenzhen, China.
Providers are not opportunistic enough in addressing lifestyle habits of teens, and can benefit from appropriate tools to support their conversations with families as well as engage all family members in making changes. Since most teens with obesity do not meet minimum lifestyle recommendations, our team developed Conversation Cards for Adolescents (CCAs), a tool to help teens and providers communicate and set lifestyle goals together. In this study, the investigators will (i) observe if and how CCAs fit in a clinical setting for changing teen-provider interactions and teens's lifestyle habits, (ii) ask teens and providers for their thoughts on CCAs and how they are used, and (iii) determine preliminary impact of CCAs on teen behaviors and clinical factors. The investigators will do this with around 50 teens from a primary/secondary care clinic in Edmonton, Alberta. Teens will be randomized to one of two groups - one group will use CCAs in their appointment with their providers to set a goal for change, while the other will also set a goal for change, but without using CCAs. Results from this study will give us insight into how CCAs are best used in a clinical setting and will help us plan a future full-scale study.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential improvement of sleep quality in children who have residual obstructive sleep apnea, using either an orthodontic intervention or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), versus no treatment.
The objective of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of a computerised decision-support tool, developed to assist paediatric clinicians in delivering personalised nutrition and lifestyle optimization advice to children and their families, as a means of childhood obesity management.
This proposal uses an innovative methodological framework, the multiphase optimization strategy (MOST), to design an effective and efficient responsive feeding (RF) intervention that promotes child appetite self-regulation among a high-risk sample: families with preschoolers living in rural poverty. The principles of MOST emphasize efficiency, allowing identification of the most efficacious intervention components (i.e., components that contribute to treatment effects) while minimizing participant burden and cost. ONE PATH will intervene on ~760 families across 64 classrooms serving largely low-income, rural populations. ONE PATH will capitalize on the existing infrastructure with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education to engage trusted Extension educators making this model cost-effective, and increasing the potential for wide-scale dissemination and sustainability.
