Filter by:This is a feasibility and exploratory study consisting of two parts: first, a cross-sectional (one-time) biomarker measurement comparing BDNF-TrkB (Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its receptor, TrkB,) signaling and cortical plasticity in patients diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease (PD) vs. healthy controls matched by age. Second, a prospective, randomized, double blind trial of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) MAGSTIM Rapid2 Therapy System (TMS) (real or Sham) and aerobic exercise. This exploratory feasibility study will look at BDNF-TrkB signaling and cortical plasticity.
Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by dopaminergic neurons degeneration of the substantia nigra, in the midbrain, resulting in the presence of motor disorders, such as tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. Researches have shown that mental rehearsal in learning motor skills through mental practice (MP), which associates the physical practice to somatosensory imagination to action, causes positive effects in several motor tasks, such as the speed of motion, muscle strength performance and accuracy. Thus, this study aims to report the effects of MP as a tooth brushing training strategy in people with Parkinson's disease. This project was approved by the Ethics Committee in Research with Human beings of UFPE and attempt to compare the presence of bacterial biofilm before and after 8 weeks of brushing through the mental practice training, based on O'Leary's index. The sample consisted of 35 people, divided into two groups: Intervention Group consists of 17 people with Parkinson's, in stages I to III of the disease, who underwent brushing orientation associated with PM, and the control group people without the disease, who received only orientation brushing. Then, the data were evaluated by factorial ANOVA 2x2 and post hoc Tukey test considering p <0.05. It was observed that after the intervention was a significant improvement of the control dental biofilm.
Background: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare neuro-degenerative disease, counted among atypical parkinsonism (AP). Medical treatment and rehabilitation are extremely limited in AP, therefore it would be very useful to find new ways to improve motor and non motor symptoms in PSP. The Brainway Deep Transcranial magnetic stimulation (DTMS) is a new technology of TMS using a particular coil, i.e. H-coil, able to stimulate deeper regions of the brain. Only few studies in literature have evaluated the efficacy of DTMS in Parkinson's Disease and parkinsonism; in particular in PSP patients, a case report showed an improvement in language.
Sleep disorders correspond to a non-motor symptom present in DP, being represented by daytime sleepiness and maintenance insomnia. This study aims to evaluate the effects of acupuncture on sleep disorders in patients with PD assisted by Pró-Parkinson Program at University Hospital of Pernambuco, Brazil. Its a randomized clinical trial approved by the Ethics Committee for Research with Human. It was included patients with diagnosed with Idiopathic Parkinson's disease, Mini Mental State Examination (MMEE) according to education, stages 1, 2 and 3 in the Hoehn-Yahr scale. It was used the sleep Scale for Parkinson's disease (PDSS), a self-administered scale designed to assess nighttime sleep problems, sleep disorders and excessive daytime sleep. Twenty-two subjects were allocated in two groups: experimental and control. Acupuncture was applied on the acupoints F3 - BP6- VB34- IG4 - TA5 - C7 - PC6 - IG11 - VB20 - XIAOCHANXUE once a week, eight sessions in the experimental group. The control group no suffered intervention. The paired analyzes were performed using the Wilcoxon test and the independent analyzes using the Mann-Whitney test.
The purpose of this study is to see if the study drug, suvorexant, is safe and effective in treating symptoms of insomnia in people with Parkinson's Disease. It is anticipated that a total of 20 subjects, 30 to 80 years of age, with Parkinson's Disease and symptoms of insomnia will participate in the study at this site
Introduction Although drug therapy is the mainstay of treatment for Parkinson's disease, the therapy also has its importance by means of exercises which maintains the muscular activity and preserve mobility. One of the techniques that has been used for physical therapy is the mental practice of the mental simulation of movement, aiming at learning or improvement of motor skills through the cortex areas of activation responsible for the movement of preparation before it is executed. In patients with Parkinson's disease motor anticipation this system is compromised, culminating in the march changes and increased risk of falls. Objective: To evaluate the effects of mental practice on physical therapy on the march and the risk of falls in people with Parkinson's disease. Method: The study is defined as a randomized clinical trial with systematic recruitment. Recruitment will be conducted at the Clinic of Neurology, Hospital das clinics Federal University of Pernambuco (Pro-Parkinson Project: Neurology) and the intervention will be held at the same hospital physiotherapy clinic. Both the control group and the trial will be subjected to 15 therapy sessions twice a week, lasting 40 minutes for physical therapy and 15 for mental practice.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the effects of deferiprone, an iron-chelating drug, in patients with Parkinson's disease. Participants will be randomized to receive one of four different dosages of deferiprone or placebo, and will take the assigned study product twice a day for nine months.
This effectiveness-implementation study is a part of the larger study BETA-PD (Balance, Elderly, Training and Activity in Parkinson's Disease), which has the long-term goal to reduce the risk of falling in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) by improving balance, gait and physical activity level. The main hypothesis is that highly challenging balance training will lead to greater gait and balance ability, increased levels of physical activity and an improved health related quality of life. The main aims of the study are to evaluate the effectiveness of the HiBalance program in real-life clinical settings, while exploring facilitators and barriers for program implementation on a wider scale.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the cortisol awakening response with persons with Parkinsons Disease (PD), Huntingtons Disease (HD), and controls. These data are desired so experience can be gained with measuring stress levels subjectively and objectively in persons with PD, HD, and controls.
