Resistance Training in Patients With Parkinson`s Disease.

This is a controlled trial to assess the effects of resistance training on bradykinesia and physical function in patients with Parkinson's Disease. Forty patients diagnosed with Parkinson Disease stage 1 to 3 of the Hoehn and Yahr scale took part in the study and were allocated into 2 groups; Training Group performed a 9-week RT program twice a week while the Control Group attended lectures on the disease.

Physiological Effects of Nutritional Support in Patients With Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder of unknown cause that affects more than a million Americans. It's most prominent pathology is the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the brain. It is believed that oxidative stress and inflammation play an important role in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease as well. The object of this study is to evaluate whether nutritional supplementation with compounds that have been shown to have either anti- inflammatory, or antioxidant effects, might support brain function in patients with Parkinson's disease, particularly in regards to the dopamine system. Enrolled patients will be randomly assigned to receive oral and intravenous n-acetyl cysteine (NAC), or standard PD care. This study will utilize Ioflupane (DaTscan) single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) to measure dopamine function, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to measure inflammatory and oxidative stress markers, and neurological measures to assess clinical symptoms, in patients with PD. Subjects will receive a DaTSCAN and MRS initially and after completing the supplement or NAC regimen.

Relationship Between Symptoms, Retinal Morphology, and the Nigrostriatal Dopamine System in Parkinson's Disease

The purpose of this study is to examine if a correlation exists between findings from brain imaging studies of the status of the dopamine system in the brain using DaTscan and SPECT imaging, clinical symptoms of Parkinson's disease, and changes in the structure of the retina as detected by optical coherence tomography (OCT) in recently diagnosed and more advanced Parkinson's disease patients.

Evaluation of a Multimodal Neuroimaging Method for Diagnosis in Parkinsonian Syndromes

Based on previous promising results, the next step for the validation of a multimodal MRI method in diagnosis and follow up of patients reached by parkinsonian syndromes is (i) to test whether the multimodal neuroimaging is able to discriminate at the individual level, patients with multiple system atrophy parkinsonism (MSA) and patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) (ii) to determine whether the method is sensitive to measure changes over time for the two diseases, according to imaging, neuropsychological and other clinical data. Patients will be compared with healthy controls.

Glutathione is an antioxidant made in the body out of three amino acids, the nutrients that make up protein. This study will determine whether administration of either dose of glutathione, as a nasal spray, improves PD symptoms over time in a population of individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD).
