Filter by:This study aims to understand if a parenting program that helps couples learn to parent as a team and maintain a healthy lifestyle, such as maintaining safer levels of alcohol use, promotes parent and child health and well-being. Programs will be delivered prenatally and postnatally and will include both group classes and individualized sessions. A comprehensive assessment is administered during pregnancy and then at 6 and 12 months of child age. It is hypothesized that targeting intervention during the naturally motivating transition to parenthood may not only provide opportunities for long lasting behavioral change for parents, but also initiate a cascade of protective processes that ultimately reduce risk for negative emotional and behavioral outcomes for children.
Parents have the primary responsibility for child socialization and development, but not all parents have the same possibilities to promote their children's positive development. Immigrant parents living in deprived areas often worry about their children's safety and future, at the same time as they have difficulties facilitating the best development potential for their children. Social services can help parents and their children to attain more promising developmental outcomes through focus on early preventive parenting support efforts, but these efforts need to be culturally tailored for the best possible results. For this reason, social services in the municipality of Örebro developed a culturally sensitive parenting support program aimed at immigrant parents living in deprived areas, who are worried that their children (age 12-18) engage in or will be exposed to harmful environments. The Self-Assured Parenting Program (SAP) offers support to these parents by building on protective factors and strengthening parents in their parenting through focus on parenting competence and parent-child communication. The purpose of SAP is to increase parents' self-confidence and communication between parents and their teenagers as well as to reduce parents' worries through activities that have a clear focus on empowerment and knowledge of child development. This multi-design project aims to test the implementation and effect of TF in Örebro and other Swedish municipalities with similar problems through observation, interviews with parents and groupleaders/managers as well as longitudinal effect measurements of parenting competence, parent-child communication and worries about their children's psychosocial development. This project will allow a partnership between social workers and researchers to be formed in order to generate practice-based evidence about implementation of support to deprived parents, which can be used in the context of everyday social service practice.
The number of women who are incarcerated in the U.S. has increased dramatically over the past 20 years-over 750%, or from 13,258 in 1980 to 111,616 in 2016. Arkansas incarcerates 92 women per 100,000 population compared to 57 per 100,000 average across all states, ranking the state as the 8th highest in the nation. Over 75% of incarcerated women are of childbearing age and about 4% are pregnant upon intake. However, little is known about the population of women who have become incarcerated while pregnant in Arkansas - including the outcomes of these women and their children and how these outcomes may vary in relation to services that are received during incarceration. This research study aims to first expand knowledge on incarcerated women in Arkansas by using administrative data to retrospectively examine the health status and outcomes of pregnant women who were incarcerated in state prison by Arkansas from June 1, 2014 to May 31, 2019 (a five-year cohort; Aim 1). Then, we will lay the groundwork for and subsequently analyze data on outcomes and perspectives of women who have been incarcerated in Arkansas while pregnant (Aims 2 and 3). We will also seek to understand the feasibility and acceptability of elements of an enhanced support program for incarcerated pregnant women recently launched via a collaboration between Arkansas Department of Corrections and UAMS.
The objective of this research is to 1) determine the impact of a physical literacy training workshop for parents of preschool children (3-5 years) on their knowledge and confidence levels in regards to engaging in meaningful physical activity with their child(ren) in order to promote physical literacy. 2) Evaluate workshop reach and implementation facilitators and barriers. In this pilot study, interested participants will be randomized into the intervention group or the wait-list control group. Participants will complete two brief surveys regarding their knowledge and confidence in doing physically activities with their children. The intervention group will receive a 75 minute physical literacy workshop at baseline, and complete a 2 month follow-up interview. The wait-list control group will receive the workshop after questionnaires have been completed. Statistical analysis will be conducted to compare change in knowledge and confidence levels in between intervention and control groups. Findings will contribute to promoting and improving parental confidence in providing opportunities for children to develop their physical literacy and advance future research regarding physical activity promotion for children.
This is a pilot feasibility and acceptability study to inform the development and testing of a novel communication intervention to support parents in their communication with children about cancer. The research questions to be answered by this study are whether the intervention being tested can be feasible and acceptable, and provide preliminary estimates of improvement in parental psychological distress.
The goal of the project is to improve child well-being, permanency, and safety, and reduce the risk for involvement in the child welfare system for families with children pre-birth to five years who are affected by parental substance use disorders (SUD). The project will integrate with SUD treatment programs for pregnant/parenting women and their children and provide an evidence-based therapeutic model, Mothering from the Inside Out (MIO) and Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP). MIO-CPP promotes the development of parental reflective functioning and strengthen parent/child attachment. The project will also examine the role of Certified Recovery Specialists (CRS) to provide case management services to parents during their enrollment in therapy. MIO is an individual, manualized, psychotherapeutic intervention designed to promote parental reflective functioning in mothers who are in treatment for SUDs and/or other mental health problems, and caring for a child in-utero through five years old. CPP is typically offered through weekly sessions with the mother-child dyad that last 1 to 1.5 hours. The MIO-CPP (intervention) model will begin with 6 sessions of MIO for each study participant, with the CPP assessment and engagement phase embedded during this time. This phase will be followed by the dyadic mother-child phase, the core intervention stage of CPP. If a parent needs additional stabilization, more individual time can be added. During the core phase of dyadic CPP the Child Parent Specialists will continue to build and strengthen parents' reflective functioning by embedding aspects from MIO. Beginning in Phase 2, participant dyads will be assigned a Certified Recovery Specialists (CRSs) who will provide services to support them as they transition out of SUD treatment and back into their home communities. We will recruit and hire 2 PA CRSs to join the therapeutic team. CRS services will include but not be limited to: assisting clients with securing housing and employment and connecting to outpatient and other recovery support services (e.g. 12-step programs), and child, medical and behavioral health care as needed. The plan for the timing to introduce CRS services and their issues of focus will be defined through quality improvement methodology during Phase 1. We will use a quasi-experimental trial design with historical controls as well as qualitative interviews to assess effectiveness and efficiency of MIO-CPP when paired with CRS, on parent and child outcomes including therapy engagement, parent/caregiver well-being, child well-being, and family well-being. The study will take place over two phases. Eligible caregivers in Phase 1 will receive MIO-CPP (control), while participants enrolled in Phase 2 will receive a MIO-CPP while also being paired with a CRS. The recruitment for study participants will stop when 130 mother-child dyads have enrolled in the study. Participants will include mother-child dyads from families involved with residential SUD treatment programs serving women and children in Philadelphia and Bucks counties. In Bucks County we will receive referrals from Libertae Inc. in Bensalem, Pennsylvania (PA). In Philadelphia, we will receive referrals from Gaudenzia Hutchinson Place and the Gaudenzia Winner Program. Data collection from participants will occur at four time points during the study: 1) when participants are enrolled; 2) 3 months following enrollment; 3) 6 months following enrollment; and 4) 9 months following enrollment or when the participant ends their participation in weekly therapy sessions if sooner than 9 months following enrollment. Study measures will include: 1) Parent/Caregiver Well-being: a) maternal reflective functioning, b) depression, anxiety, and trauma-related symptoms, c) parental substance use and move toward recovery; d) parenting stress; e) parent-child relationship; 2) Child Well-being: a) behavior problems, b) executive functions; c) socialization skills; 3) Family Well-being: a) child welfare involvement, b) reunifications. As part of this study, investigator will acquire administrative data about the safety and permanency of children and adult recovery for all study participants. The Primary Investigator will request substance use treatment data from the City of Philadelphia Department of Human Services. The requested data elements will include whether the study child has a child welfare record, the types of allegations of abuse or neglect, and when the allegations occurred (from birth to present day). Additionally, investigators will request all available substance use treatment records will be requested for adults who are a part of a study case for the year prior to enrollment in the study to one year following their enrollment in the study.
Preterm (PT) infants spend their first weeks of life in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where receive little affective physical contact, which plays a crucial role in brain development. Evidence indicates that skin-to-skin contact (SSC) has a positive effect on infants' neurophysiological and behavioral adjustment to postnatal life. Moreover, caregiving touch during early interactions is related to sensitive caregiving behavior, which in turn is associated with brain connectivity in full-term (FT) infants. Despite the importance of both SSC and caregiving touch for infant development little is known about the neural correlates of early physical contact in PT infants. Using MRI the project aims to investigate the association between brain responses to gentle skin stroking at 2 months examining the effects of: (1) the birth status (PT vs. FT); (2) the duration of SSC in NICU; (3) the caregiving touch in the home environment and during mother-infant interaction. The investigators hypothesized: (1) differences in the brain responses in the above mentioned ROIs to gentle skin stroking, a type of tactile stimulus associated with affectionate touch and social interaction26, between FT infants and PT infants: (2) that above mentioned putative differences would be mitigate by duration of SSC during the NICU in PT infants; (3) an association between CT/sensitive caregiving behaviors both in the home environment and during face-to-face interaction and brain response in the above mentioned ROIs to gentle skin stroking in PT and FT infants.
The Research Program on Children and Adversity (RPCA) has successfully grown its evidence-based home-visiting program-Sugira Muryango (SM)-in Rwanda, as policies and programs aligned with the Rwandan social protection system have evolved. The current study submission seeks to test an evidence-based implementation strategy, the PLAY Collaborative, to engage local stakeholders and frontline providers and supervisors to ensure quality improvement and sustainability of Sugira Muryango and to repeat our previous intervention to include Ubudehe 1 families with children 0-36 months in Nyanza, Ngoma, and Rubavu Districts in Rwanda.
Objectives The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the SREIA parent training program for families of children with ASD aged three to six years in mainland China. The study will be conducted within the context of routine service provision and assess the effectiveness of SREIA in reducing child behavioral problems as measured by the Externalizing scale of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) for Ages 1.5-5, in comparison to a waitlist control group. Secondary objectives include examining the effectiveness of the SREIA program in reducing ASD symptoms and improving parental and familial outcomes including parental knowledge of ASD and ABA techniques, parenting styles, parental mental health (including stress, anxiety and depression), and family functioning. A process evaluation will be conducted alongside the quasi-experimental trial, the objectives of which are to 1) describe the implementation aspects of the programs with regard to participant involvement, program acceptability, delivery, and sustainability; 2) explore predictors of participant involvement; and 3) examine potential relations between implementation aspects and treatment effects. Background ASD is associated with elevated levels of child emotional and behavior disturbance, which impair child daily functioning and impose challenges to parenting. The SREIA programme is a group-based parent training in China, that has been delivered since 1993 and reached over 10,000 families. However, there is an absence of scientific evaluations of programme effectiveness. This study aims to fill this evidence gap, and the findings will be used to inform future modification, replication, and dissemination of the programme in other parts of China. This study will also contribute to the literature on the effectiveness of parent training programmes for ASD and for families living in low- and middle-income countries. Methods A quasi-experimental design with a mixed-methods approach will be used, involving two consecutive waves of delivery of the SREIA programme. Parent participants will complete demographic and outcome questionnaires at baseline, immediate post-intervention, and 1- or 1.5-year post-intervention (conditional to funding). The implementation components will be assessed by collecting attendance and engagement registry data, facilitators filling out fidelity checklists, research staff observing programme sessions, and parents answering a satisfaction questionnaire. After the programme, some parents, facilitators, and NGO (non-governmental organisation) managers will be invited to take part in qualitative interviews or focus group discussions so as to explore their views about the programme, and to better understand the quantitative data obtained.
This is a study protocol of a randomized controlled trial, which aims to validate the effectiveness of the ODISEA 2.0 Video-feedback intervention compared to a non-intervention group. While this methodology can be used with caregivers of children from 0 to 8 years, in this first study the sample will be caregivers and children from 10 to 47 months. The data collection will be through a pre post evaluation using the parenting skills questionnaire (E2P V2), parental stress index - short form (PSI-SF), and assessment of interaction videos with the Adult Sensitivity Scale (E.S.A) and PICCOLO methodology. Additionally, caregivers will be screened for ACES and with a sociodemographic characterization questionnaire. The primary outcome aims to measure the effectiveness of the intervention within the parenting skills of the caregivers. The secondary outcomes will be to assess parental self-efficacy, parenting stress, parenting practices, parental sensitivity, and implementation fidelity compared to accumulated risk.
