Regulation of mitochondrial health in overweight and obese individuals may be impaired. The purpose of this study is to identify impairments in regulation of mitochondrial health within skeletal muscle and to determine if short-term exercise training (2-weeks) can reverse such impairments. The investigator's hypothesis is that pathways that serve to degrade poorly functioning mitochondria in overweight and obese individuals are down-regulated, but that short-term exercise training can restore these pathways to improve skeletal muscle mitochondrial function.
This study will look at the change in teenagers' body weight from the start to the end of the study. This is to compare the effect on body weight in teenagers taking semaglutide (a new medicine) and teenagers taking "dummy" medicine. The teenagers in the study and their parents will also have talks with study staff about healthy food choices, how to be more physically active and what they can do to help the teenagers lose weight. The teenagers will either get semaglutide or "dummy" medicine - which treatment is decided by chance. The teenagers will take 1 injection every week, on the same day of the week for about 15 months. The study medicine is injected with a thin needle in a skin fold in the stomach, thigh or upper arm. The teenagers will have 17 clinic visits, will have blood samples taken and will have to complete questionnaires and keep a diary. All this will be explained before study start.
This two-year prospective, observational study examines the relationship between habitual short sleep and weight gain, as well as the association between habitual short sleep and behaviors that put people at risk of weight gain. Habitual short sleep is defined as sleeping <6 hours per night on average. Participants will be healthy freshmen college students who are normal weight or overweight. Exclusion criteria include pregnancy, an inability to be ambulatory, currently taking a medication that could influence or interfere with sleep, or reporting a past/current neurological problem, past/current head injury, past/current sleep disorder, current mood, anxiety, or substance use disorder, current psychosis, or current suicidal ideation/plans. Recruitment will be during new student orientations that occur prior to fall semester. Eligibility will be determined using a screening interview, the DSM-5 Self-Rated Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom Measure - Adult, and DSM-5 Self-Rated Level 2 measures. Eligible participants will be assessed at baseline (time 1), and 8, 16, and 24 months after Time 1. Sleep, physical activity, food/beverages, substance use, and technology use will be collected daily during each eight day recording period. Sleep will be measured with a sleep monitor, activity will be assessed using an accelerometer, food/beverages will be obtained using the National Cancer Institute's Automated Self-Administered 24-hour Dietary Assessment Tool, and substance use and technology use will be measured via self-report. Participants will attend a session after each recording period to have weight and height measured, be scanned via Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and complete a packet of questionnaires about demographics, health, sleep quality and beliefs, life events, food cravings, and physical development. It is hypothesized that participants will have different habitual sleep trajectories over time. It is also hypothesized that two particular sleep trajectories (stable habitual short sleep and increasingly shorter habitual sleep across time) will be significantly related to weight gain, increased body fat percent, and weight gain risk behaviors (i.e., increased caloric intake and decreased physical activity). Finally, it is hypothesized that the two sleep trajectories will be significantly associated with higher rates of media and technology use and higher rates of problematic sleep-related beliefs/behaviors.
This study seeks to correlate microbiome sequencing data with information provided by patients and their medical records regarding obesity.
The study evaluates the effect of exercise and/or diet during on body weight, body composition and health related blood parameters. Participants are overweight sedentary females, allocated to four different groups: Normal diet, Low-carb-high-fat diet, Normal diet + exercise, Low-carb-high-fat diet + exercise.
The primary objectives are to characterize changes in indices of systemic and gut inflammation, assess host- and microbial-derived metabolite pools, and describe and link functional metagenomics and metatranscriptomic alterations in the gut microbiome with metabolite and inflammatory outcomes after acute (24hr) and chronic (4 week) intake of anthocyanins and ellagitannins from strawberry and red raspberries compared to a control diet (negative control), FOS (positive control, non-polyphenol, carbohydrate-based fermentable fiber/pre-biotic), or combination diet (berry composite + FOS) in human participants with low-grade inflammation.
In Korea, 5 million adults aged 30 years or older have diabetes. The development and expansion of Korea's economy and society, has led to dramatic chances in people's lifestyle and diet habits, and an increase in life expectancy. However, changes in lifestyle and diet habits related to the improvements of socioeconomic status may contribute to an increased diabetes burden in Korea. Therefore, it is important to prevent diabetes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of real time-continuous glucose measurement (RT-CGM) system compared to only lifestyle modification group on blood glucose, lipid profile and diabetes prevention in prediabetic adults with overweight or obesity.
The purpose of this research is to study how the price of foods affects food buying choices at the grocery store. The researchers are interested in this topic because the price of foods can have a big impact on what people choose to buy and prices change over time. The researchers are doing this study to see how changes in food prices affect what foods mothers choose for their families.
The Nordic Diet is a dietary pattern rich in traditional Nordic foods, including berries, grains, and fatty fish common in northern Europe. Studies have shown a protective effect of the Nordic Diet on cardiometabolic risk factors, however only select clinical practice guidelines for the management of diabetes (i.e. Diabetes Canada) recommend this dietary pattern. To support the update of the EASD clinical practice guidelines for nutrition therapy, the investigators propose to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies and clinical trials to investigate the association between the Nordic Diet, cardiometabolic outcomes and cardiovascular disease incidence and mortality. The findings generated by this proposed knowledge synthesis will help improve the health of consumers through informing evidence-based guidelines and improving health outcomes by educating healthcare providers and patients, stimulating industry innovation, and guiding future research design.
