Filter by:The study will examine how medical cannabis use affects opioid analgesic use. This landmark study will be among the first to examine the effect of medical cannabis with different THC/CBD (Tetrahydrocannibinol/Cannabidiol) content on opioid use as well as adverse events.
This study will examine the effects of doses of alcohol/placebo and doses of opioid/placebo, alone and in combination. The primary outcomes are related to pharmacodynamic measures (subjective ratings of drug liking and other abuse-related effects; physiological outcomes) to determine the interaction effects of these compounds.
Non-inferiority randomized trial of 5,500 women with a cesarean delivery randomized prior to discharge to either an individualized opioid prescription protocol (IOPP) that includes shared decision making or to a fixed opioid prescription of 20 tablets of oxycodone 5mg.
Opioid-Induced Constipation (OIC) is often associated with a compromised quality of life of patients in palliative care (PC) setting. Among the Peripherally-Acting Mu-Opioid Receptor Antagonists, Naloxegol is the most effective to treat OIC and to improve OIC-related aspects of quality of life in patients with non-cancer pain. This observational study aims to assess the impact of a 4-weeks Naloxegol therapy on the quality of life in advanced cancer patients with OIC assisted by a home PC program. The study is enrolling cancer patients with OIC (defined according to Rome IV criteria) not relieved by first-line laxatives, starting the therapy with 25 mg/day of Naloxegol. The main parameters evaluated at the beginning of the therapy (T0) and after 28 days (T28) are: Patient Assessment of Constipation Quality-of-Life (PAC-QoL, 4 subscales: physical discomfort, psychosocial discomfort, worries and concerns, satisfaction), evaluation of objective (number of weekly evacuations) and subjective constipation (Bowel Function Index, BFI, normal score<30), pain assessment by NRS.
The specific objective of this proposal is to evaluate pain and opioid use following a midurethral sling (MUS) under two different opioid prescribing schemes. The central hypothesis is that, in spite of the fact that opioids are often routinely prescribed by many surgeons following this procedure, most patients do not require them for pain control, and patients who are not prescribed postoperative will have similar pain scores and pain control satisfaction compared with patients who are routinely prescribed a standard amount of opioids for postoperative pain control.
The investigators will enroll 100 participants using a randomized control trial design to implement and evaluate an individualized opioid taper program supporting rural Primary Care Physicians (PCPs) caring for patients with moderate to severe trauma discharged on opioids. This study will link a trauma center Physician Assistant (PA) with rural PCPs to facilitate pain care and the individualized opioid taper. The investigators seek to improve patient's pain and opioid outcomes and support the PCPs who assume care for these complex patients after hospital discharge. Our long term goal is to provide a service that will help trauma patients as they go back into primary care and into pain- and opioid-free living.
In this study the investigators plan to examine the perioperative use of sufentanil sublingual (SL) in the analgesic regimen for spine surgery, one of the most common surgeries performed in the US. Patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery often experience severe pain during the first three postoperative days. Currently, no data are available for this patient population which routinely experiences moderate to severe acute pain. The investigators will analyze whether sufentanil SL is associated with lower opioid consumption in the post anesthesia care unit and pain scores.
Opioid free anesthesia is an anesthetic technique, in which administration of multimodal analgesia and sympathicolytics provides hemodynamic stability without use of opioids. Such management may be beneficial to the obese patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. Our study aims to compare opioid free anesthesia in such patients with standard, short-acting opioid based.
The primary aim of this study is to evaluate whether celecoxib (CELEBREX) is equivalent to acetaminophen-codeine-caffeine (TYLENOL# 3) for the management of pain after primary elective open septorhinoplasty with osteotomies. Secondary objectives include comparison of adverse medication effects and complications (e.g., bleeding events and bruising) that occur postoperatively. Half of the study participants will receive celecoxib, and half will receive acetaminophen-codeine-caffeine. We hypothesize that both interventions will exhibit no difference in pain control or postoperative bleeding, but that participants taking CELEBREX will experience less medication-related side effects and less bruising postoperatively.
This is a single-center, randomized, prospective study evaluating the effect of serratus anterior plane block performed after induction of anesthesia, but before the start of surgery on postoperative opioid requirements. The hypothesis of the study is that serratus anterior plane blocks are relatively simple to perform, provide good postoperative analgesia, facilitate early tracheal extubation, and reduce the length of hospital stay after pediatric cardiac surgery through a thoracotomy.
