Filter by:To study the effects of compression stockings on sleep apnea in hemodialysis patients with diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea. The rationale of this study consists in the fluid shift theory, which consists in the nocturnal rostral fluid shift from legs, which causes upper airways edema. The aim of this study is to evaluate if compression stockings could improve such nocturnal volume redistribution and, therefore, improve obstructive sleep apnea.
The purpose of the trial is to investigate the effects of three months' treatment with a CPAP-device versus control group on change in arterial stiffness in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with newly detected Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA).
The purpose of this study is to determine the safety and feasibility of the Magnap magnetic device in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Reducing sleep health disparities was recognized as a priority area for intervention by the National Institutes of Health. Sleep apnea, which disproportionately affects minorities, is an important preventable and treatable disease that should be targeted as it is associated with increased cardiovascular risk and disease outcomes, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, cardiac arrhythmia, and chronic heart failure. Evidence from previous research suggests that most minorities are unaware of general sleep problems, such as sleep apnea symptoms and the negative effects on cardiovascular disease. Only 26% of minorities participating in the investigators prior research followed up on recommended sleep apnea screening, although 39% were at high risk for sleep apnea. While few followed the physician's recommendations, 90% of those assessed received a sleep apnea diagnosis. The investigators research will assess the effectiveness of peer-based sleep health education and social support in increasing sleep apnea screening and treatment rates among minorities with sleep apnea risk. Participants will receive quality-controlled and culturally tailored peer education using a sleep health education manual. They will each receive up to 4 sessions promoting sleep apnea screening during a 6-month period. Those with a diagnosis will receive 2 additional sessions promoting sleep apnea treatment adherence, in conjunction with telephone interventions. The investigators research will also assess the rate of sleep apnea among minorities using home recordings. The long-term goal of the investigators study is to apply this intervention in community-based settings (barbershops, beauty salons, churches, and health centers), thereby linking community health promotion to the healthcare system.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent breathing problem that occurs during sleep. OSA have been associated with the obesity epidemic in developing countries; additionally, high OSA prevalence rates are present in populations with cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Two OSA treatments are currently available, oral appliance (OA) therapy and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). OAs are an underutilized non-surgical treatment and few studies have analyzed their long-term effectiveness for patients with OSA. The purpose of this study is to assess the long-term effectiveness of OA therapy in patients with OSA and to explore any changes on cardiovascular related morbidity and mortality related to this therapy.
Resistant hypertension is defined as uncontrolled blood pressure (BP ≥ 140/90mmHg) despite the current use of three or more antihypertensive drugs at full doses, including a diuretic. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is at high risk for cardiovascular morbidity and is highly prevalent in patients with resistant hypertension. The prospective observational POP-ART study will assess the efficacy of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment on BP in patients with resistant hypertension and collect data from usual care.
Sleep apnea involves significant increases in disease and death, but its consequences in people over 65 years of age are incompletely recognized. Intraoral mandibular advancement appliances reduce the number of apneas and hypopneas. The investigators hypothesized that oral appliances provided to the elderly may prevent hypertension and other consequences of sleep apnea in large populations, at a favorable cost/benefit relationship for the public health system.
The main objective of the study is to identify the determinant of sleep characteristics of obese patients attempting a tertiary clinical center for obesity management, including bariatric surgery. More accurately the questions addressed are: - What are the determinants of the sleep habits (sleep duration, chronotype) and of their evolution - What are the determinants of sleep breathing disorders (sleep apnea, obesity hypoventilation syndrome) and of their evolution
In children with OSA (Obstructive sleep apnea) adenotonsillectomy is regarded as the first choice of treatment. Studies in recent years have shown that the procedure does not always have the expected effect. Children with OSA are at greater risk for complications from the procedure. There is disagreement regarding the need for sleep studies in children prior to surgery in order to verify an OSA diagnosis. Today less than 10% of these children have polysomnography (PSG). The main purpose of this study is to describe the prevalence of OSA among children referred for adenotonsillectomy. The investigators will also examine these children prior to and six months after surgery to assess their sleep pattern and quality of life. The project outcome aims to improve the precision and quality of diagnosis and the short and long term effects of treatment of children with OSA.
This is part 2 of the #NCT01618240 under the same IRB protocol #2010P001919. The primary objective of this study is to examine factors that are related to sleep-disordered breathing and upper airway patency in critically ill patients who have been recently mechanically ventilated. Our primary hypothesize is that sedatives and neuromuscular blocking agents given in the ICU prior to extubation and during the first night following extubation are associated with sleep-disordered breathing. The secondary hypotheses are that duration of mechanical ventilation, BMI, and muscle strength are associated with sleep-disordered breathing during the night after extubation. The secondary objective is to evaluate if sleep-disordered breathing in the ICU can be predicted by standard pulmonary function testing in the ICU.
