The Influence of 5-HTTLPR and BDNF Polymorphisms on Anxiety and Mood After Acute Exercise

The Influence of 5-HTTLPR and BDNF Polymorphisms on Anxiety and Mood After Acute Exercise. Introduction: The 5-HTTLPR (SLC6A4) and BDNF (Val66Met) polymorphism presents an action on the modulation of human behavior and has received great attention as a risk factor for several psychiatric disorders. In recent years, a growing number of studies have evaluated the association between these polymorphisms and personality traits related to anxiety and depression. Objectives: To determine the frequencies of 5-HTTLPR and BDNF polymorphisms in a college students population; To determine the influence of 5-HTTLPR and BDNF polymorphisms on mood states and anxiety after acute physical exercise. Material and Methods: Four hundred (400) College students will be assessed. In the first phase of the study, the following procedures will be performed: Screening, Aerobic Fitness Assessment (Step Test), Questionnaires (PAR-Q, Habitual Physical Activity Level, Beck Anxiety and Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety, and Perceived Stress Scale), blood sample collection and genotyping. In the second phase of the study, two (2) groups with or without polymorphisms will be selected (for each gene). These groups will be submitted to four conditions (three experimental conditions and one control condition), carried out randomly and separated by an interval of 1 week. In the experimental Conditions the volunteers will perform treadmill exercises sessions (30 minutes) in three different intensities (light, moderate and vigorous) and will respond to the Borg Scale at 10, 20 e 30 minutes. In the control condition the volunteers will be instructed to remain seated (quiet rest), relaxed and silent for 30 minutes. In both conditions, the volunteers will complete the Profile of Mood States (POMS) and State-Anxiety (STAY), 05 (five) minutes before and, 5 (five) and 20 (twenty) minutes following the interventions.

Investigation of the Acute and Chronic Cognitive and Mood Effects of CP9700 in Humans

This acute-on-chronic study will examine the effectiveness of CP9700 for improving cognitive performance and mood in healthy young adults. CP9700 is a mix of highly purified grape seed-derived polyphenolic extracts from Vitis vinifera produced by Polyphenolics Inc. (Madera, CA, USA). The polyphenolic component of the product is comprised entirely of catechin and epicatechin, derivatives of catechin and epicatechin (e.g.,epicatechin gallate), and proanthocyanidins. We will perform a randomised, double-blind, parallel-groups human intervention trial using CP9700 and a well characterised sugar-matched placebo to investigate changes in cognitive performance.

Cannabis Observational Study on Mood, Inflammation, and Cognition

This project examines the effects of cannabis on cognition and other domains of function and whether those effects are dependent upon the ratio of THC to CBD in the product. Current cannabis users are asked to stop using their typical product and to use cannabis containing different ratios of the cannabinoids THC and CBD. Participants complete baseline assessments including cognitive tasks, clinical measures, substance use history, and blood draw. Participants then acquire and use their study strain on their own, and after a period of use the mobile pharmacology laboratory goes to a location of their choosing. They complete cognitive, motor and blood-based assessments, then leave the mobile lab to use their study product one last time, returning to the mobile lab to complete cognitive, motor, and blood-based assessments immediately after use and one hour after use. A small subset of participants complete all of these procedures but use edible as opposed to flower-based products.

Diet has a considerable influence on microbiota composition and the intake of either prebiotics (microbiota-specific food or probiotics (live microbiota species) has been shown to induce positive effects in both anxiety and depression. At present there are few studies exploring stress-related conditions such as emotional/comfort eating behaviours, particularly in individuals who have experienced early life stress and/or find stress difficult to deal with in regards to gut microbiome composition and subsequent behavioural outcomes. Early life stress has been linked to the development of bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa in adolescence and adulthood and since the gut microbiota has been proposed as having a causal role in the aetiology and/or maintenance of disordered eating, an empirical question is whether the microbiota may mediate the relation between stress and disordered eating. This is an investigation into the effects of chronic daily consumption of a prebiotic on stress-related eating and mood.

Ultra-Brief Intervention to Reduce Depressive and Anxious Symptoms

Symptoms of depression and anxiety are extremely prevalent in the population. Unfortunately, patients often face barriers to accessing mental health care, particularly psychotherapeutic interventions, including long wait-times and demanding therapeutic protocols. For instance, Mindfulness-Based Therapy (MBT) has demonstrated effectiveness at decreasing symptoms of depression and anxiety, and improving wellbeing; however, 'traditional' MBT can demand over 30 hours of clinical time, and 50-60 hours of homework, all of which can be barriers to care. A pilot, uncontrolled study conducted at Sunnybrook illustrated the potential feasibility / efficaciousness of a novel abbreviated MBT in improving hospital staff wellbeing. The goal of this controlled study is to further test feasibility and acceptability of this intervention to reduce depressive / anxious symptoms, reduce stress and improve wellbeing in outpatient mood/anxiety patients. If efficacious, this Abbreviated MBT could reduce barriers to accessing mental health care.
